Flamingo Land zoological department is looking for an experienced zoo keeper to join our team. Flamingo Land is one of the leading tourist attractions in the UK, attracting more than 1.4 million visitors each year. The zoo is in an exciting phase of development that has recently seen the creation of a number of themed zoogeographic areas and the development of the education and conservation departments. The successful candidate will initially be focused on the giraffe, hippo, rhino, zebra, camel, oryx, South America and Australia areas. There will also be an opportunity to be trained on other animal sections within the zoo. All of our zoo keepers are encouraged to participate in a range of activities which include research, environmental enrichment and education.

The successful candidate will have experience working in a zoological collection and will ideally have passed the Advanced National Certificate in the Management of Zoo Animals. Experience with any of the above mentioned species would be an advantage, but you will receive direct training in the husbandry of these species. The successful candidate will be expected to be very personable and able to communicate well with the visitors, including delivering public talks. The successful candidate will also be enthusiastic, reliable and a good team player.

A vacancy has arisen for an Animal Research and Team Leader to work within the Animals, Education and Conservation Department team at Edinburgh Zoo.

This position within Living Links is funded by the University of St Andrews for the first four years.

The successful candidate will have at least 8 years of relevant experience working with exotic animals, with particular knowledge of Primates and will have passed the Advanced National Certificate in the Management of Zoo Animals.

A science degree is desirable, with experience in research, research liaison and/or a relevant post-graduate qualification.

The post will involve weekend and some evening work.

Salary for this post will be in the region of £21,000 depending on experience.

Paignton Zoo Environmental Park is seeking an enthusiastic individual to lead its Education Department.

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Head of Education will be expected to deliver the Zoo’s educational programmes (currently reaching in excess of 40,000 pupils of varying Key Stage development), and the in-house production of graphics and publicity materials.

Co-ordination of learning outputs with the other Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust sites will also be required.

The post holder will liaise with external education bodies, and a broad knowledge of current educational policy together with a keen interest in environmental and conservation issues is essential.

The successful applicant will possess:
-A First degree in a relevant subject, plus a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or equivalent professional qualification.
-Demonstrable experience in educational employment.
-A willingness to travel according to the needs of the job.

Terms and conditions:
-37.5 hours per week
-28 days annual leave per annum (including Bank Holidays)

Due to this continued expansion an exciting opportunity has arisen for three Keeper/Instructors to join our hard working and dynamic Keeper/Instructor team. Ideally with specialist skills and knowledge covering a range of taxonomic groups including Fish, Reptiles, Amphibians and Invertebrates, the successful applicants will possess a vocational qualification in Animal Management or an equivalent discipline at Level 3 or above and have wide ranging experience of animal husbandry in both domestic and zoo animals and species. The role will include supervising students, conducting practical sessions and supporting lecturing staff in providing a high quality, effective provision.

Weekend work is on a Rota basis and evening work may be required.

Applications are invited for the position of Assistant Curator for Mammals. Reporting to the Senior Curator of Animals, this is a hands-on position with the post holder being responsible for the daily care and supervision of the Zoo’s mammal collection as well as supervising the staff involved with their care. There will also be some Curatorial duties as directed by the Senior Curator of Animals.

The position is to cover maternity leave working 80 hours per fortnight as part of the departmental 14 day rota.

The successful applicant will have excellent knowledge of mammal husbandry and captive breeding protocols and will lead a 13 person team. This team has overall responsibility for the daily care of the Zoo’s varied collection of mammals.

The successful applicant will be educated to at least GCSE level, including English and a biological science and hold the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (previously known as ANCMZA) or its equivalent. The ability to supervise staff is essential and having a general knowledge of the conservation and educational roles of zoos is desirable.

The Zoo is currently undergoing reconstruction and the requirement is to be based in Mali and working with a wide range of species, including Lion, Chimpanzees, Hyena, Leopard, Baboons, Hoofstock, reptiles, birds, fish. Animal Outreach Officer - Al Ain Wildlife Park and Resort



The Al Ain Wildlife Park and Resort (AWPR) seek of Animal Outreach Officer.
The Officer will responsible for the care, husbandry and training of the Education Department’s collection of animal ambassadors while also managing the building in which they are housed.

