Veterinary Nurse – Fixed Term



We have an exciting short term opportunity for a Veterinary nurse who would like a taste of what it is like to work in The Nest at Wellington Zoo. Opened in December 2009, The Nest is an unparalleled facility in New Zealand for providing care to Zoo animals, rehabilitation of native species including marine mammals and birds, and research facility.


We are looking for a passionate and experienced Veterinary Nurse to cover a permanent employee who is taking 6 months parental leave from the 18th October 2010. You will need to be a skilled Veterinary Nurse who can work 40 hours per week and you will need to be happy to work rostered hours including weekends.


In the role of Veterinary Nurse you will be responsible for providing veterinary nursing and husbandry care to our collection animals, as well as to injured and sick animals from outside the Zoo. Working in The Nest, you will be involved in visitor experience with daily procedures on display for our visitors. You will be jointly responsible for the maintenance of animal health, quarantine procedures and maintenance of medical records as well as correct storage of pharmaceuticals. An interest or previous experience with exotic and avian patients would be advantageous.

We have an opportunity for a team player with excellent communication skills to be part of our Programmes Team, responsible for conservation based animal presentations in the Zoo’s Wild Theatre, animal training and well as providing daily care to our collection. The position is full time (40 hours per week on a 5 day a week roster including Saturdays and Sundays).

So, if you can demonstrate…

  • The completion of the National Certificate in Captive Wild Animal Management or equivalent qualification.
  • A sound experience in captive animal keeping and modern husbandry techniques.
  • Successful application of behavioural and environmental enrichment techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • The ability to work with limited supervision, solve problems and work well in a team environment.
  • The ability to work on a roster that includes weekends and public holidays.
  • Good written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Have a background in Animal Training and Conditioning
  • An ability to be flexible and maintain calm demeanour when working with potentially difficult, dangerous, and unpredictable animals and birds
  • A comprehensive knowledge of conservation issues and the role of the modern Zoo

Commencing in November and based at Adelaide Zoo Animal Health Centre this is a “hands on” Team Leader position, at a similar level to a Curator and responsible for the Veterinary Team and the delivery of clinical support to the animal collections across three sites including Monarto Zoo and Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary.

With five direct reports – four vets and the Hospital Manger, there is a substantial focus on leading and managing the team and the service outputs and standards of the Animal Health Department. The role also includes reviewing existing processes and practices, managing and growing some external relationships and managing the department budget.

Adelaide Zoo is renowned for its substantial bird collection and reptile husbandry ability. The section has over 1200 specimens of birds and 170 reptiles, including a number of conservation programme species. The combination of these two sections is a new approach and we are seeking a leader who can work closely with the Director and Curator to align the collection to the strategic goals including conservation, exciting visitor experiences and education for both visitors and fellow husbandry staff across the region.

Our Children’s Zoo and the Envirodome and the interactive experiences provided are highlights of many visitors’ experience, delivering powerful emotive learning experiences for young and old alike. Many of the species used in ‘up close and personal’ experiences, including the Zoo Mobile, are native species.

This position is also responsible, with the Curator, for overseeing the species husbandry component and future collection planning for Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary – purely native species. We will soon be focussing on how visitors get to meet some of the many native species held behind the scenes and the incumbent will be involved in master planning of Monarto Zoo to facilitate this.

Most of the exhibits on this section are relatively modern but some display challenges remain. A proven ability with training/conditioning and enrichment programmes is essential and experience with linking ex and in-situ programmes would be an advantage. Behind the Scenes Experiences and visitor presentations are an important part of the daily routine on this section.

Based at Monarto Zoo, in an open plains environment, you will manage a wide variety of carnivores and ungulates. The team face particular challenges with the management of their species and have to adopt some unique approaches to training/conditioning and enrichment. There is a substantial focus on exciting visitor experiences including drive through bus experiences and Keeper presentations with the likes of cheetah and white rhino. We aim to be a regional leader in open range ungulate husbandry and species husbandry of carnivores such as Cheetah, Lions, Hyena and Wild Dogs. For this position we are seeking a proven team player/manager who can take our husbandry programmes and visitor experiences to new heights.

This full time permanent position involves delivering daily talks around the zoo, teaching and evaluating sessions for school groups ( Keystage 1-4), working with several SEN/BESD groups who complete practical programmes on a weekly basis. In addition, the post will involve organising and running conservation fundraising events and co-ordinating the zoo’s work experience programme. We are looking for an enthusiastic, hard working individual with a passion for conservation. Job Title : Program Organisation Supervisor

Objectives : Elephantstay has been operating for over 4 years and although we have achieved alot in this time we need enthusiastic qualified and committed people to move forward and achieve an even better life for elephants.

We are looking for people who want to be a real part of elephant conservation at its best.

Duties and Responsibilities : Duties include cleaning, feeding, diet preparation, exercising and husbandry of elephants. Our primary concern is the elephant’s welfare and earning an income for them. You will have plenty of direct contact with the elephants. You will also be assisting with the people who participate in the Elephantstay program.

You will also be required to assist with the elephant painting project.

Qualifications and Requirements : A minimum of 2 years working with elephants or minimum 5 years working with other animals. (Training of elephants/animals would be an advantage)

A good work ethic.

