Animal Curator

Responsible to:                      General Manager
Responsible for:         Animal Team and Animals
Hours per week:        40 – 45 including at least two weekends per month
Salary:                                    £30,000pa

Zoos and aquariums hire animal curators to manage their animal collections. An animal curator's job responsibilities range from acquiring new animals and supervising the keepers that handle day-to-day animal feeding and care, to scheduling veterinary visits and assisting in designing exhibits. Curators' duties are broader than those of keepers, although curators do assist keepers in the handling of animals from time to time.

Hobbledown is a new indoor, all-weather park with a collection of over 200 exotic and domestic animals, mysterically based around a children’s story that encompasses characters, animals and a world of exciting play.

Responsibility and Expectations
  • Manage a collection of domestic and exotic animals to include all day to day husbandry and feeding schedules
  • Maintain all legal and ethical documentation including daily checks; clinical, operational and welfare
  • Aspire to develop and increase a current collection including the acquisition of species, enclosure design and breeding programme / control, whilst being aligned to the current and future theme of Hobbledown
  • Manage all veterinary protocols and schedules, both routine and ad hoc
  • Manage a small team of keepers and volunteers on a day to day basis with the responsibility of their training, welfare and discipline with a hands on, ‘leading by example’ approach
  • Develop a volunteer programme
  • Maintain and develop a customer interaction programme, ideally unique to Hobbledown
  • Aspire to make the animal experience as positive and as unique as all other areas of Hobbledown by allowing your experience and imagination to influence the expansion of Hobbledown
  • Create, maintain and develop an education and conservation programme
  • Be able to manage the Health and Safety requirement within a visitor attraction

Experience and Qualifications
  • Experienced Head Keeper ready to progress with a minimum of 5 years supervisory or management experience at a reputed collection
  • Understanding of zoo licence criteria, and participation in a zoo licence inspection
  • Experience with breeding programmes, zoonosis protocol, enrichment and preventative medicines
  • Proven track record of coaching and developing a zoo team
  • Ambassador of customer service including the delivery, engagement and assessment of talks and presentations
  • A clear understanding of how to create and implement Health and Safety protocols and procedures
  • Some experience with project managing from concept design to build completion

A qualification in an animal related discipline would be beneficial

The manager of the aquarium division will drive its future development and take it to state of the art world standards in terms of visitor experience.

A scientific background is preferred, but not necessarily in marine biology, as specialist expertise resides in the existing aquarium team of some 10 specialists in aquarium life.

The ideal candidate would typically come from a managerial position in an aquarium, zoo, nature park, museum, theme park etc and have a deep interest in marine life.  This position is as much about managing people, projects and processes as it is about managing living creatures.

The candidate may be of any nationality, and is expected to be resident in Southern France, close to Monaco.

Reporting line:
This position reports to the Director, Operations of the Institut Océanographique (Musée Océanographique de Monaco)

Main responsibilities:
Developing the range of species represented in the aquarium.
Supervise health and safety aspects of aquaculture/incubation.
Support the Director, Operations in purchasing, budgets, development of new projects, regulatory compliance, etc.
Receiving VIP, media and other professional visitor groups is part of the job.
Must be able to work effectively with different teams at the oceanographic museum (PR and communications, events management, cultural heritage, etc)

Desired Skills

A scientific degree is preferred but the candidate must have the requisite experience in the for-profit sector, not in academia or NGOs.

The candidate must have a good working knowledge of French, the verbal and written language of communication at the oceanographic museum.

An exciting position has become available for the post of Bird Keeper at Newquay Zoo.  The post requires a hardworking, dedicated, enthusiastic and reliable individual, who will be expected to work on their own initiative and as part of a team, and be committed to the stimulating development of the expanding bird section and zoo.

The ideal candidate should possess at least 4 years bird keeping experience and will have preferably completed, and passed, the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals.

Duties will include attending to the husbandry requirements of a variety of different bird species, as directed by a Senior Keeper or the Head Keeper.  Daily observations of individual birds, completion of relevant records, and having the ability to answer visitors’ questions as required, in a courteous and informative manner, are fundamental for this position.

