LIVESTOCK DEPARTMENT – Bird/Animal Keeper

We require an experienced person to assist with the feeding and cleaning of our varied collection of birds and animals. A good knowledge of the management of exotic species is essential. You should preferably have already worked in a similar environment. The successful applicant would also be expected to assist with record keeping and keeper talks. Full training will be given.

This is a full time permanent position working a 5 day week 7.30 am – 5.00 pm with weekend working on a rota basis. Commencing January 2011.

Full driving licence essential. Excellent salary and conditions, including non contributory health scheme, pension scheme and other benefits.

Summary of Role Trainee: Under direct supervision and as part of a team, learn and understand the principles of animal husbandry, exhibit presentation, maintenance and horticulture. Perform core duties to the required standard.

Keeper/ Certified and Experienced Keeper: Under general supervision and within specified guidelines, safely, efficiently and effectively undertake a wide range of tasks which may require the application of relevant experience and training. Develop a broad range of Zoo Keeper skills by working for extended periods in most areas of the animal collection.

JOB SKILLS MEASUREMENT CRITERIA
Administration

Undertake routine administrative tasks and maintain all required records to an acceptable standard.
Ensure you are aware of relevant Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) Policy and Procedure and the Collective Agreement.
Conduct literature searches on species and habitats under care

Interact informally with the public on an ad hoc basis providing directions and information on Zoo activities, exhibits, facilities and animals.
Undertake informal presentations and ‘Keeper Talks', which may involve animal handling, presenting to public groups and responding to questions.
Assist with public relations activities.
Maintain exhibit graphics to required standards.
Undertake media interviews and presentations as required.

Public feedback from interactions, questionnaires, letters submitted, assessment by Supervisors /specialists and ‘mystery shopper’ feedback.

Provide biological samples for testing and analysis.
Participate in the implementation and monitoring of behavioural enrichment and training programmes to affect animal behaviour and allow routine examinations and procedures without distress.

Updates on any changes or concerns raised through Senior Keeper (or others as may be directed, e.g. Animal Health Team)

Maintain exhibit presentation to required standards including pruning of plants, weeding, irrigation and rodent control.
Make minor repairs to exhibit, document and inform supervisor of exhibit maintenance requirements.
Check exhibits daily for faults and perform minor preventative maintenance tasks as required.

Defects recorded and reported through the supervisor
Suggested improvement or amendments reported through the supervisor

Husbandry
Obtain, prepare and provide food to animals in accordance with established diets, feeding schedules and procedures.
Clean food and water vessels, holding areas, exhibits and food preparation and storage areas to required standards, ensure animal areas are maintained free of debris and hazardous materials.
Provide animals with nesting and bedding materials and other items required to meet their behavioural requirements, particularly in relation to breeding or raising offspring.
Observe and report on animal behaviour and changes to the condition of animals.
Maintain diaries and animal records and report matters of interest to the supervisor.
Capture, restrain and handle animals as required.
Maintain and care for live food colonies as required.
Assist in the preparation of animals for transfer.

Responsibilities: Dolphin Cove are offering an exiting and engaging internship for those individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in the marine mammal training field.
This internship experience will provide the opportunity to work very closely with Atlantic Bottle Nosed Dolphins supervised by a professional, experienced trainer. Gaining marine mammal training skills, human care knowledge and first hand experience by assisting with daily husbandry, training sessions, lagoon maintenance and other related duties.

Requirements: Successful candidates should posses a positive attitude, good communication skills, observation and organizational skills and the ability to accept direction, work well with others as part of a team and have an interest and general knowledge in marine life and conservation.
Candidates must commit to a 3-month internship plan, including weekends and bank holidays and must prove they can financially support themselves for an unpaid three-month stay on Grand Cayman.
Dolphin Cove cannot provide accommodation however will advise on available local rentals.
If selected, candidates must also obtain and provide a clean police report and medical insurance coverage.

Enrichment and Research Internship (unpaid)





Howletts and Port Lympne are sister parks in Kent housing over 1000 animals from a range of species (primarily mammals). We have multiple-groups of many of these species, providing fantastic research opportunities. We are currently undertaking a long term project to provide easily accessible enrichment items to our keepers though enrichment workshops with the public. This is in order to continue to promote animal welfare, and we are working on plans to quantitatively assess this.

