European Association of Zoos and Aquaria

EAZA, the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, represents and links more than 345 zoos, aquariums, national federations and other organisations in 41 countries. In addition to furthering the professional standards of our members with regard to the care and accommodation of the animals kept in their collections, EAZA also facilitates cooperation in our key mission areas of conservation, education and research. More than 140 million
people visit EAZA members each year.

With a large membership encompassing municipal zoos, charitable foundations, family-owned collections and commercial operations, EAZA is probably the most complex and certainly the biggest professional zoo and aquarium association worldwide. The work of the association is carried out on a voluntary basis by the members, through the many committees and working groups that work to agreed strategies and action plans.

The EAZA Executive Office (EEO) is based at Artis Zoo, Amsterdam, with a staff of 14 people, plus two others located off-site. The office is responsible for the day to day running of the association with activities divided across two departments: Communications and Membership and Collection Coordination and Conservation. The EAZA Academy was founded in 2011 and supports the training activities of the association. The EAZA Academy sits within the Communications and Membership department


Job Description

The EAZA Academy Manager is responsible for successful development and delivery of continuous professional development training which caters, primarily, to the institutional
membership of EAZA. Training opportunities and courses will aim to build capacity and increase professional standards across a variety of subject areas including: new techniques in animal management and husbandry, biological and social sciences research, conservation planning, and conservation education.

The successful candidate will also oversee aspects of financial planning and fundraising for the EAZA Academy. S/he has line management responsibility for the EAZA Academy Animal
Welfare Training Officer. The EAZA Academy manager reports to the Communications and Membership Manager of EAZA.

Duties and Responsibilities

EAZA Academy
• Organise and oversee the already established training opportunities offered by the EAZA Academy;
• Develop new training opportunities as appropriate for the EAZA membership;
• Explore potential partnerships with organisations offering related services;
• Deliver strategic actions related to the EAZA Academy in line with the EAZA Strategy and any related actions suggested by EAZA Committees ;
• Liaise with EAZA colleagues in the Executive Office and across the EAZA community to develop content for the courses and course materials;
• Liaise with institutional members in relation to hosting of courses at diverse sites around Europe;
• Oversee financial budgeting and reporting, including post-course evaluation, for the EAZA Academy;
• Generate additional income to the Academy via fundraising;
• Line management of the EAZA Academy Animal Welfare Training Officer;
• Develop marketing materials for the EAZA Academy in conjunction with the Communications and Membership Manager.
General
• Provide liaison to the EAZA Education and Exhibit Design Committee, to include, but not limited to, organising meetings, preparing documents (e.g. agenda, minutes etc.), assisting with the implementation of the strategic aims of the committee,
assisting with the organisation of the biennial EAZA European Zoo Educators (EZE) Conference;
• Where relevant, assist with preparation related to conferences and other general tasks in the office;
• Contribute to ensure the communication of related information to the membership (e.g. by publication in eNews, Zooquaria, EAZA website, etc.);
• Assist in membership accreditation screenings.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education
• The successful candidate will be educated to at least degree level or equivalent (Level 6 of the European Qualifications Framework). A qualification in the area of education/training management or related areas is preferred but not essential.

Experience
• Candidates must have a minimum of five years work experience, preferably in an animal management or education related field;
• Candidates must have a proven track record in project management and working in a multidisciplinary team environment;
• A proven ability in public speaking is essential;
• Experience in training management/administration will be a distinct advantage;
• Experience in fundraising (grants/corporate donations), while not essential, would be preferred;
• Experience with standard office word processing and spreadsheet packages is essential; some experience of updating websites is preferred.

Skills
• The ability to work effectively to deadlines and under pressure is paramount;
• Excellent project management skills;
• Fluent written and spoken English is essential. The ability to communicate in another European language is preferred ;
• The ability to think strategically and creatively;
• The ability to initiate new ideas and take the initiative in response to challenges and opportunities;
• Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work across multiple cultures.

The successful candidate must legally be able to work in the Netherlands

Employment Conditions
The position of EAZA Academy Manager is a full-time post working five days a week (38 hours) based at the EAZA Executive Office in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The successful candidate will be expected to work weekends and outside normal working hours where required, for example at conferences. There is a holiday allowance of 25 days a year and a company pension is available. An initial one year contract is offered with a probation period
of one month. A permanent contract would follow after a positive appraisal. The salary offered will be in the range of €35,000-€37,000
