Curatorial Assistant in Herpetology
Manchester Museum is
seeking to appoint a part-time Curatorial Assistant in Herpetology to work with
the live amphibian and reptile collection in its Vivarium. We are looking for
an individual who would enjoy supporting the conservation of these wonderful
creatures and be committed to helping us maintain the highest levels of their
daily husbandry.
A caring attitude
towards the animals and dedication to supporting the important contribution the
museum is making to conservation and non-invasive research is essential. The
successful candidate will assist in all areas of animal health and welfare, including
liaising with veterinary staff and industry professionals. Manchester Museum
does not take the keeping of animals in captivity lightly and is dedicated to
ensuring all its specimens are maintained in absolute optimum conditions.
Work typically
involves the daily maintenance, cleanliness and presentation of public
exhibits, service areas and a variety of administrative duties. Other
activities involve supervising visitors and volunteers, as well as helping the
Museum to develop and deliver public programmes - through teaching and
engagement activities.
Applicants should
have meticulous standards and pride themselves on their attention to detail and
observational skills. They must have a passion for maintaining live
herpetological collections and their associated environments correctly.
Ideally, you will have extensive experience of working with a variety of
species (whether professionally or otherwise). It is also essential for the
candidate to be a self-motivated and organized individual with excellent
interpersonal skills and able to work alone when required and off their own
initiative. They should also have good knowledge of this specialist area of
work and have a willingness to learn and adapt to a flexible work pattern as
the role develops.
Ideally, the
successful candidate will also have a degree or Master’s qualification in a
zoological related science, or equivalent experience. They will also have
proficiency in detailed record keeping, competency in the use of computers and
associated software packages, such as ZIMS.
As an equal
opportunities employer, we welcome applications from all suitably qualified
persons. As we are committed to the principles of the Race Equality Charter
Mark, we would particularly welcome applications from the Black, Asian and
Minority Ethnic (BAME) community who are currently under-represented at this
level in this area.