1. Job Purpose
To lead the development and coordination of Durrell’s data management and analysis capabilities in support of the research, monitoring, evaluation and impact measurement of its conservation programmes
Context
Durrell is an international conservation charity with a mission of saving species from extinction. Founded by author and naturalist Gerald Durrell, its headquarters are in Jersey, where it has a wildlife park, a conservation academy and from where it coordinates conservation field programmes in Madagascar, Mauritius, Caribbean and beyond.
Durrell’s conservation programmes now demand increasing levels of research, monitoring, evaluation and impact measurement. These activities require far more effective and intensive management, analysis, reporting and communication of biological, social and management data.  This new role will lead the development and coordination of our capabilities to manage and analyse data for multiple research, programme management and communications uses.
We are seeking a highly motivated individual who will work right across Durrell’s conservation programmes and therefore must be a team player and have excellent communication skills.  They will have a good scientific understanding and experience of field research and biodiversity conservation, preferably with a higher degree in a biological science, and possess a high level of technical skills in data management and statistical analysis. Based at our Conservation Science office in Bath, UK, the Conservation Scientist will report to the Trust’s Head of Conservation Science and will supervise an internship programme as well as provide functional management of a Data Manager position based in Madagascar.  




2.       Principal Accountabilities

2.1    Support the Heads of Conservation Science and Field Programmes to design and roll-out new conservation programme monitoring and evaluation frameworks and systems.

2.2         Manage all the data requirements for the Durrell Index, the Trust’s flagship conservation impact measurement and communication tool.

2.3         For priority conservation projects, design and implement data management tools and systems to enable efficient flows of data from the field, and ensure that data are stored securely, easily retrievable and ready for analysis.

2.4         Work with academic and conservation partners in the design and implementation of data management systems as part of collaborative programmes.

2.5         Conduct statistical analysis for ongoing field and wildlife park-based research and monitoring activities and provide GIS technical support to project managers as required. In collaboration with the Head of Conservation Science, design an annual calendar of data analysis for monitoring programmes and the reporting of results to relevant stakeholders.

2.6         Conduct desk-based research in support of the conservation programmes as required.

2.7         Provide functional management of an in-country data manager based within the Trust’s Madagascar programme to oversee technical elements of this role and to develop their skills.

2.8    Supervise a rolling internship programme which will work in the area of conservation data management and analysis.

2.9       Training of field and wildlife park staff in new data management systems as required.

2.10   Support the Heads of Conservation Science and Field Programmes in reporting to the Trust’s Board of Trustees, fund-raising team and major donors by providing results and data outputs as required.




3.       Knowledge and Skill
3.1           A highly competent quantitative ecologist, preferably with a higher degree in the biological sciences and experience of conducting biological or socio-ecological research in the field.

3.2           Highly computer literate and competent in a range of statistical techniques and software packages, particularly R, Distance and ArcGIS.

3.5     Can demonstrate strong team-working skills, with experience of staff management an advantage.

3.6           Strong planning and organisational skills and able to manage heavy and complex workloads with multiple demands from a wide variety of projects, programmes and people.

3.7           Strong written communication skills with experience of writing reports to a range of technical and non-technical audiences.

3.8           Experience of working in collaborative projects with multiple organisational partners and people from a wide range of different cultures.

3.9     Experience with the theory and practice of conservation monitoring and evaluation would be advantageous.

3.10   Experience in training colleagues in new systems, techniques and tools would be advantageous.

3.11   Ability to travel to Durrell’s HQ in Jersey, around the UK and to our field programme sites.

Situated near Canterbury in Kent, Howletts Wild Animal Park works in conjunction with The Aspinall Foundation; a charity committed to conservation and the reintroduction of captive bred species back into their natural habitats.

We have 2 exciting placements available for enthusiastic individuals wanting to gain valuable zoo animal keeping experience through working alongside keepers who will provide coaching and mentoring throughout the internship. The successful candidates will benefit from being involved in our ground breaking reintroduction projects. There is one placement available for the Gorilla Section and one for the Elephant Section, not a combination of the two.

We are looking for candidates who are willing to commit to a 6-12 month term and be willing and available to come in from 8am to 5pm, 5 days per week which will include weekends.

These placements are physically demanding positions so candidates must be physically fit, self motivated and have a genuine interest in conservation and zoo animal care. A valid driving licence is required.

As we are a Registered Charity, funded entirely by visitor fees and donations, we regret we are unable to offer any wages or salary for the placement.  We will provide a full uniform and discount at the parks food outlets for the days that you attend work. No other financial benefits are offered.   Candidates will need to have the ability to financially support themselves for the entire length of the internship. Please be aware that unfortunately we are unable to offer accommodation. However, we do offer comprehensive practical training which provides significant insight into the functioning of a successful and responsible zoological collection, the aim being to promote your future employability.