The Animal Outreach Officer will be report to the senior Animal Ourreach Officer and will be responsible for

(1) Daily husbandry, behavioral training and enrichment of all animals in the Education animal ambassador collection,

(2) Provide a safe environment for the animals, themselves, their co-workers and AWPR guests by identifying any potential safety hazards,

(3) Assist the Animal Outreach Officer in the scheduling of animals attending all programs, on or off-site,

(4) Adhere to area protocols and ensure that they are kept up to date,

(5) Ensure the proper handling, transport and use of all ambassador animals,

(6) Create and present exceptional and dynamic interpretive programs (formal and informal) featuring live animals on a daily basis year round,

(7) Provide excellent and professional communication with all AWPR staff, teachers and other community members, and

(8) Submit daily animal reports and keep detailed records on their training and use in programs.

The ideal candidate will have experience in managing a diverse animal collection. The position will suit an individual with a passion for arid land animals who is comfortable working in a multidisciplinary institution and is committed to establishing the highest professional standards.

The successful candidate should have extensive practical experience and should have 3 to 5 years relevant experience in an important zoological institution.

The Al Ain Wildlife Park (AWPR) first developed as Al Ain Zoo in 1968 by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan is being redeveloped by the Abu Dhabi government as an expanded 900 hectare integrated biodiversity institution and resort.
The new park will feature extensive exhibits of arid land biodiversity including five World Desert Habitats illustrating the animals, plants, landscapes and cultures of specific desert ecoregions, the Oasis Gardens, five Safaris exhibiting the landscapes and large mammals of five specific deserts.

Phase 1 will open in November 2015 and will include the opening of the African World Desert based on the Samburu Region of Northern Kenya. The new Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre is a new world class museum exhibiting the geology, culture and biodiversity of the United Arab Emirates and is a tribute to the environmental heritage of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The project has a strong conservation foundation with ongoing ex situ and in-country biodiversity projects in Arabia and NE Africa and developing partnerships with zoos, botanic gardens and cultural institutions.

The current zoo site is being redeveloped as a new Conservation Breeding Centre dedicated to conservation and research.

The project is being developed using the Abu Dhabi government’s sustainability guidelines (ESTIDAMA) and is committed to inspiring guests and visitors through creating an extraordinary set of landscape experiences and biodiversity encounters.

AWPR is an integral part of the government of Abu Dhabi’s tourist infrastructure and a key component in the nation’s strategy of developing knowledge based economy. AWPR is a member of WAZA and is working towards full compliance with EAZA standards and policies.

Our Assistant Presenters are responsible for improving the visitors’ experience to the Zoo. We have three vacancies to join our Presenter Team. The posts demand lots of public interaction, requiring a confident and outgoing personality and work is both indoors and outdoors.

Acting as an information point the successful candidate will be helping visitors to enjoy their day and be able to answer their questions. They will look after visitors in the Dinosaurs at Large! Exhibition, animal exhibits (including Fruit Bat Forest) and in our visitor centre (this may include running activities like storytelling, touch-tables, chats and demonstrations),

The successful candidates will have a wide-ranging and in-depth knowledge of the natural world (including dinosaurs) and good communication skills. They will have good working knowledge and experience of delivering Zoo Education. They will be able to work as part of a team and individually and have the ability to provide excellent customer care. The successful candidate will have good knowledge of conservation issues.

The successful candidate will ideally have a good knowledge of Chester Zoo’s animal collection and conservation work and they will ideally have experience of public speaking or guided tours.

This post is subject to an enhanced CRB check.

Work is 5 days in 7, including bank holidays and every weekend. Hours are 9.30am to 5pm daily. The rate of pay is £6.05 per hour (Subject to Job Evaluation), with a probationary period. The contracts will run from 11th July to 4th September 2011.

