ZSL seeks an intern to assist ZSL’s conservation work focussed on the globally endangered and evolutionarily distinct pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis). This is part of ZSL’s West and North Africa Programme and supports the work of the IUCN SSC pygmy hippo specialist group.
In the past three years ZSL has been leading efforts to raise the profile of this species. In 2008 ZSL’s EDGE of Existence Programme identified the pygmy hippo as a priority species for conservation action (ranked 21st out of all mammals) and ZSL initiated the first camera trap study of the species in the wild in Sapo National Park, Liberia, in collaboration with Fauna and Flora International and Liberia’s Forestry Development Authority. Since then ZSL has sought to build on this work and lay the foundations for a concerted effort to save the species. As a result of this effort a new IUCN SSC Specialist Group was created with a first priority being to produce a Conservation Strategy for the species.
The internship will be focussed on preparing for a regional Conservation Strategy Workshop being held in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire in September 2010 and the compilation of the outputs from this meeting. Specific tasks will include researching and compiling a status review of the pygmy hippo prior to the workshop, assisting with raising funds and making arrangements for the workshop and preparation of the conservation strategy. This will involve research in the library, liaising with international experts and arranging logistics for the workshop. We are therefore seeking a candidate with strong written communication, organisational and interpersonal skills. An interest in West Africa, conservation and strategic planning plus experience in writing status reviews and grant applications would also be advantageous.
Candidates must have an undergraduate and preferably a Masters level degree in biology or a related subject. Fluency in English is essential and French would be an advantage.
The internship is for six months, starting as soon as possible.This is a voluntary position. However, ZSL will reimburse travel costs from within the Greater London area (zones 1-6) and lunches. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience working with leading conservation researchers working in West Africa on a project which will help support the conservation of this species.