Reporting to the Managing Director, the U.S. Program Manager (USPM) will drive the expansion of our U.S. media presence in a joint program with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and other partners to reduce illegal wildlife consumption. Placing our messages on national television and securing video and billboard space and airports, zoos and other locations, the USPM may be based in Washington DC or San Francisco, but will travel extensively around the country developing partnerships.
In addition they will oversee and expand WildAid’s East Coast relations, primarily with government, NGO partners and media. The successful candidate will bring creativity and resourcefulness to build WildAid’s Washington and East Coast presence driving fundraising and media outreach efforts there. This role is both strategic and hands-on in nature; as well as working with government and partner funders preparing proposals and reports and developing new partnerships.

KEY PRIORITIES
Securing placement for WildAid communications materials in the United States

The USPM will seek out partners including media outlets (TV, billboard, print, social media), zoos and aquaria and airports for placement of WildAid materials. The successful candidate will manage the creation and distribution of compelling content for online, media, publications, press kits and fundraising materials.

Securing and maintaining funding partnerships

WildAid is in advanced discussions on funding opportunities with the US Government as well as multilateral agencies. On the NGOs side WildAid works with WWF, African Wildlife Foundation and RARE, among others and seeks to develop other partnerships. The USPM will liaise with these agencies to prepare proposals, provide reports, secure funding and manage ongoing relations. They will also help build awareness of WildAid’s Marine Protection Program and build partners in this field. The USPM will also recruit and cultivate private foundation and major individual donors, primarily in Washington DC and New York.

KEY COMPETENCIES & IDEAL PROFILE
We seek an innovative, resourceful go-getter who is experienced in developing effective funding partnerships. This individual will be inspired by the opportunity to play a pivotal role in WildAid’s efforts to end the illegal wildlife trade, and develop East Coast relations for WildAid.

Ideal candidates will have five or more years of increasingly responsible roles in programs and or development, preferably at afast-paced, growth-oriented organization. Demonstrated experience in securing partnerships and funding, from inception through implementation is strongly desired.

Experience in media distribution at some level would also be desirable 

WildAid is a small, lean, and growing organization. All staff members must be comfortable in an entrepreneurial, start-up culture. Strong project management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple, often competing demands is critical. The successful candidate must be able to work very independently without a great deal of supervision. S/he must also have excellent interpersonal skills to influence and collaborate with staff, volunteers, and pro bono partners. Familiarity with environmental advocacy and wildlife protection programs will be an asset.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate should have a minimum of five years related work experience. Excellent writing and editing skills are necessary for the role, as is extensive experience in dealing with government agencies. Personal qualities of integrity and dedication to WildAid’s mission are important. A Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required.

Description: Learning Officers play a key role in helping raise awareness of knowledge of wildlife conservation to the Park’s guests both on and offsite. This is done through the delivery of a range of formal learning sessions such as hands on Discovery Sessions, guided walks, guided tours and outreach sessions (primarily to school audiences, but also includes pre-school, college and university groups), informal learning activities including Friendly Animal Encounters, African Village Encounters, craft sessions and fundraising activities.

Informal encounters occur on a daily basis, with additional themed encounters running through special events. Craft sessions and fundraising activities run most weekends and throughout holiday periods. Formal learning sessions are dependent on the needs of the schools visiting, and although generally occur through the busy Summer term, may be booked at any time of the year.

Alongside the formal and informal education activities, Learning Officers are responsible for carrying out daily husbandry of the department’s animal collection, and keeping the department clean and tidy. The animal collection usually includes cockroaches, millipedes, stick insects, snails, tree frogs, geckos, bearded dragons, corn snakes, milk snakes, tarantulas, rats, ferrets, skunks, armadillos, chinchillas, raccoon dogs and tenrecs. Although full training is provided, suitable applicants would be expected to have a good knowledge of small animal husbandry, and experience in handling at least a selection of the animals above.

Senior Learning Officers are responsible for co-ordinating the team, ensuring all department tasks are carried out efficiently on a daily basis. Senior Learning Officer (formal) is responsible for co-ordinating all of the formal learning planning and preparations, including lesson plans, presentations and resource packs for Discovery Sessions, guided walks and tours, and outreach sessions. Ensuring all standard sessions are kept up to date in line with the curriculum, all Learning Officers are delivering the sessions to the same exceptional standard throughout the year, and developing any new bespoke sessions as and when they are requested.

This particular role requires someone who is confident and customer focused, has excellent communication skills and has experience presenting educational content to groups. In particular the successful applicant will need to demonstrate a wide range of experience in a formal teaching environment with a range of ages and topics. Good knowledge of the curriculum and experience planning and preparing formal teaching sessions is essential. Due to driving company vehicles for outreach sessions, we are looking for applicants who have full, valid drivers licenses.

Weekend work and flexibility in working hours is essential to this role.