We are therefore looking for enthusiastic individuals wanting to gain practical experience in zoo welfare and research for a 6month to 1year placement working between both parks with responsibilities including: The placements would be ideal for graduate students but we will also seriously consider applicants from non graduates.

• Assisting the Education, Enrichment and Research Officer.
• Data collection and analysis with a wide range of species in collaboration with keepers and staff.
• Setting up and running enrichment workshops with the public.
• Assist in the running a volunteer program and creating enrichment items if needed.
• Assist in co-ordinating undergraduate research projects.
• Completing a personal research project including data collection, analysis and write-up.

Benefits include:
• The opportunity to run an extended research project, the results of which could be submitted to a research/enrichment conference.
• Gain experience in zoo based research with a wide variety of species.
• Gain experience in the organisation of professional workshops and conferences for keepers and students in collaboration with zoo professionals in the fields of enrichment and research.

Desirable skills:
• Full clean driving license.
• BSc in zoology, animal behaviour, psychology or similar qualification.
• Good knowledge of statistics programs such as SPSS.
• Data collection experience with a number of species.
• Good communication skills.
• A flexible approach to working hours
• Genuine enthusiasm for conservation and captive research is also important.

Highly motivated and experienced animal professionals are required to work with rescued Asiatic Black Bears at our China Bear Rescue Centre in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China.

This position is responsible for overseeing teams of local bear keeping staff involved in the daily care and management of the bears housed within the rescue centre. It will also involve working alongside and liaising with the resident Vet team plus our Animal Conditioning Consultant to manage various daily operations. The Bear Managers will report directly to the centre Senior Bear Manager.


Responsibilities
 Co-coordinating various daily operations:
o Animal care and management
o Maintenance and adjustment of existing enrichment programs
o Bear food and stock ordering system

 Operant conditioning and formal bear training programmes for a variety of medical, behavioural and management requirements

Requirements
 Formal qualification (ideally a university degree) in zoology, biology, conservation, animal behaviour or related field.
 3 to 5 years work experience in a zoo or similar working environment, with proven practical experience is a must.
 Excellent communication, organizational and practical skills.
 Strong management skills and the ability to work in a team or independently.
 Patience and willingness to work within a different culture are essential.
 Right candidates must be able to commit for a minimum of 1 year. 2 year contracts are also offered.

Manager, Veterinarian Science – Wellington Zoo Trust


Wellington Zoo is a treasure, housing significant populations of animals and plants and also employing a team of people who are passionate about conservation, education, research and recreation. Some 180,000 people visit the Zoo each year. The Zoo conserves precious species and raises awareness in the sustainability of ecosystems while promoting a keen interest and appreciation for wildlife.

Under the management of the Wellington Zoo Trust, the Zoo is heading in new and exciting directions. Our dream is to be the best Little Zoo in the World.

We are looking for a passionate and experienced Zoo Veterinarian to manage our new state of the art Veterinary Hospital called The Nest – Te Kohanga (opened December 2009). The Nest – Te Kohanga is an unparalleled facility in New Zealand for providing care to Zoo animals, rehabilitation of native species including marine mammals and birds, and a research facility.

We are looking for a full time Manager, Veterinarian Science who will take responsibility for the day to day running of the Veterinary Hospital including managing the visitor experience and educating staff, Vet students and Massey University Wildlife Residents.

The successful candidate will:

• be a great communicator and confident engaging with Zoo visitors about the work of a Zoo Vet,
• supervise and teach the veterinary staff in their veterinary care of the collection animals and rehabilitation cases.
• maximise the use of veterinary for research projects
• be able to maximise development opportunities for Veterinary Services,
• conduct ongoing strategic planning with regards to Veterinary Services,
• be confident providing support to Zoo Keepers with respect to animal husbandry,
• develop strategic partnerships for improved outcomes,
• be confident in avian surgery and rehabilitation,
• have experience providing veterinary care to birds, primates, non-primate mammals, marsupials and reptiles,
• be capable of lecturing and supervising veterinary students including postgraduate students, and
• be familiar with enclosure design and MedARKS.
