Some 180,000 people visit the Zoo each year. The Zoo conserves precious species and raises awareness of the human contribution to both the destruction and sustainability of ecosystems.
Under the management of the Wellington Zoo Trust, the Zoo is heading in new and exciting directions. The Trust’s vision is for the Zoo to be a magical place of learning and fun, bringing animals in their environments and people who visit together.
We are seeking a permanent full time Keeper responsible for providing excellent husbandry to our animal collection, and a high standard of service to our visitors. This position is within our herbivore team with a strong focus on Australian Marsupials and African species.
The successful applicant will have:
A National Certificate in Captive Wild Animals, equivalent qualification or relevant experience.
Experience in captive animal husbandry and ability to provide a high standard of care.
Proven ability to be a great team player with a can do attitude
Knowledge of behavioural and environmental enrichment techniques.
Proven ability to work with limited supervision and show initiative.
Excellent problem solving skills, and an eye for detail.
General knowledge of natural history, biology and aetiology.
A sound understanding of Zoo philosophy, conservation issues and the role of the modern zoo.
Ability to work on a roster that includes weekends and public holidays.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
