GENERAL CURATOR
The Buffalo Zoo is seeking a General Curator to oversee the
care, management and exhibition of approximately 1200 animals, the supervision
of 30 animal care staff, and completion of the Zoo’s master plan including
construction of a new Arctic exhibit and African savannah exhibit.
The Buffalo Zoo is managed by the Zoological Society of
Buffalo, a private non-profit organization, which has invested $36 million in
new animal exhibits and facilities over the past twelve years. The Zoo is
located just north of the City in historic Delaware Park. With affordable,
attractive neighborhoods, world class museums, and a thriving arts community,
Buffalo offers an amazing quality of life. The General Curator position offers

Essential Functions:
Oversee the health and welfare of the Zoo’s animal
collection including acquisition, disposition, collection planning, husbandry,
enrichment, implementation of balanced and nutritious diets and coordination of
medical treatments with veterinary staff.
Oversee all Animal Department staff including hiring,
training, work scheduling, time-off scheduling, performance evaluation,
disciplinary procedures, counseling, and providing on-going opportunity for
professional development.
Oversee the development, organization, and function of the
Zoo technical library.
Train Zoo staff on all emergency protocols. Schedule safety
drills, and lead Emergency Response Team.
Maintain inventory of emergency and
personal protective equipment.
Manage aquatic life support systems. Maintain operational
parameters, troubleshoot problems, develop and implement corrective actions,
and provide routine maintenance.
Coordinate interdepartmental projects or needs with
Maintenance, Public Relations, Development, Education, and Veterinary
departments.
Direct the development and implementation of administrative
systems for animal record keeping, inventory management, and annual reporting.
Oversee Zoo wide pest control program. Maintain records and
coordinate with contract Certified Pest Control Operator.
Oversee the inventory, storage, and dispensing protocol for
antivenin.
Assist with design of new and renovated exhibits and holding
areas in accordance with USDA requirements and AZA husbandry Guidelines.
Prepare an annual department budget and monitor animal
expenses. Approve all Animal Department purchases, prepare purchasing and
receiving paperwork. Acquire bids, recommend contracts, and interface with
vendors.
Account for, verify and approve hours worked by all Animal
Department staff for biweekly payroll.
Represent the department at senior staff meetings, animal
management meetings, animal welfare committee meetings, Board of Directors
meetings and other in-house and external functions including professional
association meetings.
Keep abreast of current field informational resources and
implement change where beneficial to departmental goals.
Develop and monitor internship programs with colleges and
universities.
Serve as the Chair of the Research and Conservation
Committee including evaluation and support of research by staff and outside
investigators.
Oversee distribution of Cars for Conservation funds to ex-situ
conservation projects. Summarize research and conservation activities in yearly
report.
Serve as the Institutional Liaison for AZA conservation
programs, TAGs, etc.
Qualifications:
Education (Minimum needed):
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Zoology, Wildlife Management,
or an animal science field related to the care and management of a zoological
park animal collection.
Experience (Minimum needed):
Five years supervisory experience in an accredited AZA
institution (preferably an upper management position)
Diversified experience and demonstrated knowledge of
husbandry and management of an exotic animal collection.
Special skills:
Working knowledge of personal computers and software
applications preferred
Experience with physical restraint equipment and techniques,
vehicles and related maintenance equipment.
Familiarity with design and operation of freshwater and
salt-water aquatic life support systems.
Familiarity with the equipment and operation of plumbing,
electrical, HVAC, and refrigeration systems.
Familiarity with environmental control software and
operational parameters (Metasys)
Other:
Curator must be on 24-hour call. May be required to work
evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Must have or be willing to obtain a NYS driver’s license and
maintain a good driving record.
