Zoo Education Officer (part-time)


We are looking for a confident, enthusiastic and motivated Education Officer, specialising in Primary education but able to work flexibly throughout all the age ranges. This is a part-time post 25 hours per week.

Education Officers develop, plan and deliver a wide range of educational activities and programmes for students and our general visitors, both within the Zoo and as outreach.

Applicants should possess a relevant Degree and have worked as a teacher or in a similar role as an environmental educator. They should have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Required:


Professional Qualification: Relevant teaching experience. Teaching qualification preferable.


University: Degree


Experience: At least 2 years as a teacher in schools or in a similar role as an environmental educator. Driving licence desirable.


On the job training: A pathway of continuous professional development will be agreed and regularly reviewed. Study for this may entail work outside normal working hours.



Supervision of staff: No direct line-management responsibilities. However, Education Officers work as part of a team and, as such, take responsiblilty for specific projects. In this respect, they manage colleagues and may also be asked to directly supervise relevant staff and volunteers.



Scope of Role:

Selection, preparation and delivery of appropriate teaching materials relevant to the National Curriculum for a wide age and ability range, including special educational needs.
Development, modification and use of teaching programmes.
Health & Safety consideration in respect of students under job holder’s responsibility.
Planning, preparation and delivery of out of school hours activities e.g. Summer School.
Participating in the preparation and delivery of visitor activities, including events and campaigns.
Representing the Zoo at conference and events, and when giving presentations to outreach groups.


Zoo Education Officer

Duties:

To motivate people of all ages to respect and care for our environment.
To plan, prepare and update educational materials relevant to all Key Stages of the National Curriculum.
To teach children of all Key Stages using the facilities within the Zoo and to occasionally work outside this age range.
To respond to changes in Primary School learners’ needs consequent to curriculum and technological changes and to advise Education Department staff on these.
To provide appropriate activities for children and adults with special educational needs.
To give informative talks to other interest groups, both within the Zoo and at other venues.
To plan, organise and deliver activities for clubs, Summer Schools and other out of school activities.
To promote the educational role of the Zoo and pro-actively build relationships with primary schools across Devon and surrounding areas, to encourage use of the Zoo’s education programme.
To liaise and communicate effectively within the Education Department as well as with staff in other Zoo departments, involving attendance at interdepartmental meetings.
To assist with Zoo events and campaigns.
To write information and promotional materials produced by the Education Department.
To check and proof-read text, as required.
To coordinate work experience placements, liaising with other Zoo departments.
To co-ordinate and/or evaluate specific projects, as required.
To respond to requests for information from students and other individuals.
To share ideas with other zoo educators by attending and presenting at meetings and conferences, both locally and nationally.
To assist in promoting the work of the Zoo both within the Zoo and elsewhere, as required.
To be prepared to work hours as appropriate in order to accommodate the needs of the Department, including some evening and weekend work for which time is taken in lieu.
To fully participate in weekly Education Team meetings.
To assist in the general duties involved in the running of the Education Department.
To carry out any other duties that may be required.
