Veterinarian Assistant - California Science Center Foundation

Veterinarian Assistant



The Veterinarian Assistant performs duties to support and document health
care and nutritional requirements of all Living Collection animals.

*Major Job Responsibilities:*

- Assists Veterinarian as required including administering medications
according to established protocols, performing routine diagnostic tests,
maintaining hospital inventory, order and cleanliness, and monitoring the
health and welfare of hospitalized and quarantined animals.
- Acts as a liaison between the veterinarian and animal care staff.
- Assists in developing and documenting diets for all Living Collections
aquatic and terrestrial animals ensuring high quality food with proper
nutritional content.
- Oversight of animal food kitchen including maintaining inventory of
kitchen equipment and food and ensuring cleanliness and sanitation of all
food preparation surfaces and equipment.
- Ensures high quality control on food stock, including maintaining
complete and accurate food storage temperature logs.
- Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies including USDA, FDA,
and AZA with regard to food preparation.
- Trains and supervises Living Collections volunteers assigned to the
food preparation kitchen.
- Performs other duties as needed.

*Qualifications:*

· BA/BS in Biological Science and/or RVT preferred.

· 4+ years experience working in animal care, preferably at an
AZA-accredited facility.

· 1+ years technician experience under the supervision of a
veterinarian preferred.

· Demonstrated knowledge of methods of analysis of nutritional
content of various food items.

· Demonstrated knowledge of USDA, FDA, and AZA standards and
policies with regard to food preparation for captive collections.

· Demonstrated knowledge of microscopic fecal analysis preferred

· Demonstrated proficiency handling animals.

· Demonstrated ability to properly administer animal medications
preferred.

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs. Zootrition® program
experience preferred.

· Rabies vaccination within 3 months of hire required.

· Ability to lift 50 pounds and to operate lift/pallet equipment.

· Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends,
holidays and some evenings.

*Salary:* $17.00 - $20.00 / hour plus excellent benefits
