Responsibilities: Combe Martin’s Sea Lion Department are offering an exiting and engaging internship for those individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in the marine mammal training field.

This internship experience will provide the opportunity to work very closely with Californian Sea Lions and African Penguins, side by side with a professional, experienced trainer. Gaining first hand experience by assisting with daily Sea Lion husbandry, training sessions, pool maintenance and other related duties.

Where appropriate, interns may take part in Marine Conservation Society fund-raisers, sea lion interactions, presentations and assisting with public swim sessions.

Requirements: Successful candidates should posses a positive attitude, good communication, observation and organisational skills and the ability to accept direction, work well with others as part of a team and have an interest and general knowledge in marine life and conservation.
Candidates must commit to at least 24 hours per week over 6-12 months, including weekends and bank holidays. Occasional overtime may be required.

The position may also lead to a full time position for successful candidates.

This is a new post that has arisen from the ongoing development and restructuring of the centre. This role will cover all areas of the tropical house, propagation house, outdoor gardens and nature trail. Extensive experience working in amenity horticulture and with tropical species is essential. This will often include working in animal enclosures and in hot and humid conditions. We are looking for someone with expert knowledge who can also undertake routine jobs and maintenance. The Breeding Centre for Endangered Arabian Wildlife (BCEAW) is part of Sharjah Desert Park, a conservation and education facility managed by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) of Sharjah Government in the United Arab Emirates. The Centre focuses on captive breeding and research of the endemic fauna of the Arabian Peninsula.

We are currently recruiting for a suitably experienced and qualified Section Head, in the Rodent and Small Mammal Department to join our Team. The Department’s animals include wild rodents, hyrax, bats, hedgehogs and small carnivores from the Arabian Peninsula.

This position will report to the Operations Manager and will be responsible for the overall organisation and management of our rodent and small mammal collections, including supervision of three fulltime keepers.

The role will involve the implementation and progression of the animal collection plan; exhibit design and development; the efficient management of resources; staff leadership and development and assisting in the expansion of the Centre’s conservation and research activities in the United Arab Emirates and abroad with an emphasis on teamwork and a ‘hands-on’ operational approach.

The successful candidate should be qualified in an appropriate animal/conservation discipline, have a proven track record in rodent husbandry and breeding, and have a minimum of five years experience. Experience with insectivore and small carnivore husbandry and breeding will be an advantage.

Chester Zoo - Animal Husbandry Internships

11 MONTH WORK PLACEMENT/ INTERNSHIP (ANIMAL HUSBANDRY)

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation breeding programmes, research and education.

We are looking for highly committed, motivated individuals to join our animal husbandry departments on an 11 month work experience / internship placement within this unique scientific/conservation environment.

These placements are demanding but highly rewarding voluntary positions and many of our past interns go on to careers in zoos.

The Internships:

 Maximum eleven month’s duration, commencing in September 2009 and finishing August 2010.

 Interns will be assigned to one of our animal keeping sections specialising in birds or mammals or reptiles, amphibian and invertebrates or fish and aquatic invertebrates.

 In addition to animal husbandry duties, interns will be required to assist with the production and distribution of animal feeds (including management of invertebrate colonies, forage production, browse provision etc). There may also be opportunities to assist zoo staff with collection of behavioural and clinical data and involvement in environmental enrichment programmes.

 There may be the opportunity to gather data for your own course-specific projects (agreed on an individual basis with our Research Officer).

 Interns will receive on the job training in the husbandry of the species with which they work including basics of nutrition, zoo management, breeding programmes, in-situ conservation programmes, record keeping, enrichment etc.

 This is a full time and physically demanding position. Hours of work are from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. daily, working ten days in fourteen, including alternate weekends, bank holidays etc as rostered. As we are a registered Charity, funded entirely by visitor fees and donations, we regret we are unable to offer any wages or salary for the placement. We will provide luncheon vouchers for the days that you attend work. No other benefits are offered.

What we are looking for in our interns:

 You must currently be studying for or have completed an animal science related course, at HND or Degree level or level 4 NVQ.

 You must have a genuine interest in all aspects of animal husbandry and be empathetic to the mission of the Zoo.

 You must be able to work as an individual and as part of a team, with a reliable and conscientious attitude and good communication skills.

 Have the ability to financially support yourself for the entire length of the internship.

Parks, Conservation and Lands (PCL), within Territory and Municipal Services is a
Branch of the Environment and Recreation Network responsible for planning and
management of parks and reserves and the public domain, including, lakes, street trees, public open space and city places. It protects and conserves the natural resources of the ACT, promotes appropriate recreational, educational and scientific uses of our parks and reserves, and maintains the look of the city and its environs.

Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve has recently opened a major nature based tourism site the
“Sanctuary @ Tidbinbilla” which has a focus on displaying and interpreting Australian
native wildlife in natural settings. This new position will assist in all aspects of the Wildlife Department, including Threatened Species captive breeding programs.

We are seeking an experienced Wildlife Keeper who is able to perform the duties of the Senior Wildlife Officer for defined periods of time. Assist in the care and security of captive Australian native wildlife, and report on husbandry/animal health problems to the Senior Wildlife Officer. Assist in the capture, handling, identification and transport of animals and perform treatments as directed by the Veterinarian. Maintain accurate routine daily animal records and assist in identified research and breeding projects.
Assist in conducting public presentations and public relations activities, and providing general guidance to volunteers and work experience students. Maintain facilities and equipment associated with the management of captive wildlife, including the appropriate storage and supply of food items and other materials.

Ideally the successful candidate will possess extensive animal experience; including
experience in waterfowl, macropod and Koala husbandry, supervising staff and working
with Threatened Species Recovery Programs.

You will also possess highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, good
teamwork principles and a willingness to participate in other Reserve activities such as bushfire control.

Reports To: Life Support Systems Manager

Position Summary

The Water Laboratory Manager is responsible for ensuring the quality of the
water chemistry of a closed system of marine and freshwater exhibit tanks
within the Living Collections department, including a 188,000 gallon kelp
forest exhibit. Working under the Life Support Systems Manager and closely
with the Director of Aquatics, the Water Laboratory Manager will create and
implement policies and procedures for maintaining the quality of the exhibit
and holding systems water. The Water Laboratory Manager will collect,
analyze, interpret and record water samples while making appropriate changes
to procedures as necessary.


*Qualifications *

- BS/BA in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field.

- 5+ years in similar position at an AZA-accredited aquarium or
comparable institution preferred.

- Advanced knowledge of water chemistry with a strong emphasis on closed
marine and freshwater systems.

- Detailed knowledge of the methods and procedures necessary for the
proper sampling and analysis of water.

- Previous experience operating/managing a water chemistry/quality
laboratory preferred.

- Excellent laboratory skills including ability to write procedure
manuals.

- Strong technical writing skills and effective oral communication are
essential.

- Computer literacy in essential programs to analyze, interpret, record
and report results to appropriate facility personnel.

- Proven ability to supervise and manage a diverse and technical staff
preferred.

- Knowledge of OSHA and Cal OSHA standards in an aquarium and laboratory
environment preferred.

- Experience creating and managing budgets preferred.

- Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Major Job Responsibilities

- Develop and implement full water quality testing, analysis, recording
and reporting procedures for closed marine and freshwater aquatic systems.

- Closely monitor water quality within the facility using proven
laboratory techniques.

- Perform microbiological examination of exhibit and holding tank water
including testing for coliform and total bacteria.

- Implement and monitor safety standards and procedures for the Water
Quality Laboratory.

- Manage and direct a diverse staff of employees and volunteers.

- Contribute to the mission of the California Science Center Foundation

The Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for the position of Displays Supervisor at the Scottish SEA LIFE & Marine Sanctuary, Oban.

This is a very challenging role as there is not only the husbandry of the native marine species, but also specialising in the care of resident seals and the rehabilitation & care of both common and grey seal pups.

The Person
The successful applicant will have proven supervisory skills, excellent fish husbandry knowledge, with the confidence to not only pursue, but also maximise PR opportunities, including TV coverage. You will also be involved in dealing with the public and handling media enquiries, in order to promote the business effectively.
A relevant Degree, or equivalent, is preferable, along with experience in a similar role. The ability to be creative, to bring new ideas to the development of displays, as well as project management skills and a lucid approach to problem solving, are all vital elements of this position. Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe
with an international reputation for achieving its mission in
conservation breeding programmes, research and education. We
currently have a vacancy for a temporary Bird Keeper on a six
month contract, to join a large and busy section.

The post will be largely dealing with waterfowl, Cranes,
Galliformes, softbills, and other species. The position will also be
required to assist with cover keeping on other sections within the
bird teams and working with a wide range of bird species.
Candidates must have experience of working with captive birds, in
a zoological or conservation setting, and particular experience of
hand rearing and working with large Gruiformes. Candidates will
be expected to be qualified to HND/BSc level in a zoological
related science and be computer literate.

Life Support Systems Technician for the California Science Center Foundation

The Life Support Systems Technician is responsible for all daily operations
and maintenance of life support components and systems. Life Support Systems
equipment supports all Living Collections areas, including a 188,000 gallon
Kelp Forest tank and several smaller marine and freshwater exhibits.

