Responsibilities: Dolphin Cove (Cayman) Ltd is offering an exciting and engaging internship for individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in the marine mammal training field. This internship will provide candidates a unique opportunity to work very closely around Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and a variety of exotic birds, supervised at all times by professional and experienced trainers. Gaining not only marine mammal and bird training skills, but human care knowledge as well, successful candidates will have the opportunity to obtain firsthand experience by assisting with daily husbandry, training and play sessions, acquire and sharpen their public speaking skills, assist with lagoon and property maintenance as well as provide assistance for the bird team on a regular basis. Minor administrative work related to the company and the animals will also be required, as well as any other related duties asked of them.


Requirements: Successful candidates should posses a positive attitude, good communication, observation and organizational skills, with the ability to accept direction, work well with others as part of a team as well as individually when required. An interest and general knowledge in marine life and animal conservation is highly recommended. Candidates must be willing to commit to an approximate 3 month internship plan including weekends and bank holidays. Financial stability must be provided, as proof that candidates can financially support themselves for an unpaid stay on Grand Cayman. There is a shared intern house available to rent at (maximum 3 people) approximately $600KYD per month, with utilities approximately $500KYD per month. The shared house is within walking distance to Dolphin Cove, small shops, the beach as well as a direct bus route into town (details regarding the living arrangements will be given upon selection).

If selected, candidates must be financially stable to commit to an approximate 3 month stay on Grand Cayman (arriving on the 29th or 30th of the month, ready to start the internship on the 1st of the month – leaving the island on the 27th or 28th of the month, non negotiable) as well as obtain and provide a clean police report and medical insurance coverage.

Job Title – Animal Experience Presenter
Reporting to the Lead Animal Presenter, the main responsibilities of this role are:

Animal Management
• Undertake delivery of all aspects of Keeper Experience packages, whilst ensuring the animal collection is well managed and looked after, ie, animal welfare and natural behaviours are considered first.

Keeper Experience Coordination
• Undertake meet and greet of all customers
• Undertake health and safety induction of all customers
• Liaise with appropriate staff from Animal Dept, Presentation Team and Zoo Vets to prepare and deliver animal “events” to the customer
• Prepare monthly report on the progress of the Keeper Experience packages for the Lead Animal Presenter in the initial stages of the project and then as agreed to ensure the service develops and progresses commercially

Other
• Continue with professional development where relevant
• Develop the package of events and experiences as appropriate with proposals and accompanying business case


About you
To operate effectively in this role, you must hold the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals or equivalent qualification or experience at SVQ 3 or equivalent level. A minimum of 3 years of practical experience in a zoo or animal-related environment is essential and experience of practically managing a range of animal taxon groups desirable. You must also have up-to-date basic knowledge and understanding of zoo legislation and best practice, along with a sound basis of practical knowledge and skills about good animal management including dietary knowledge. Proven success in animal training or an appropriate qualification in the use of positive reinforcement training is desirable.

You will be an excellent communicator, with proven presentation skills. You will be comfortable working as part of a team and will build strong relationships across the organisation. Customer service will be key to this role and you must have an excellent understanding of the principles involved and how to interact with the public to ensure a memorable experience.


This is an hourly paid position (approx. 20 hours per week) and will involve regular weekend work.  We offer a competitive hourly rate.  Closing date is Monday 12 December.

Do you enjoy a challenge, and are you dedicated to animal welfare? We are looking for a qualified nurse to join our China Moon Bear Rescue Centre in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China.

This is an outstanding opportunity for motivated individuals pursuing a career in wildlife care and welfare. The Veterinary Nurse will work as part of a highly skilled veterinary team to ensure the care of Asiatic black bears (moon bears), and domestic animals at our rescue centre. Appointment is full-time, five days a week plus scheduled weekend work. Out of hours work may be required.

Candidates should be highly motivated with plenty of initiative and should be comfortable with both clinical and non-clinical work. There is a high degree of autonomy in this position, and while you will work closely with other team members you will have distinct areas of responsibility.

You will contribute to the constantly evolving field of bear medicine and management and will be expected to have a high degree of clinical skill and a passion for ongoing self-education.

Ideally you should have between three and five years work experience in a large veterinary practice, wildlife rehabilitation centre, zoo or specialist referral centre. However, less experienced candidates with the appropriate personal attributes will be considered. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential, and good humor and common sense are required. Applicants MUST be able to commit for two years.

Applicants must be proficient using both word and computer software programs. Experience in captive wildlife nursing, rehabilitation or animal welfare work is beneficial but not essential.

You should be comfortable living and working in a small team within a rural setting.

FCC Fleming is looking for a Penguin Trainer for an exciting new project in United Arab Emirates.

The trainers will participate in the husbandry and training of the penguin collection, including the maintenance of holding area, preparation of diets/penguin feeding and the set-up and maintenance of presentation areas.


Key Tasks:

  • Monitor and perform daily feeding and training of Antarctic penguins
  • Monitor penguins during public demonstrations
  • Clean exhibit on a daily basis, including touch-up after presentations
  • Observe penguins for signs of stress or illness
  • Keep records current each day
  • Public speaking for penguin presentations and guest orientation
  • Performs other duties as required


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Zoology or related field or equivalent experience

Key Competencies:
  • Previous experience in maintaining living specimens
  • Ability to work well with staff and supervisors

Volunteers for Neotropical Primate Conservation



Neotropical Primate Conservation is a UK Charity dedicated to the conservation of monkeys and their habitat in the tropical rainforests of South and Central America. We conduct research on ecosystems, protect wilderness areas for the future, reforest degraded habitat, rescue, rehabilitate and reintroduce primates to their natural habitats and promote conservation education and public awareness.

