Role Profile
ZSL is looking for a Part Time Keeper to join our Hoofstock team to work every Thursday and alternate weekends. The successful candidate will be expected to ensure high standards of animal welfare and animal husbandry are carried out daily. To keep daily checks and records of animals health and behaviours and report to senior members of the team. Good communication skills and experience of dealing with the public is essential, together with the ability to work effectively within a very dedicated and professional team.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assisting as instructed with the cleaning of designated areas.
  • Assisting as instructed with all aspects of animal husbandry on a daily basis.
  • Assisting under instruction with the preparation of approved diets.
  • Assisting under instruction/supervision the carrying out of correct feeding procedures where this is deemed appropriate by the Team Leader
  • Ensuring that safety and emergency procedures are followed at all times.
  • Maintaining courteous and helpful relations with visitors.
  • Reporting defects and repairs required to the Team Leader or more senior staff.
  • Assisting in various projects related to animal management as directed by senior animal management staff.

Person Specification
  • Have great customer service and communication skills as there will be a need to engage and interact with visitors.
  • Practical experience of working with hoofed mammals, preferably animal management of exotic hoofed species.
  • Willingness to work on and learn about evolving husbandry management within zoological collections to include positive re-enforcement training for behavioural management and varied methods of enrichment for a range of species.
  • Be able to demonstrate initiative and a pro-active approach to completing tasks beneficial to the section/department without always waiting to be asked.

Role Profile
An opening has arisen for a Qualified Animal Keeper on our Africa Section at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. Ideally this person will have experience of working with a variety species particularly with primates, including great apes. The Africa Section comprises a range of mammals including white rhino, reticulated giraffe, and chimpanzees, ring tailed lemurs, lions, cheetahs, Grevy's zebras, hippos and a number of antelope species.  Some experience of working with hoof stock or carnivores would also be advantageous. This position will also assist the Team Leader, Deputy Team Leader and other Senior Keepers in all aspects of their work but primarily the care of the animals, ensuring high standards of animal welfare, animal husbandry and keep daily checks and records of animals within the section.



Working hours are 37.5 per week with summer and winter day length variation, worked within a roster which includes regular weekends so flexibility regarding hours is crucial. Applicants must have a passion for working with a variety of animals within a Zoo environment. Good communication skills and experience of dealing with the public is essential, together with the ability to work effectively within a team.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Observing the behaviour, health and security of animals reporting any problems to the senior staff.
  • Assisting with the preparation of approved diets and carrying out the correct feeding procedures.
  • Cleaning and maintaining exhibits and other designated areas.
  • Ensuring that safety and emergency procedures are followed at all times.
  • Ensuring that conditions for animals are suitable and reporting any problems, including defects or repairs required to enclosures, to the senior staff on section and relevant departments required.
  • Assisting with the movement and/or training of animals and/or animal demonstrations
  • Supporting in the training and mentoring of less experienced staff.
  • Maintaining courteous and helpful relations with visitors and media.
  • Supporting broader ZSL lead events such as late evenings and specialist functions.

Person Specification
  • Have a good level of skill and knowledge with a proven work record with a variety of primates including great apes
  • Have strong attention to detail and the ability to clearly convey instruction.
  • Have an understanding of mammal breeding and good familiarity with external zoo associations such as BIAZA and EAZA.
  • Able to use Microsoft software including Outlook, Excel and Word.
  • Have a qualification in a relevant field at university level and/or diploma in the DZMAA Keeper’s course or equivalent work experience.
  • Be reliable and have good time-keeping and attendance record and able to demonstrate leadership and professionalism.
  • Have a full clean driving license is - Essential.

The main role of the flying bird trainer and presenter Keeper (Maternity Cover) position is to manage the day to day operational duties relating to animal husbandry and visitor interaction within the HUB Section specifically flying bird area. This is directed day to day by the section Team Leader or other key senior animal department staff within the section. The successful candidate will also be expected to:

  • Observe the behaviour, health and security of animals and report any problems to the Team Leader or manager including defects or repairs required to enclosures and relevant departments required to support work needed.
  • Assist with the preparation of approved diets and carrying out the correct feeding procedures.

  • Train Birds for public displays.
  • Present Bird demonstrations to the zoo visitors.

  • Practical experience of bird management and training for displays
  • Proven experience with training techniques of a broad range of raptors, experience with the training of exotic birds would also be beneficial
  • Can demonstrate an in-depth understanding of modern avian training practices and diet management of trained birds

1- BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Rabat Zoo is seeking an experienced, energetic, motivated and hardworking General Curator to lead a team of dedicated keepers and manage the animal collection.

Rabat Zoo opened in 2012 after 5 years of renovation. It is now a major destination providing a diversity of wildlife recreation and leisure activities for the whole family. It is designed as 5 African bio-zones composed of various habitats, displaying over 180 species and some 2000 individuals
Rabat Zoo has a mission of Wildlife Recreation, Education, Research and the Conservation of endangered species.

2- OVERALL JOB PURPOSE:
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and the General manager, the General Curator has responsibility for the husbandry, management and display of the animal collection while leading the animal keeper team (30). The position will be a senior member of the leadership team of Rabat Zoo. The key objectives of the position is to drive innovation and excellence in
animal care and develop a sustainable animal collection that supports the Zoo’s strategic goals.

3- POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Contributes and leads the safety of animals, staff and visitors.
Prepares and follows up the membership of the zoo to PAZAA, EAZA, WAZA and other zoological institutions.
Provides leadership to the keeping staff in the daily management of the
animal collection
Develops and reviews all animal care Standard Operating Procedures
including those related to safety.
Works collaboratively with the Animal Health staff on treatment plans and preventive health programs.
Leads, develops and implements the animal care program evaluation and
general animal wellbeing.
Develops and implements all emergency proceedures required.
Oversees the provision of content for the interpretation of new and existing animal exhibits for short and long term needs.
Prepares and has responsibility for the annual budget for the department to be submitted and approved by the administration.
Represents the department on the Zoo’s senior leadership team. Participates in the Duty Officer rotation, including some weekend duty
Participates in, supports and ensures support of key initiatives from other departments including public relations, marketing efforts and guest
experience enhancement.
Develops improved animal management husbandry protocols including the development and implementation of enrichment and feeding calendars.
Provides staff training on animal management and husbandry to improve
captive animal welfare.
Ensures agreed changes are understood by the staff and can be implemented beyond the scope or the program.
Advises on how modifications to existing buildings/enclosures can be made to improve animal welfare.
Support the Zoo’s senior management and stakeholders in the development of a Master Plan for Rabat Zoo.

4- EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILL SET:
Bachelor Degree in biology, veterinary or a related field.
Minimum three years of experience in an EAZA-accredited zoological park or equivalent.
Experience overseeing curatorial or other animal supervisory staff preferred.
Advanced working knowledge of animal welfare, husbandry, handling,
population management and exhibit design.
