Primate Care Team Manager (Full time 37.5 hours pw, permanent)
Salary: £21,587pa, 30 days a/l leave pa, rising over 5 years, opportunities for skills secondment

The Wild Futures Sanctuary currently houses 46 primates consisting of 25 capuchin monkeys (Cebus and Sapajus sp), 15 common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), three Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) and three woolly monkeys (Lagothrix sp). The majority of the residents are victims of the exotic pet trade in the UK.

Primate Care Team Manager

Reporting to: the Director of Wild Futures
Responsible for: Primate Care Team, volunteers and interns.
Please note that reporting lines may change from time to time in line with organisational changes.  As a small team we always anticipate change.


Summary of Role: 
The Primate Care Team Manager is responsible for managing and coordinating the primate care team to ensure and oversee best practise and high welfare standards for the primates in our care.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Key Responsibilities:




                      PRIMARY MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:-
o          Responsible for coordinating monkey care in consultation with experienced staff, team and veterinary practice as appropriate.
o          Valued member of the management team but is also a hands on proactive member of the sanctuary team
o          Able to work around the animals in a respectful and calm manner
o          Must be dedicated and flexible, expected to share “cover” shifts staying on site overnight as the responsible member of staff
o          As a manager, proactively supports other aspects of the charity’s work as required and as directed by the Director
o          Make recommendations as required in respect of the budget and then closely manage the budget as signed off by the Director & Trustees
o          Expert in and maintains knowledge and latest thinking in primate care and welfare and all conservation matters relevant to the sanctuary
o          Compliance with all relevant health and safety protocols and documentation.  Includes, but not limited to emergency procedures, risk assessments and safe working practices. 
o          Demonstrable ability in instructing others and monitor team compliance

          COMMUNICATION:
o          As Care Team Manager ensures regular communication and update of all primate care issues.  Responsible for providing sanctuary wide updates and ensuring relevant personnel are kept informed including the Director
o          Willing and able to give talks to the public when the sanctuary is open to visitors
o          Provides management contribution and reporting as required at Trustee’s meeting and management meetings

          PEOPLE MANAGEMENT:
o          Calm under pressure, leads, manages, mentors, trains and enthuses members of the care team building a supportive and positive culture
o          Ability to positively engage with all team members from a diverse range of backgrounds
o          Organise, track and review carer’s progress including any management interventions such as appraisals, feedback and career development as may be necessary
o          Follows and supports all HR policies & practices
o          Designs and produces rotas to ensure appropriate cover – able to prioritise and multi task
o          Supports recruitment programmes as required

As manager of the Care Team demonstrates leadership where managing people:

                       Is an ambassador for the Wild Futures Vision
          Works as part of an effective management structure
          Contributes meaningfully to both strategy & operations
          Leads and directs with clear management – open and honest style
          Demonstrates positivity despite any personal feeling
          Ability to motivate and persuade individuals to ‘get the job done’

Background & Qualifications:               Essential:
          At least five years’ experience working with primates in an animal sanctuary, rescue centre or similar environment
          Good communication skills, confident and articulate, fluent in English language
          Experience of managing a small team preferably in similar environment
          Physically fit and able to work outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions
          Degree in zoology or related field OR equivalent on-the-job experience in lieu of degree
          Due to the lengthy training process, a commitment of at least two years is expected
          Valid driving licence
          Permission to work in the UK
          Desirable:
          Experience working with capuchins and callitrichids
          Veterinary care knowledge would be highly useful
          Management experience in a ‘live in’ situation would be helpful


Outcomes & Targets Associated with this role:

                      Smooth running Care Team delivering high welfare standards (as specified) to the monkeys in their care. 
          Successful and collaborative working relationship with management team and colleagues which supports the delivery of the charity’s goals, objectives and vision.
