Lakeland Wildlife Oasis

Full-time/permanent position.

Lakeland Wildlife Oasis, owned and operated by the Lakeland Trust for Natural Sciences, is a small BIAZA accredited zoo based in South Cumbria. The park is currently undergoing extensive and exciting developments and is seeking a full-time animal keeper to aid development and maintenance of the zoo’s animal collection. This role will involve daily husbandry and care of the zoo’s diverse living collection, as well as other duties including on-site development and delivery of conservation education.

The successful applicant will have a positive outlook, a strong initiative and keen interest in aiding the zoo towards its charitable aims and objectives. Applicants should be able to communicate well and work in team. Experience with Category 1 species desirable. 

This role entails a 37.5 hour 5-day working week including weekends and bank holidays. Due to location of the site and lack of public transport, a full UK driving license is necessary.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:
  • -         Daily animal husbandry inc. preparation and distribution of food and water, general cleaning, enrichment, training and records.
  • -         Adherence to all living collection policies, procedures, safe working practices and risk assessments.
  • -         Maintenance and development of new and existing enclosures/facilities.
  • -         Public-animal experiences inc. daily keeper talks, keeper for the day experiences, school tours and outreach.
  • -         Training and development of trainee animal keepers, volunteers and work placement students.


Requirements:
  • -         An animal science related qualification and/or DMZAA.
  • -         Full UK Driving License.
  • -         Minimum 1/2 years’ experience animal keeping in a zoological collection.
  • -         Physically fit for the demands of the role.
  • -         Flexible approach to working hours.


-         An understanding and passion for progressive animal management.