*Major Job Responsibilities: *

- Responsible for performing inspections of all life support equipment
for preventative maintenance, routine upkeep and repair of all faulty life
support system components.
- Contributes to the design of life support systems for temporary tanks
or future additions as needed.
- Assists with water chemistry reports and make recommendations for
change as necessary.
- Maintains Life Support Systems logs and records.
- Recognizes and follows all safety policies and procedures.

- BA/BS degree in Biology, System Engineer or related field
- 3 years experience in similar role at an AZA-accredited institution

- Experience with centrifugal pump equipment fractional to 60HP, sand
filters, foam fractionators, UV
sterilizers, ozone systems, and heat exchangers is desirable.
- Experience operating computer programming for automated controls
(Allen/Bradley controls strongly preferred).
- Ability to work in an industrial work environment, with low headroom
and difficult access.
- Ability to work well independently and in a team environment, good
communicator with strong technical writing skills.
- Knowledge of OSHA and Cal OSHA standards in an aquarium environment

The Nutritionist is responsible for ensuring the dietary health of all
Living Collections animals as well as maintaining cleanliness and stock of
the various components, including food, in the food preparation kitchen. The
Nutritionist creates and implements food preparation guidelines and
procedures, provides necessary supplements, and designs nutritional
parameters to ensure proper dietary regimes for the Living Collections
organisms.

*Major Job Responsibilities: *

- Prepares all diets for Living Collections aquatic and terrestrial
animals ensuring high quality food with proper nutritional content.
- Assists the Veterinarian and other Living Collections staff with animal
care
- Maintains inventory and develops purchasing lists of kitchen items and
additional food as needed.
- Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of all food preparation surfaces
and equipment.
- Ensures high quality control on food stock, including maintaining
complete and accurate food storage temperature logs.
- Records/compiles all necessary health information and communicates to
Veterinary in a timely fashion.
- Participates in the daily feeding routines of the Living Collections
animals.
- Assists Living Collections staff in the daily care of the animals.
- Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies including USDA, FDA,

- 4+ years experience working in animal care, preferably at an
AZA-accredited facility.

Location: Lillooet Region, British Columbia

Organization description: The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) works to improve the welfare of wild and domestic animals throughout the world by reducing commercial exploitation of animals, protecting wildlife habitats and assisting animals in distress. IFAW seeks to motivate the public to prevent cruelty to animals and to promote animal welfare and conservation policies that advance the well being of both animals and people.

Volunteer position description: IFAW is seeking a dynamic individual to volunteer with its grizzly bear rehabilitation project in British Columbia. The volunteer will assist with monitoring of the bears once they have been released back to the Lillooet region of BC. Volunteer positions are available for 6 months, from May 13 through to October 31, 2009.

Duties

This position works closley with a partner volunteer to accomplish the following;

Collect and analyze data on dispersal and ranging patterns
Map their movements
Conduct grizzly bear use site investigations
Vegetation surveys
Remote uploading of GPS collar data from ground and air
Creation of weekly field reports
Creation of final report on post-release monitoring
Work with each of three partner organizations
Exchange and distribute information with the project team


Requirements

Essential - Bachelors degree in biological, ecological, wildlife, veterinary science or animal behavior. Desirable - Graduate degree in biological, ecological, wildlife, veterinary science or animal behavior. Those pursuing a graduate degree in any of the above would be considered and opportunities to develop the project towards a masters' thesis/ dissertation would be encouraged
Previous experience field monitoring radio collared animals preferably using both VHF and GPS technology
Demonstrated communication and research skills, both written and verbal
Highly motivated, detail-oriented self-starter
Strong ability to work as part of a team
Ability to work long hours in inclement weather
Ability to hike long distances through difficult and rough terrain carrying heavy gear
Previous experience in grizzly bear country recommended
Flexible, reliable, and able to maintain a positive attitude under stress
Commitment to Animal Welfare

Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust (WWCT) is the parent body for three zoos (Paignton Zoo Environmental Park, Newquay Zoo and Living Coasts, Torquay) and three nature reserves (Primley Park and Clennon Gorge both adjacent to Paignton Zoo and Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve, South Devon). The Field Conservation and Research Department of the WWCT conducts research across all sites in the WWCT family and has an excellent reputation for high quality research and good publication rates. The Department has well qualified staff with expertise and extensive experience of research supervision in a range of fields such as animal behaviour, welfare, nutrition, plant and animal ecology, genetics and visitor studies.

The Department's research is focused in three main areas:

• Behavioural Husbandry and Welfare. Includes research into the effects of the zoo environment on behaviour, methods to measure welfare, animal training, nutrition

• Behavioural Ecology and Cognition. Includes infant development, social interactions, dominance hierarchies, cognitive abilities, discrimination methods

• Conservation, Ecology and Environment. Includes monitoring the effects of reserve management eg grassland restoration, conservation grazing, autecology of individual species
