Deputy Director of Animal Care and Conservation
Sedgwick County Zoo
The purpose is to
provide leadership, vision and support for the Zoo and its core zoological and
conservation activities. This position provides support to the Executive
Director/ CEO and serves in that role in his absence. Oversees Zoological
Programs (Animal Curators, Animal Welfare, Registrar and Veterinary Services);
Conservation Awareness (Education); Conservation Programs (Field Conservation
and In-house Sustainability); as well as special project work under the
direction of the Executive Director/CEO.
Plans and directs
both short and long-range strategies and plans for animal care and management,
education, and conservation.
- Oversees the Zoo’s Conservation Awareness (Education) Department. Provide management and support for the Zoo’s conservation education programs, including but not limited to, outreach, Zoo camps, interpreters, the Zoo pre-school and all other educational programs.
- Oversees the Zoo’s conservation mission, initiatives and goals. Investigates and identifies projects for consideration; oversees financial management of conservation-based programs
- Develops, reviews, and maintains operational policies and procedures within key areas of responsibilities. Ensures policies for animal acquisition/disposition and research based projects are within Zoo and AZA policies and within local, state, federal and international laws and regulations
- Plans, implements and participates in dangerous animal incident procedures and drills. Responsible for making quick decisions that may be a matter of life-and-death for visitors or staff. May be required to immobilize or destroy an animal in the event of a dangerous animal escape or someone in with a dangerous animal
