We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Zoo Rangers to join our award winning Discovery & Learning team.

The Role:

Our Zoo Rangers deliver public education around the Zoo, including animal talks and tours, one to one engagement, exhibition supervision, interpretation and other educational activities. Audiences of all ages, and vary from 1 to 500 or more, so there is lots of public interaction requiring a confident and outgoing personality.

The successful candidate will have:

•        A degree in Zoo Biology or a conservation-related field, and a wide ranging knowledge of the natural world and animal behaviours
•        A creative mind, and able to develop and deliver engaging, high quality public engagement opportunities for our visitors
•        Excellent customer service skills, and able to work alone as well as part of a team
•        Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as the role is all about effective communication
•        Good organisational and time management skills
•        A good working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office packages, as well as iPads and apps

A good working knowledge and experience of zoo conservation education, including research, would be desirable, as is a good knowledge of our animal collection and conservation work.

The salary for this role £19,133.59 per annum based on 35 hours per week working 10 days out of 14, including weekends and Bank Holidays as rostered, with the occasional need for evening working. Animal Keeper



Animal Keeper 
(Tropical World)


Salary details: A1 - £15,916

37 hours per week over 7 days on a rota system.

If you have a commitment to a high standard of animal husbandry and an NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in Animal Care – we may have just the job for you as an Animal Keeper at our popular Tropical World attraction in Leeds, which houses a variety of exotic animals, reptiles and aquatics.

You will need to work as part of the team on a 7 day rota basis and should have specific knowledge related to the need of aquatics, exotic species and their specialised requirements. Experience in working with large mammals is a desirable element. You will assist with the feeding and movement of the animals, cleaning, decorating and maintaining the enclosures and ponds, which will involve bending and lifting and keeping accurate records relating to animal welfare.

Flamingo Land Zoo

Flamingo Land Zoo is looking for an experienced zookeeper to join our team.  Flamingo Land is one of the leading tourist attractions in the UK, attracting more than 1.4 million visitors each year.  The zoo currently has over 130 species across a range of different taxa.  We have an active education department, our own research institute (in collaboration with the University of York) and an award winning conservation project in Tanzania.  The zoo is also a member of BIAZA, EAZA and WAZA. 

The successful candidate will join our existing team of zookeepers and will work with a wide variety of animals, including ungulates, primates, carnivores and more.  All of our zookeepers are encouraged to participate in a range of activities which include research, environmental enrichment and education. 

The successful candidate will ideally have
•        Experience of working in a zoological collection
•        Passed the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (or equivalent)
•        A current driving licence (preferred)
•        Experience with any of the above mentioned taxa (you will receive direct training in the husbandry of all species at Flamingo Land)
•        Excellent communication skills
•        Experience of delivering keeper talks and visitor engagement activities
•        Computer knowledge and experience of ZIMS would be an advantage

Our zookeepers work five days out of seven with 30 days annual leave.  A competitive salary is provided along with a staff reward scheme.

Reptile Supervisor

The Reptile Supervisor performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects Al Ain Zoo’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife and conservation. The position is responsible for the daily supervision of the safe care and handling of an assigned reptile collection and constantly demonstrates leadership qualities and abilities to engage positive relationship with his team and zoo customers. This position requires competencies and enough knowledge to implement high standers of animal husbandry techniques and can ensure effective implementation of the health and safety policies. This position also requires knowledge and ability to develop /help to develop modern animal facilities. He /She must have reasonably good knowledge in animal species. 

Key duties include but not limited to:
•        Supervises assigned staff
•        Assures feeding schedules and dietary requirements are met
•        Oversees and coordinates reproduction, hatching, and neonate care programs
•        Participates in establishing and updating standard operating procedures
•        Ensures accurate and complete records of animal activities are maintained
•        Participates in planning for the developing and modifying of exhibits
•        Oversees/coordinates animal introductions, moves, restraints, and shipments.
•        Accompanies veterinary staff on medical rounds and assures procedures are followed.
•        Regularly inspects and observes assigned collection for overall health and welfare.

•        Prepare annual work plans for the assigned area.

The Supervisor of Animal training performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects Al Ain Zoo’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife and conservation. This position is required for managing the day to day aspects of the animal training, organizing public shows, educational demonstrations and staff management. Also supervises, performs a wide variety of functions in the training, handling and care of animals used for public appearances and contact, such as educational programs, animal shows. This position supervises assigned staff and provides them support and guidance in animal training procedures. This position requires knowledge of high standards of animal husbandry techniques and welfare. This position requires ability and advance knowledge for training a variety of animal species.

Key duties include but not limited to:
•        Assures animal feeding schedules and dietary requirements are met
•        Arrange / perform animal training and care programs
•        Participates in establishing and updating Standard Operating procedures
•        Work closely with animal care supervisors to establish and maintain animal training programs
•        Ensures accurate and complete records of animal activities are maintained
•        Participates in planning the developing and modifying of animal facilities

•        Makes informational presentations to the public

Curator of Birds and Reptiles


Curator of Birds and Reptiles

The Curator performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects Al Ain Zoo’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife, conservation. The Coordinator is responsible for and oversees all aspects of the safe care and handling of an assigned animal collection; contributes to collection strategic planning. This position will participate in preparation of the departmental annual work plans and budget as well as policies relevant to the assigned area of work.

Key duties include:

•        Evaluates, adjusts and coordinates husbandry standards and techniques applied to an assigned animal collection according to a zoo master plan.
•        Plans, oversees, directs implementation and coordination of animal husbandry programs, reproduction, neonatal care, introductions, moves, restraints and shipments; regularly inspects and observes assigned collection for overall health and welfare.
•        Ensures dietary requirements of the assigned collection are met and fulfilled.
•        Manages and evaluates the performance of animal supervisory staff as assigned.
•        Oversees and participates in the preparation and maintenance of a variety of collection records required for collection management.
•        Assures the meeting of legal requirements in collection management as well as domestic and international shipping of animals; develops new techniques as required to meet animal shipment regulations; may assist in the acquisition of permits.
•        Assures effective organizational communication and team building, provides specialized training relative to collection husbandry.
•        Executes, and under direction may implement, animal sales, loans, trades and purchases according to zoo collection master plan.
•        Participates in studbook updates and committees.
•        Participates in exhibit and facility planning, research and design.
•        Assures assigned animal collection operations comply with established protocols, professional standards and government regulations.

•        Ensure proper training and capacity building for senior keepers and keepers is on-going.
