3 or 6-month volunteer placement

A 3 or 6 month volunteer placement at Hanwell zoo is perfect for those looking to develop their animal management skills, get a feel for what it's like to work in an operating zoo and gain the essential experience to become a Zookeeper.

Our small team is perfectly positioned and experienced to demonstrate all aspects of zookeeping within our well-formed and diverse collection. Each day, you will be given hands-on, practical experience in all aspects of zookeeping life, and one afternoon a week will be designated to a one-on-one with a qualified keeper who will give you a comprehensive look into specific areas of the skill, take you through comprehensive principles of zookeeping to complete this short course, and assist you in creating a portfolio.

Hours: 35 hours a week
Time: 08:30 - 16:30
Days: 5 days a week (specific days to be agreed upon with successful applicant)
Place: Hanwell Zoo, Church Road, London, W7 3BP.

The applicant must be:
  • Available 5 days a week for a continuous period of 3 or 6 months, including one weekend day per week.
  • Aged 18 or over
  • Independent, or be accompanied by a carer
  • Proactive and enthusiastic about conservation and animal management.


This six-month volunteer placement will provide comprehensive experience in the following principles:
