We are seeking a confident, outgoing, experienced, full time zoo keeper with a minimum of two years experience working for a zoo or in a similar animal environment.
You must possess a good work history and be determined to make zoo keeping your career. An outgoing personality and the ability to communicate effectively with the general public (including undertaking keeper talks) are essential.
You will be working within a team of 14 zoo keeping staff and will report to one of our four Section Leaders on a day to day basis.
A full driving license and car is important and it is advantageous to hold, or be studying for, the City & Guilds Certificate in Animal Management.

Howletts and Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks are sister parks in Kent housing over 1000 animals from a range of species (primarily mammals). We have multiple-groups of many of these species, providing fantastic research opportunities. We are currently undertaking a long term project to provide easily accessible enrichment items to our keepers though enrichment workshops with the public. This is in order to continue to promote animal welfare, and we are working on plans to quantitatively assess this.
We are therefore looking for an enthusiastic graduate student wanting to gain practical experience in zoo welfare and research for a 6 month to 1 year placement working between both parks with responsibilities including:
· Assisting the Education, Enrichment and Research Officer.
· Data collection and analysis with a wide range of species in collaboration with keepers and staff.
· Setting up and running enrichment workshops with the public.
· Assist in the running a volunteer program and creating enrichment items if needed.
· Assist in co-ordinating undergraduate research projects.
· Completing a personal research project including data collection, analysis and write-up.
Benefits include:
· The opportunity to run an extended research project, the results of which could be submitted to a research/enrichment conference. If successful, attendance would be funded up to a cost of £500.
· Gain experience in zoo based research with a wide variety of species.
· Gain experience in the organisation of professional workshops for keepers and students in collaboration with zoo professionals in the fields of enrichment and research.
Desirable skills:
· Full clean driving license.
· BSc in zoology, animal behaviour, psychology or similar qualification.
· Good knowledge of statistics programs such as SPSS.

Chester Zoo, one of Europe’s leading Zoological collections, has an active and award winning Education Division, and is now seeking to extend its educational outreach to schools within its catchments with the appointment of a Safari Ranger. This is a pilot scheme, externally funded, to run initially for one term only commencing 7th September 2009 until the 7th December 2009 and is in response to the government strategy ‘Every Child Matters’ and the three themes of ‘Aiming High’: empowerment, access and quality.
Work includes visiting local schools (including Special Schools) to deliver exciting and engaging workshop sessions that will act as stand-alone units of work or as pre-visit primers in preparation for students’ visits to the zoo. The post-holder will be expected to host zoo visits of any of the schools booking a follow-up session.
The post-holder will be required to work in partnership with teachers to develop units of work that meet curriculum requirements. Our approach to formal education is highly participatory so candidates will be expected to be outgoing and enthusiastic in their teaching style.
Applicants should have a Biology/Life Science degree, a good knowledge of natural history and conservation/environmental issues and a proven ability to communicate with a wide audience. A formal teaching qualification or experience in effective and sensitive communication within the context of working with children with special needs is essential.
The 35 hour week will run Monday to Friday. The rate of pay for this post is £8.90 per hour. Please note that as a charitable trust, our salary scale is not based on LEA scales.
The post-holder will hold a clean driving license and be able to drive themselves to and from schools. A zoo vehicle will be provided. This vehicle is to be left overnight and at weekends in the zoo.

In this varied and highly challenging role, you will have full responsibility of ensuring that all livestock displays are well presented and maintained always working towards providing our visitors with world class displays. You’ll also take responsibility for managing the sanctuary’s seal hospital that rehabilitates rescued seals in the local area as well as look after the resident seals, otters and penguins.
To be successful, you’ll have excellent knowledge of fish husbandry from working within an aquarium and a good knowledge of plant & equipment as you’ll be required to ensure our displays remain of a constant high standard. A relevant qualification in marine biology (or equivalent) is essential and a specialist knowledge of a particular species kept at the centre would be advantageous. Experience of managing medium to large projects is key as we are constantly looking for new ways to refresh and revitalise our attractions. Naturally you’ll have experience of managing a budget, managing a small team, good communication skills and be flexible with working hours to meet the needs of the business. Port Lympne Wild Animal Park, situated in the south of Kent near Folkestone, is an established wild animal park with significant success in the captive breeding of rare and endangered animals. We house three African Elephants, one bull and two cows who form a breeding group and use protected contact methods to which the herd responds well.
Previous animal keeping experience is essential for the role, You must be physically fit as the job is very physically demanding and you must hold a full clean driving licence.
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is motivated and has a proven track record of working well as part of a close-knit team. Good communication skills, a flexible approach to working hours and a genuine enthusiasm for Elephant conservation is important.

Major Job Responsibilities:
Develops and implements full water quality testing, analysis, and control procedures for closed aquatic system with both freshwater and saltwater components.
Works closely with Life Support System Manager and Director of Aquatics to ensure complete coordination of life support system functions.
Monitors levels of various components, including ozone, pH, temperature, salinity, carbon dioxide, phosphates, chlorine, bromine, magnesium, strontium, dissolved organics, calcium, iodine, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, copper sulfate, ORP, alkalinity, and other biological and chemical levels for all exhibit and holding systems.

We have an exciting short term opportunity for a Veterinary nurse who would like a taste of what it is like to work in the Wellington Zoo Hospital. You will need to be a skilled Veterinary Nurse who can work 40 hours per week for five weeks to cover a staff member who is away on leave. Cover will be required from 14 September to 16 October 2009 and you will need to be happy to work weekends.
In the role of Veterinary Nurse you will be responsible for providing veterinary nursing and husbandry care to our collection animals and to injured and sick animals from outside the Zoo. You will be jointly responsible for the maintenance of animal health, quarantine procedures and maintenance of medical records as well as correct storage of pharmaceuticals. An interest or previous experience with exotic and avian patients would be advantageous.

Candidates should be educated to at least level 3 in a relevant vocational subject e.g. Animal Management, Veterinary Nursing, Biological Science or Zoology Degree. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a range of experience working within the animal management industry. Experience of working with livestock or canine grooming, training and agility would be an advantage.

The Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre is one of Yorkshire’s best –loved wildlife destinations. Based on a 4½ acre site on the outskirts of Sheffield, the centre houses a recognisable collection and recently joined BIAZA as a provisional member.
We wish to appoint a Commercial Operations Manager to lead the business through the next phase of development. This is a new and challenging role, resulting from the continuous growth of the attraction and created to integrate animal husbandry, retail, events and catering activities.
Working closely with the owner and senior staff, the position calls for an experienced manager to develop this exciting and progressive visitor attraction. Solid experience in people management will be required, including a sound understanding of H&S and employment law. Experience in visitor management, retail, catering and marketing is important, together with personal qualities of leadership, business acumen, initiative and determination.

The Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre is one of Yorkshire’s best –loved wildlife destinations. Based on a 4½ acre site on the outskirts of Sheffield, the centre houses a recognisable collection and recently joined BIAZA as a provisional member.
We wish to appoint a Commercial Operations Manager to lead the business through the next phase of development. This is a new and challenging role, resulting from the continuous growth of the attraction and created to integrate animal husbandry, retail, events and catering activities.
Working closely with the owner and senior staff, the position calls for an experienced manager to develop this exciting and progressive visitor attraction. Solid experience in people management will be required, including a sound understanding of H&S and employment law. Experience in visitor management, retail, catering and marketing is important, together with personal qualities of leadership, business acumen, initiative and determination.
The ideal candidate will have:
Several years experience in a similar role
Experience in business development including catering, retail and events
Excellent organisational skills
Proven leadership and man-management skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong IT skills
An understanding of the role of BIAZA, zoo licensing and animal husbandry is desirable.
The role will be hands-on and a willingness to actively cover different areas is essential. The position will include weekend and bank holiday working. A negotiable salary in the region of £25-£30k will be available for the right candidate.

Steppe Forward Programme Intern- Mongolia
The Zoological Society of London is looking for an intern to support the Mongolian ‘Steppe Forward Programme’ (SFP) in Ulaanbaatar. The SFP is aimed at tackling conservation issues in Mongolia using a wide range of approaches. These include capacity building, making conservation assessments, producing policy documents, organising and running conservation workshops, and planning and implementing conservation strategies for species such as the wild Bactrian camel and the long-eared jerboa.
The main responsibilities of the successful applicant will include:
- Assisting with the creation of a National Red List for Mongolian birds, including organisation of an assessment workshop and formation of the final product;
- Working with key stakeholders to produce a national species action plan for the Bactrian camel;
- Supporting the ‘Mongolian Wildlife Picture Index’ camera-trapping project;
- Coordinating field-work on Mongolian focal species;
- Attending workshops and networking events and developing contacts and collaborations in Mongolia;
- Launching field-guides of Mongolian Mammals and Birds;
- Writing and developing funding proposals.
The successful candidate will provide evidence of the following essential skills:
A Masters degree in a related subject;
Experience of working overseas;
The ability to work well as part of a team;
Excellent communication skills;
The ability to multitask;
Working with limited supervision to produce work of a high standard;
The ability to use their own initiative in developing projects;
Completing work to deadlines.
The successful candidate will provide evidence of the following desirable skills:
Experience of working in a similar project support role;
Familiarity of conservation issues in Central Asia;
The ability to develop and generate long-term project strategies
The position will be primarily based mainly in the Steppe Forward Programme office at the National University of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar, and free accommodation in a modern apartment in the city will be provided along with a monthly subsistence allowance, return flight from Europe to Ulaanbaatar, visa, and insurance under ZSL’s group travel insurance policy. The internship will last a period of 12 months and is available from July 2009.
