Salary is national minimum/living wage to £8.82 per hour DOE

plus a living out allowance of £2,600 per annum (pro rata), if on-site accommodation is not required or available.

 

Howletts Wild Animal Park, based in Kent, is seeking a passionate, experienced, hardworking and motivated animal keeper to work with a small team of enthusiastic and likeminded keepers on our carnivore section. Howletts works in conjunction with The Aspinall Foundation, a charity committed to the conservation of rare and endangered animals through breeding and reintroduction programmes.

 

This position offers a fantastic opportunity to work with a wide range of species from honey badgers to Sumatran tigers and contribute to in-situ conservation programmes. Recently we released the first UK cheetah back to the wild.

 

The Role

The successful applicant will be expected to undertake general husbandry duties, livestock dispatch and butchery, basic enclosure furnishing, maintenance tasks, and record keeping. The company is committed to staff training, you will have the opportunity to develop your professional skills and abilities, and to contribute towards plans for the section.

The position is full time, working 40 hours per week, five days a week and will include weekends and bank holidays.

 

The Person

We are looking for someone with experience gained in a similar mainstream zoological collection. Most importantly, you will have excellent standards of husbandry and welfare, a sound knowledge of health and safety practices. You must be confident in engaging with the public, familiar with basic computer software packages and have good verbal communication skills. We are looking for a team player who is also confident to work alone.  Ideally, you will have gained DMZAA or an equivalent qualification, or be prepared to undertake this which the company will support. The role is physically demanding and will involve heavy lifting, so you will need to have a good level of physical fitness. You will also need to be comfortable working at height to perform enclosure maintenance duties.

 

A valid full UK driving licence is essential.
