Veterinarian Positions at Senda Verde




Senda Verde Animal Refuge is located in the tropical Los Yungas Region of Bolivia. We are seeking either 2 x Full Time Veterinarians or 1 x Full Time Veterinarian and 1 x Full Time Veterinary Nurse. These positions would require working with and rehabilitating animals that have been rescued from Animal Trafficking through out Bolivia.

6 month to 1 year contracts are available with meals and accommodation included on sight. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with an array of Native Bolivian Wildlife and engage in Bolivian culture.

Utah's Hogle Zoo is announcing the immediate opening of a full time animal care position, as a primary keeper, Rocky Shores.

The Rocky Shores exhibit is a new 18 million dollar complex encompassing four acres, with five large exhibits featuring Bears, Seals and Sea Lions and North American River Otter. Multiple underwater viewing locations will be available to the public, with designated encounter locations for guest interactions. It is scheduled to open by June of 2012.

The Zoo is seeking qualified applicants for this keeper position. This is a full time, year-round position and includes responsibility for the care and husbandry of California sea lions, harbor seals, grizzly and polar bears, river otters, bald eagles, and salt water aquaria, as well as other animals or areas as assigned. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a newly constructed facility.

Applicants must be able to work effectively in a positive team environment, equally with guests, staff and volunteers. Excellent communication skills to include writing and public speaking will be necessary in the successful pursuit of this position. At least five years paid experience working with pinnipeds in a zoo or aquarium setting is required. There is a strong expectation of experience in, and support of, operant conditioning and training techniques, enrichment standards, as well as exceptional public speaking skills. Experience in developing pinniped public demonstrations is a plus. Degree in life sciences, biology, zoology or related field preferred. Responsible for the Rocky Shore area animals, including daily husbandry, exhibit maintenance, training, observation and enrichment, including assisting in veterinary practices, multiple high energy educational presentations, public relations and support aspects of Zoo operations. Will also be trained to work in other animal areas of the Zoo, as assigned.

Applicant must be able to work under diverse and variable weather conditions, in close proximity to visitors, be able to lift over 60 pounds without injury, bend, stoop, jump, stretch and generally move quickly to avoid dangerous situations. Excellent driving record required.

Position includes an excellent benefit package, including medical, dental, and retirement plans as well as paid vacation and holiday time. Salary is commensurate with experience. Located in Salt Lake City, Hogle Zoo enjoys four seasons, with world class skiing 30 minutes away. Outdoor activities abound in Utah, from National Parks, hiking, climbing, and river running, to Winter Olympic venues.

You will be responsible for maintaining and developing displays and exhibits, including our Botanical House Gardens, along with promoting public education and awareness in relation to conservation of biodiversity.

In addition to this you will also maintain clean, tidy and safe standards of all plant rooms; tool rooms, laboratories and quarantine facilities.

The successful candidate will be expected to be very personable and able to communicate well with the visitors, including delivering public talks and design and run education sessions.

This is full time post working on a rota’d basis which includes regular weekends and bank holidays.

Experience of supervising staff and the BIAZA approved Sparsholt College ANCMZA/DMZAA would be desirable but an equivalent zoo animal-related qualification could be considered.

The Horniman welcomes over 600,000 visitors to the Museum and Gardens each year. Our mission is to ‘encourage a wider appreciation of the world, its peoples and their cultures, and its environments’ and 2012 is an exciting year for us, as we reopen the Horniman Gardens following a £2m re-development project, funded through the HLF Parks for People programme.

This redevelopment project will unlock the educational potential of the Gardens through new Display Gardens, a Music Garden, a walk-through Animal Walk and a new Education and Community building, ‘The Pavilion’. The Animal Keeper will play a central role in the upkeep of the redesigned and newly interpreted Animal Walk.

As Animal Keeper you will take full responsibility for the animal husbandry and development of the stock in the Animal Walk. You will also help to interpret this living collection for the public through your input into exhibitions and events.

You will have knowledge of current animal husbandry best practice and will have hands on experience of caring for animals in a city farm/wildlife centre/zoo environment. You will possess a suitable qualification in animal care or zoo animal management.

In addition the role will involve interacting with the public in what will be a busy and popular attraction, so we are looking for a candidate with experience of dealing with the public in an informative and enthusiastic manner.

As a member of the Gardens team you will also support the Gardens Manager in overseeing the work of volunteers and apprentices in the Animal Walk and across the Gardens generally.

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation, research and education.

We currently have a vacancy for an Assistant Team Manager to join our busy Aquarium section. The successful candidate will supervise and work alongside keepers to undertake daily animal care duties, focusing on welfare, hygiene and life support. They will ensure that all exhibits are of an excellent standard for both animals and visitors alike, and provide outstanding customer care.

The successful candidate will have considerable experience of working in a zoo/aquarium and have a thorough understanding of the contribution ex situ populations of animals can make to education, science and conservation. They will be expected to have a degree in a relevant biological science (or have accrued an equivalent knowledge base) and understand how scientific method can be used to contribute to both ex situ & in situ conservation. They must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the biology and husbandry of marine & freshwater fish and of aquatic invertebrate and have proven track record in both conservation breeding and exhibitory. Excellent exhibit theming skills are a requirement of this role. The successful candidate will have outstanding observational skills, attention to detail and be committed to ensuring the highest possible standards of animal health and welfare.