Ability to follow instructions.

Ablity to give instruction.

Good communication skills.

Sense of humour.

Social skills.

Physically fit.

Ability to work in a hot tropical climate.

Ability to work in a small team with little instruction.

Fluent English speaker.

Culturally sensitive and aware.

Orientation and Training : As part of your training, you will participate in the Elephantstay program for 3 days. Please check the website for additional information. After that you will be under the supervision and training of the Operations Manager.

Work Schedule: Successful applicants will be expected to work 6 days a week.

Commitment and Salary: Minimum commitment of one year.
Salary: 5,000 baht per month.

Accommodation and meals are provided on site as part of the salary package.

Work permits will be organised after one month.

Salary does not include airfares, visas, insurance, transfers.

Benefits : The work is free contact with elephants. At this stage we have ten elephants under our management, which will be the main elephants you will be getting to know and be working with. We have about 90 elephants on site so you will have exposure and contact with many of them including baby elephants still with their mothers, and bull elephants.

Elephantstay is situated in the heart of a working elephant village so there is also the advantage of learning about and interacting with people from another culture.

Special Considerations : Working with elephants in free contact can be a physically and mentally challenging experience. The work is physically hard and the hours are long. You should expect to start at 7am and finish often late in the evening.

Applicants must be able to lift a minimum of 25 kilos as well as be prepared to work in a hot tropical climate.

Inclusions : Housing is provided on site. Single air-conditioned room and western bathroom, Bedding and towels are provided. Drinking water, tea, coffee, hot chocolate and 3 meals a day are provided on site. Snacks, juices, sodas, alcohol, etc are not provided but can be bought on site.

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation, research and education.

We currently have a vacancy for a Herpetology Senior Keeper to join a busy and diverse section committed to advancing all aspects of zoo-based herpetological practice. The successful candidate will supervise and work alongside keepers to undertake the daily animal care duties, focussing on welfare, hygiene and life support.
They will ensure that all exhibits are of an excellent standard for both animals and visitors alike, and provide outstanding customer care.

The successful candidate will have considerable experience of working in a zoo/aquarium with a diverse reptile and amphibian collection and must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of herpetological husbandry, exhibition, diet and reproduction. They will be qualified to first degree level in a biological related science or equivalent practical experience and have a thorough understanding of the contribution ex situ populations of animals can make to education, science and conservation. The successful candidate will have outstanding observational skills, attention to detail and proven track-record of delivering the highest standards of husbandry and exhibitry. They will be skilled in the natural and artificial theming of exhibits. They will be competent in Microsoft Office packages. They will be able to manage and prioritise a
diverse workload and have organising and problem solving skills. The successful candidate will have experience of supervising a team and working as a member of a team.

Knowledge of ISIS ARKS is desirable. Experience in conducting and publishing scientific research and working in field conservation programmes are desirable.

Salary is £17,166 initially, rising to £19,073 after satisfactory completion of the 6
month probationary period.

Marwell Wildlife is a registered charity dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity and other natural resources.

We are currently looking to recruit an experienced Keeper to work on a mixed species section which includes a range of large hoofstock. Roles and responsibilities will include ensuring high standards of animal welfare, health and animal husbandry at all times and keeping daily checks and records.

Applicants will need to have a minimum of 2 years zoo keeping / wildlife husbandry experience, hold 5 GCSE’s or equivalent and the Advanced National Certificate in the Management of Zoo Animals or equivalent and have a full driving licence valid for the UK.

The successful candidate will be able to work well as part of a team, have the ability to use their initiative, display interest and commitment to animal welfare and conservation, and must possess strong verbal communication skills as talking to members of the public is an essential part of the role.

Two exciting opportunities have arisen at Banham Zoo for Lead Qualified Keepers to join our existing team.

About the role:

Working under the direction of the Head Keeper the successful candidates will work alongside our existing lead qualified keeper with a variety of taxa including primates, cats, hoofstock, birds and small mammals. Flexibility is key to the successful operation of the animal department as a whole and each position will be expected to provide cover and assistance for the others as and when required. The successful candidates will be self motivated and have a hands-on approach to their respective roles and will be expected to lead by example.

Key Objectives:

Care for the animals to the highest possible standards under the direction of the Head Keeper.

Assist and support the Head Keeper in all aspects of animal and staff management.

Work alongside the keepers reporting to these positions, supervising, motivating and generally ensuring that the highest standards are maintained at all times.

About you:

You will have the ANCMZA or an equivalent qualification and have extensive experience in some of the taxa identified above. The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and a proven ability to motivate and manage staff reporting to this position.

You will have a through understanding and interest in modern zoo animal management, including animal enrichment and training using positive behaviour methods.

Be computer literate with a excellent understanding of Microsoft Word and ARKS. A working knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel and Access are desirable.

About us:

Based at Banham Zoo you will work an average 40 hour week with alternate weekends off, however, working hours will be flexible and include bank holidays and occasional evenings.
Some additional weekend cover will be required to provide holiday cover.

Salary and benefits:

These posts attract an annual salary of £19,000 per annum.

In addition to this we are able to offer a company pension scheme, relocation expenses and assistance with accommodation costs will also be available to the successful candidates.
