Peripatetic Lecturers in Animal Science



Peripatetic Lecturers in Animal Science (2 x roles, 1 maternity cover)
£18,303 to £32,837 (if qualified) plus £1,848.50 LW

Our client is looking to recruit both a permanent and temporary (maternity cover) lecturer to contribute to the teaching programme of the College, for a range of subjects related to Animal Science and GCE science subjects to appropriate examination body standards, including both centre- and work-based learning.

Both of these roles are peripatetic between centres (Enfield, Crystal Palace and Gunnersbury Park)

About the College

Capel Manor College in Greater London, is a vocational college delivering Arboriculture and Countryside, Animal Care and Saddlery, Floristry and Balloon Artistry, Garden Design and Horticulture.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Delivering and co-ordinating the assessment of a range of subjects related to Animal Science and GCE science subjects to appropriate examination body standards, including both centre- and work-based learning.  Competence in the care and management of a wide range of animal species would be an advantage. 
  • Acting as a Course Manager including minuting of meetings, carrying out tutorials with students, recording results and providing management information.
  • Providing specialist advice relating to animal care activities and developments.
  • Contributing to management of delegated budgets in accordance with College polices and procedures.
  • Supporting curriculum planning, development and support within the School.
  • Researching and the production of course materials.
  • Taking shared responsibility for health and welfare of the Colleges animal stock, including contribution to weekend, holiday and emergency cover rotas as required.
  • Liaising with animal care workers, other technicians and internal staff with regard to the provision of practical student activities.
  • Liaising with external bodies, visiting speakers and representatives of legal welfare organisations.
  • Ensuring that all requirements and regulations relating to health and safety are adhered to at all times.  Responsible for ensuring that the health and safety of students is maintained whilst undertaking practical sessions.
  • Providing specialist input into the development of new courses, modules, services or activities within the college.
  • Any other duties of a similar nature as required by the Head of Animal Care & Saddlery.

Experience/special knowledge/job requirements:

  • HND, degree or similar in a science or animal related discipline.
  • Teaching qualification (support will be given to gain accreditation.)
  • A commitment to and enthusiasm for the teaching and guidance of students at all levels.
  • Effective communication/organisation skills and ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
  • Sound administrative skills.
  • Familiarity with Information Learning Technology applications.
  • To be able to instruct and assess practical skills.
  • An understanding of and commitment to Diversity & Equality as it applies to a supportive service and in the workplace.
  • An understanding of safeguarding and a commitment to creating a safe learning environment
  • Commitment to inclusive and comprehensive educational provision.

Hours: Full Time

Start date: January 2014

Resident Veterinary Surgeon



Exciting opportunity for a Resident Veterinary Surgeon

We are seeking a Resident Veterinary Surgeon to join our bear & vet team at our Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre (VBRC) in Tam Dao, Vietnam. The Veterinary Surgeon will be responsible for the provision of extensive veterinary care to bears rescued from the bear bile industry and to local domestic animals.
The Veterinary Surgeon will report to the centre’s Bear and Vet Team Director, but will work closely with our Veterinary Nurses and Bear Management team. He/She may be required to travel within Asia and participate in welfare outreach projects and work with local veterinarians.

Requirements
§         3-5 years work experience in a large mixed veterinary practice, zoological facility, specialist referral centre, or similar working environment.
§         Excellent clinical and organizational skills, attention to detail, an aptitude for problem-solving medicine and self-directed learning and plenty of initiative and flexibility.
§         A good sense of humor, excellent communication skills and the ability to live and work closely with the rest of the team comprising both western and local staff.
§         Cultural sensitivity and a history of working abroad, plus a background in captive wildlife management or charitable veterinary work are beneficial.
§         Suitable candidates must be able to commit for a minimum of 2 years.

Appointment is paid, full-time, five (5) days a week with some weekend work applicable.

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation breeding programmes, research and education.

We are currently recruiting for an Assistant Team Manager on the Giraffe section. The post will involve assisting the Team Manager in the daily management of the Giraffe section along with mentoring, training and developing the team under the direction of the Team Manager. The successful candidate will provide extensive knowledge and expertise in animal husbandry and management with a focus on giraffe or okapi, and be able to develop and implement new ideas for improving husbandry, building strong working relationships with other departments to ensure standards are met. Experience of working in a zoo or safari park and of Operant Conditioning are essential. Candidates will have a higher education qualification in a Zoological related science (min HND) or equivalent experience. 

