Field Programme Coordinator, SE Asia

Field Programme Coordinator, SE Asia

Chester Zoo is the UK’s No.1 top zoo, providing visitors with a fun-packed day out, but with a serious mission - to be a major force in conserving biodiversity worldwide.

To save species from extinction we need dedicated and passionate individuals. We are recruiting a Field Programme Coordinator to work with like-minded individuals in our Field Programmes Team. You’ll also be working closely with various other zoo teams who contribute to our conservation work and, of course, with our partners overseas.

SE Asia is a globally recognised biodiversity hotspot, and a major focal region for Chester Zoo conservation activities – both in the zoo through major exhibits such as Islands and breeding programmes for various threatened SE Asian species, and also in the field through a range of projects working with various partners in Indonesia and the Philippines.

The Field Programme Coordinator will manage and develop existing projects and partnerships whilst also developing new initiatives in this region. A proportion of the Field Programme Coordinator post will also be dedicated to supporting the IUCN SSC Asian Wild Cattle Specialist Group. Through this exciting opportunity the post holder will act as a catalyst for collaborative field activities, helping develop and implement the Action Indonesia Initiatives – a one plan approach for Babirusa, Banteng and Anoa.

The Field Programme Coordinator will need to be someone who understands biodiversity conservation – not only the theory, but also practical experience of how to transfer theory into action to deliver results. We are looking for someone with a minimum of an MSc or equivalent in a conservation related subject and experience of managing conservation projects. The Field Programme Coordinator will coordinate research to meet conservation aims and will need experience in conducting field research, publishing and presenting scientific material.

Superb communication skills will be vital; the Field Programme Coordinator will need to be an excellent communicator, able to work in different cultures and negotiate effective partnerships to achieve project objectives. We also need to tell the world what we are doing, bring in funding and making the most of the varied expertise we have in the zoo – so you’ll be working closely with many different zoo teams; as well as a wide variety of external partners including the IUCN, EAZA, AZA, Indonesian Zoo Association and local NGOs.

This is a full-time position (35 hours per week, Monday-Friday) based at Chester Zoo, but with significant periods spent in the field. The salary is £26,449 per annum for a 35 hour week.

Should you require any further information regarding the role, please contact Scott Wilson, Head of Field Programmes, in the first instance at s.wilson@chesterzoo.org.

To apply for this position, please provide your current CV and a covering letter stating why you believe you should be considered for our Field Programme Coordinator role.
