Vacancies - Zoos South Australia

JOIN TEAM WILD

Would you like to play a critical role in saving some of Australia’s most endangered species?

Due to a restructure we have two positions available:

SENIOR KEEPER: Native Fauna

Zoos South Australia is in an exciting phase of new organisational restructure and conservation vision. A key driver in this structure has been to highlight the important role that native species play in supporting our vision. This position is based at Monarto Zoo, which has a native fauna collection numbering almost 200 specimens (with the majority of them being in intensive off-display breeding and breed/release programmes).

We will soon be focusing on how visitors get to meet some of the many native species held behind the scenes, and the successful applicant will be involved in this process.

Summary of Responsibility

Reporting directly to the Team Leader, this position takes on a leadership role and is expected to provide basic day to day management and direction for the Native Fauna team. This will include developing and supporting your team of keepers as well as overseeing the husbandry of a large and diverse Native Fauna collection. We seek a person who is ready to step into a role that is equally focussed on the management of the animal collection, leading and organising the team and their projects and challenges, and assisting the Team Leader to achieve strategic and operational objectives for both the collection and the team.

Ability and Experience

Sound experience in the husbandry and captive breeding of a variety of native species is required, and experience in the breeding of Tasmanian Devils would be advantageous. Your ability to deliver enthusiastic visitor experiences and present a professional image to the media will also be required to highlight the zoos in situ and ex situ conservation programmes. Also in this position you may be required to participate in field related work, which will require you to have good communication skill and cultural sensitivity’s, and the ability to form and maintain relationships with external parties.

KEEPER: Native Fauna

Reporting to the Senior Keeper of Native Fauna and as a member of the team mentioned above, this position will be focussed on the daily operations and husbandry aspects of the native fauna collection. Proven husbandry experience (preferably with native species), the ability to work well in a team and deliver public presentations are requirements of this position. Some field work in support of our breed and release programmes is likely and some field experience and knowledge of native species biology will be advantageous.

Voluntary Primate Keeper Internship

Wild Futures’ Monkey Sanctuary
Voluntary Primate Keeper Internship

This is a one-year long post, which is unpaid but for which you will be provided with shared accommodation and food. It is an exciting opportunity to develop a wide range of skills, working alongside an experienced team, with the chance to earn a recommendation from a highly respected primate sanctuary. There may be an option to take an NVQ in animal care, dependant on funding. All of which are assets to anyone passionate about pursuing a career in animal welfare and conservation. Selected candidates will be invited to visit the Sanctuary and be formally interviewed for this position and selected according to demonstrated ability to fulfil the following:

Primary responsibilities
You should be aware of and have a commitment to the aims of Wild Futures. You will work primarily with a small group of monkeys. This may be Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) and a patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas) or woolly monkeys (Lagothrix), depending on the needs of the groups at the time. You will be expected to learn to distinguish individual monkeys, their backgrounds and to show a sensitivity to them which indicates your suitability as a keeper. Over the course of the year, you will (under the supervision of experienced staff) become one of the monkeys' primary caregivers; cleaning, maintaining and enriching enclosures and preparing and distributing food and medication, whilst monitoring the health and well-being of the monkeys in your care. You will be responsible for maintaining daily up-to date information on the status and wellbeing of each individual through a computer database.

Other responsibilities
The Sanctuary is open to the public for six months of the year. You will need to learn about the monkeys and the ethos of the Sanctuary sufficiently, so you can talk to and educate visitors and run workshops. You should demonstrate confidence and willingness to do this.

You will also:

Be asked to supervise short-term volunteers on other cleaning routines, making enrichment and other tasks that are essential to the day to day running of the Sanctuary.

Be asked to assist with other work such as territory maintenance, grounds and gardening work, campaigns and computer work, as well as work in the shop, at the desk or in the café (especially during busy times), as the need arises.

Need to share responsibility for certain tasks with members of staff and other interns (such as cleaning the public toilets, cooking for the household and washing house laundry) via a rota system.

Be expected to develop and maintain good communications with all team members and evolve a co-operative living and working relationship with other members of the community. A monthly review process will enable you and the team to monitor your progress and mentor you through your internship.

Show that you can be flexible in your work, adapting to new situations as they arise and you will be able to prioritise work according to tasks you have been given (with monkey care always being the most important).

Be expected to work five full days a week and to be flexible about your days off.

You will have an allowance of thirty days annual leave over the course of your internship. Applicants must be UK or EU residents or have permission to work in the UK.

The next internship post potentially begins in January 2011. Please send a CV and letter of interest before 1st December 2010 to Healthcare/Internship, preferably via email. Please include a SAE if you apply by post.

Volunteer Divers in Marine Protected Areas (Philippines)
 Mar / April 2011

The Project Seahorse Foundation for Marine Conservation (registered Filipino NGO) seeks volunteer, certified SCUBA divers (minimum 15 logged dives) who are interested in participating in a long-term monitoring program for assessing Marine Protected Area (MPA) effectiveness in northern Bohol, Philippines.

The surveys are conducted biannually, one in the dry season (March - April) and one in the wet season (September - October). The Project Seahorse Foundation requires a donation of $2,400 USD to help cover survey costs, local travel, accommodation, and food. Volunteers must also provide their own SCUBA gear and are responsible for the cost of their return airfare to the Philippines, visa costs, travel/health insurance and appropriate vaccinations, together with providing proof of a current dive medical and dive insurance.

A working knowledge of coral reef fish families and benthic fauna (esp. corals) and flora would be an advantage.

Volunteers will be supervised by the Project Seahorse Foundation Survey Biologist and based in Handumon (Jandayan Island). On arrival in Cebu City, the Project Seahorse Foundation National Coordinator will organize a comprehensive orientation on its programs and projects, MPA survey schedule, safety protocols, and community and team living.

To apply and to find out more information please visit the Project Seahorse website for more details: http://seahorse.fisheries.ubc.ca/AboutPS/volunteerPSFDry2011.html