The successful candidate will have leadership qualities, experience of supervising a team and be able to organise and prioritise tasks in a dynamic environment. A good understanding of risk assessments is required to ensure all staff are fully aware of safety and management procedures. This role will involve representing Chester Zoo and the Giraffe team for media interviews and internal and external meetings, workshops and conferences in the UK and overseas. Therefore, excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Applicants should have a full driving licence and be prepared to work weekends and Bank Holidays in a roster system.

Salary is £23,254.96 per annum for a 40 hour week.

Qualified Veterinary Nurse – Moon Bear Rescue Centre in China

Do you enjoy a challenge, and are you dedicated to animal welfare?  Due to changes in visa regulations we are looking for a qualified veterinary nurse to join our China Moon Bear Rescue Centre in Chengdu.
                       
This is an outstanding opportunity for motivated individuals pursuing a career in wildlife care and welfare.  The Veterinary Nurse will work as part of a highly skilled veterinary team to ensure the care of predominantly Asiatic black bears (moon bears) and domestic animals at our rescue centre. Appointment is full-time, five days a week plus scheduled weekend work. Out of hours work may be required.

Candidates should be highly motivated with plenty of initiative and should be comfortable with both clinical and non-clinical work.  There is a high degree of autonomy in this position, and while you will work closely with other team members you will have distinct areas of responsibility; whilst reporting to the Senior Vet Nurse.

You will contribute to the constantly evolving field of bear medicine and management and will be expected to have a high degree of clinical skill and a passion for ongoing self-education.


Requirements
§  3 to 5 years work experience in veterinary practice, wildlife rehabilitation, zoo medicine or a specialist referral centre. (Less experienced candidates with the appropriate personal attributes will be considered)
§  Qualified Veterinary Nurse with Veterinary Nursing Degree (Degree level qualification in related field will be considered)
§  Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential
§  Strong work ethic, good humor and common sense
§  Applicants must have proficient computer skills including competency with word & excel software
§  Ability to live and work closely with the rest of the team comprising both western and local staff
§  Cultural sensitivity and/or history of working abroad would be beneficial
§  Experience in captive wildlife nursing, rehabilitation or animal welfare work would be beneficial 
§  Suitable candidates must be able to commit for a minimum of 2 years

Appointment is full-time, five (5) days a week with some weekend work applicable.

Presenter - Newquay Zoo



PRESENTER

Newquay Zoo is part of the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, a registered education, scientific and conservation charity established in 1957.
An opportunity has arisen for a presenter at Newquay zoo. The scope of the post is to deliver high-quality, positive and engaging communications on conservation and biodiversity issues for all ages - to enable audiences to understand why biodiversity matters, improve their understanding of the role of environmental parks in conservation and motivate and empower them to take action to conserve biodiversity.
Hours of work:
This is an initial one year fixed term part time contract subject to successful probationary period. The hours of work will be from Saturday – Monday from 10 am – 4pm. There may also be additional hours as needed during holidays and peak visitor times.
Rate of pay: £7.02 per hour
Education required
Essential: GCSE Science and/or Geography
Desirable: A degree in biological science, conservation or relevant related FdSc, BSc level or above.
Experience required
Essential: Demonstrable enthusiasm for communicating conservation and biodiversity issues to a wide audience.
Desirable: Previous work at a conservation/education based environment or visitor attraction.  Experience delivering presentations and running educational activities for children and/or adults.
Main Duties:
  • Deliver a daily programme of presentations and activities for all visitors.
  • Lead experience days, tours and informative talks for individuals and groups.
  • Assist planning and delivery of activities for out of school hours activities e.g. clubs and summer schools.
  • Select appropriate materials for delivery to a wide age and ability range, including special needs.
  • Assist with care of any artefacts and animals (mainly minibeasts) housed within the education department.
  • Assist with delivery of Zoo events and campaigns.
  • Assist with general duties involved in running the education service, including administrative tasks.
  • Promote the work of the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust. 
  • Carry out any other relevant duties, as directed by line manager or head of department.
  • Work involves weekend and seasonal hours as well as occasional evening work, for which time is taken in lieu where appropriate.