Candidates must also demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and should have some management experience as they will be assisting the team manager in all aspects of running the department. They will be competent in the use of Microsoft Office packages – familiarity of ARKs is desirable but appropriate training will be provided if required. Experience in conducting and publishing scientific research and of working in field conservation programmes are also desirable.

Salary is £22,400 per annum pending 2012 pay award.

The Curraghs Wildlife Park is a leisure facility with a highly regarded established animal collection, attracting around 45,000 paying customers every. The previous long term General Manager has recently retired and we are looking for an enterprising and forward thinking replacement, with both the animal husbandry skills and the commercial expertise necessary to take the Park to the next level and increase its visitor income substantially. If you are up to that challenge this could be the job for you. In return we are offering an initial three year contract at a competitive salary in a low tax environment.

The General Manager position is a Isle of Man Civil Service post on the staff of the Department of Community Culture and Leisure. The main purpose of the post is to manage and promote the Curraghs Wildlife Park, Ballaugh as an animal leisure attraction for Isle of Man residents and visitors alike.

The postholder will ensure that the Curraghs Wildlife Park continues to offer an enjoyable and educational wildlife experience of high quality to all and provide clear and effective leadership to staff, volunteers and contractors working within the Park.

The postholder will have proven experience in the zoo industry, in a customer focussed delivery environment, with a strong emphasis on strategic policy and marketing development and be able to demonstrate good communication skills, both oral and written.

Applicants must have a minimum of 5 GCSE’s at grade C or above and hold a professional qualification in a relevant subject eg. animal husbandry, zoology, ecology, veterinary etc.

The applicant must also have a minimum of 3 years experience in a senior management position within a relevant commercial organization eg. zoo, animal leisure attraction or similar leisure facility.

Applicants will require knowledge of wildlife conservation issues and management, both at home and abroad and be able to demonstrate a good practical knowledge of animal husbandry, in captivity and in the wild, and wildlife habitats, particularly wetlands. (Parts of the Curraghs Wildlife Park are designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and the site forms part of the Ballaugh Curragh, an internationally important wetland that has been designated a Ramsar site.)

The postholder will be expected to ensure value for money for both user and taxpayer by increasing income and reducing costs whilst complying with Isle of Man Government Financial Regulations.

The postholder must be available to work additional or unsocial hours when required including weekends and Bank Holidays. A full driving licence and access to own vehicle for work purposes is considered essential.

Munda Wanga Environmental Park Veterinary Doctor

The Veterinary Doctor is required to oversee the development of the veterinary care programme at the Wildlife Sanctuary and to ensure that the welfare of the animals remains highest priority. The veterinary doctor will work closely with the managers, veterinary advisors, animal keepers and veterinary students. The Veterinary doctor is aware of the role that Munda Wanga plays in environmental education in Zambia, in animal welfare and husbandry education and in animal conservation in Zambia.

Overall Aims of doctor

1. Day to day running of the Veterinary Clinic.
2. Prepare veterinary protocol manuals for all animals in quarantine, ready for release or those that are at the Munda Wanga for long term care.
3. Training of all animal keepers and veterinary students from University of Zambia.
4. Oversee diet and feeding regimes for all animals at Munda Wanga.
5. Develop and implement the protocol for all new arrivals, injuries, vaccinations, bottle feeding and other issues that arise.
6. Assist with maintaining animal record database in good standing according to PAZAAB and ISIS standards.
7. Have input into the release of animals back to the wild with regards veterinary procedures.
8. Assist management with improving the management systems at Munda Wanga and ensure that protocols and systems are implemented and targets are achieved.

General Operations

The Veterinary Doctor shall ensure that;

All the animals receive the care and attention they require.
That all animal records be appropriately maintained.
The animal section of the Munda Wanga runs as per the Munda Wanga’s veterinary protocols (once fully developed).
All new arrivals are vaccinated and health screened.
Maintain all animal records, ensuring that all new arrivals receive ‘record sheets’ and that such sheets remain regularly updated. According to PAZAAB and ISIS regulations.All the Munda Wanga’s animals are inspected daily alongside animal keepers.
The daily feeding and cleaning operations alongside animal keepers are overseen.
All sick and injured animals receive the required medication.
All veterinary testing of the Munda Wanga’s animals, e.g. stool and blood are taken when required.
That post mortems are carried out when required to identify causes of death
All animals in long term care are routinely tested and vaccinated as per Munda Wanga veterinary protocol.
Contribute to the ongoing development of the Munda Wanga’s animal welfare protocols, toensure that the Munda Wanga maintains a high standard of animal welfare practice.


Animal Keepers

The Veterinary Doctor shall ensure:

All hand-reared orphans that may arrive at the Munda Wanga are well looked after with regards both their physical and mental health.
Daily records are professionally maintained for any orphan with regards their feeding,behaviour and weight.
All animal keepers are trained to do health checks every morning during their morning round and that they report to the head keeper and veterinary doctor if anything is wrong.Veterinary Clinic The Veterinary Doctor shall ensure that:
The veterinary clinic is operational and can cater for basic operations.
Relations with the University Vet School are maintained and that the students coming for practical training are supervised.

Reporting

The Veterinary Manager shall ensure:

That any serious injuries or illnesses to any animal are reported to management immediately, allowing for adequate and quick follow up.
All veterinary care carried out must be suitably recorded for future use.
That all records and reports are well catalogued and that any monthly reporting to Management is achieved, in a timely manner. That an easy to use database be established to allow easy access to veterinary records.