Manager of Animal Collections



The Al Ain Wildlife Park and Resort (AWPR) is seeking a Manager of Animal Collections to coordinate and manage the operations of a globally important collection of desert animals with a focus on threatened arid land ungulates, carnivores and birds – with a geographical focus on Arabia, NE Africa, Sahara-Sahel and arid Asia.

The post will develop a world class cadre of staff that will deliver the highest standards of animal care.

The successful candidate will work with the Director of Animal Collections to ensure that AWPR grows as an active contributor to national, regional and international breeding and reintroduction projects and an active participant in EAZA and WAZA activities.

The Manager of Animal Collections reports to the Director of Animal Collections and will be responsible for:

(1) the management of a diverse animal collection, specifically responsible for developing standard operating procedures for all aspects of collection management,

(2) staff administration, development and training, in particular the development of a skilled and enthusiastic animal collection team,

(3) contributing to the design and operation of new animal exhibits, visitor experiences and educational resources and ensuring the operational readiness of those exhibits,

(4) developing and implementing annual work plans and budgets, maintenance and renovation schedules,

(5) contributing to applied conservation and research programmes,

(6) delivering the highest standards of professional animal care and welfare, including behavioural enrichment,

(8) ensuring safe conditions for staff, animals and guests, (9) delivering and promoting potent inter-departmental and inter-institutional partnerships, particularly with the Operations, Property Development Veterinary, Conservation and Education teams.

The ideal candidate will have experience in managing a diverse animal collection and a commitment to establishing the highest standards of care and welfare.

The position will suit an individual with a passion for arid land animals who is comfortable working in a multidisciplinary and multicultural institution and working beyond the traditions of a zoo.

The successful candidate should have an advanced degree in a relevant zoological, ecological or veterinary discipline. The candidate should have 5 to 10 years leadership experience in an important zoological institution. Experience in the development, design, construction and operation of new projects/exhibits is important.

The Al Ain Wildlife Park (AWPR) first developed as Al Ain Zoo in 1968 by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan is being redeveloped by the Abu Dhabi government as an expanded 900 hectare integrated biodiversity institution and resort.
The new park will feature extensive exhibits of arid land biodiversity including five World Desert Habitats illustrating the animals, plants, landscapes and cultures of specific desert ecoregions, the Oasis Gardens, five Safaris exhibiting the landscapes and large mammals of five specific deserts.

Phase 1 will open in November 2015 and will include the opening of the African World Desert based on the Samburu Region of Northern Kenya. The new Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre is a new world class museum exhibiting the geology, culture and biodiversity of the United Arab Emirates and is a tribute to the environmental heritage of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The project has a strong conservation foundation with ongoing ex situ and in-country biodiversity projects in Arabia and NE Africa and developing partnerships with zoos, botanic gardens and cultural institutions.

The current zoo site is being redeveloped as a new Conservation Breeding Centre dedicated to conservation and research.

The project is being developed using the Abu Dhabi government’s sustainability guidelines (ESTIDAMA) and is committed to inspiring guests and visitors through creating an extraordinary set of landscape experiences and biodiversity encounters.

AWPR is an integral part of the government of Abu Dhabi’s tourist infrastructure and a key component in the nation’s strategy of developing knowledge based economy. AWPR is a member of WAZA and is working towards full compliance with EAZA standards and policies.

An excellent opportunity has arisen at Reaseheath College for a Section Manager in Animal Management to provide dynamic leadership to the Animal Management team and ensure that Reaseheath maintains and enhances its reputation as the leading land based provider in the UK.

Working at senior level the successful applicant will have, among other criteria, a track record of working in partnership with industry, leading productive and successful teams in an educational establishment, a Degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline, experience of budget management and financial reporting, and a proven ability to create and drive through innovative strategy. Passionate about the industry and highly self-motivated, your attitude, approach and enthusiasm will embody your vision for the business.

Our £4 million Animal Management training centre opened in 2010 and offers world class facilities including rooms for reptiles, amphibians and fish, a mammal house, teaching and meeting rooms and an impressive entrance to the college’s zoo. We have 40 specialist staff, over 800 students and more than 1000 animals of around 200 species.