We are seeking volunteers to help at our project in Amazonas, Peru.

Volunteers will collect data on the critically endangered yellow-tailed woolly monkey and other species, participate in habitat restoration and reforestation, and assist in improving local awareness on environmental issues through education activities in rural schools.

4 and 6 week long expeditions are available, starting mid January 2012 and mid February 2012. No qualifications or skills are necessary apart from a basic level of spoken Spanish, good fitness level, adaptation to hard physical work and basic living conditions and a willingness to help. We provide training in field methods, a window into a career as a conservation biologist and an unforgettable experience. It is also
possible to participate as an internship for undergraduate students if organized in advance. In addition to a challenging program of field research, you will visit to the Gocta waterfall, third highest in the world and situated in the heart of the Peruvian cloud forest, and to the ruins of the Chachapoyas citadel of Kuelap.

  • A proven track record of working with Elephants and be familiar with all aspects of elephant management
  • Able to supervise and help develop staff.

Deep Sea World is a market leader visitor attraction and Scotland’s gem based in North Queensferry. Our Aquarium hosts the largest temperate marine display in the UK through its underwater walkthrough tunnel. Other displays include tropical marine, freshwater, reptiles, amphibians and marine mammals.

The responsibility of the Aquarist/Diver will be varied, challenging, but extremely rewarding. A hands on approach is required to ensure you achieve the highest standard of animal care and husbandry.

You will be responsible for maintaining and developing all Deep Sea World’s displays and exhibits, along with promoting public education and awareness in relation to conservation of biodiversity.

In addition to this you will also maintain, clean, tidy and safe standards of all plant rooms; tool rooms, laboratories and quarantine facilities.

The successful candidate will be expected to be very personable and able to communicate well with the visitors as you will be responsible for promoting and participating in public presentations and education sessions, as well as conversing with our visitors whilst carrying out your daily duties around the aquarium.

The role requires you to take members of the public into our main tank (as part of our dive experience package), and to carry out shows and maintenance dives, it is essential that you are qualified to PADI Divemaster or equivalent and hold an in date dive medical.

This is a full time post working on a rota’d basis which includes regular weekends and bank holidays as well as being on call for out of hour’s emergencies.

The Field Conservation and Research Division of the North of England Zoological Society (Chester Zoo) is seeking a Conservation Researcher to join its team to assist in the administration, coordination and development of field conservation programmes.


This role involves:

  • Research: assistance with the development and coordination of research projects, data collection and/or coordination of data collection, data entry and statistical analysis.
  • Project management assistance (with an emphasis on developing new, or promoting existing, trade related initiatives and support for the Assam Haathi Project): assistance with general project administration tasks, including reporting-writing, preparation of grant applications, background research and the coordination of sub-initiatives, as well as participation in project meetings.
  • Writing: assisting with scientific papers, articles, press releases, project reports and any other related writing that as required
  • Travel and field work: several short trips overseas and/or within the UK may be required.


Candidates should have completed a Masters degree in conservation science or a closely related subject, have excellent subject background knowledge of conservation topics. Specific knowledge and/or experience of the issue of species conservation, wildlife trade, or human-wildlife conflict is advantageous. The candidate should have experience from previous employment in conservation. He or she should be able to demonstrate experience of carrying out research, and have excellent English writing skills. The candidate should also be highly organized and have proven skills in researching and summarizing information and drafting scientific reports or papers. Preferred additional skills and experience include: field travel experience, statistics, website maintenance, and knowledge of any other languages.


This is a full-time position (35 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 9am to 5pm), based at Chester Zoo. The salary is £15,907.50 per annum, increasing to £17,675 upon successful completion of the 6 month probationary period based on 2012 pay grade projection. The contract is initially for 11 months, with possible extension dependent on performance, budget and future strategic direction of the zoo’s conservation programmes.

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation breeding programmes, research and education.

We currently have a vacancy for a Giraffe Keeper to join a large and busy section.
The post will involve the daily care and management of a wide variety of species including Giraffe, Okapi, Onager, Camel and Bongo to name a few. The successful candidate will provide excellent animal husbandry, care and welfare for the assigned mammals, ensuring that all enclosures and facilities are maintained to the highest possible standards.

The successful candidate will have the Zoo Animal Management, HND or degree in a Zoological related science. They will have proven experience working with Giraffe, and any other relevant hoof stock species. They will have proven experience of working in a zoo or safari park, and of Operant Conditioning.
They will also hold a full driving licence.

The successful candidate will ideally be competent in the use of computers and basic software packages. They will desirably have proven experience with implementing environmental enrichment and experience of working within strict SWP.

Salary is £14,220 increasing to £15,800 after satisfactory completion of the probationary period.

Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMS), the World Primate Centre, has over 1,000 animals and is the most comprehensive collection of primate species and subspecies in the western world. We have exciting plans for developing the Zoo further, continuing our work in conservation of endangered species and providing the very best environment that we can.

A position has become available for a keeper to work on our Old and New World Section, although there may be opportunities to cross train between various primate sections. Primates on this section include langurs, colobus, guenon, marmosets and woolly monkeys. Hands-on experience with primates and an animal related qualification are essential.

The role is full time, including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly and we provide uniform, 31 days holiday and 5% employer’s pension contribution.

A position has become available for an Elephant Keeper to join our existing team caring for our 4 female Asian Elephants, one of whom is currently pregnant. We have a close contact approach to elephant management.

The successful candidate will have solid experience in hands on management of elephants and an animal related qualification. Applicants must have experience of professional Zoo animal care. A proactive and positive approach together with good communication skills and an overall understanding of the role of the modern zoo is essential.
