Situated near Lympne, Hythe in Kent, Port Lympne Reserve works in conjunction with The Aspinall Foundation; a charity committed to conservation and the reintroduction of captive bred species back into their natural habitats.

We have exciting training placements available for enthusiastic individuals wanting to gain valuable zoo animal keeping experience through working alongside keepers who will provide coaching and mentoring throughout the internship. The successful candidates will benefit from our structured training programme and on-job experience. Our practical training provides significant insight into the functioning of a successful and responsible zoological collection, the aim being to promote your future employability.

We are looking for candidates who are willing to commit to a 6-12 month term and be willing and available to come in from 8am to 5pm, up to or ideally 5 days per week, which may include weekends.

These placements are physically demanding positions so candidates must be physically fit, self motivated and have a genuine interest in conservation and zoo animal care. A valid driving licence is required.

As we are a Registered Charity, funded entirely by visitor fees and donations, we regret we are unable to offer any wages or salary for the placement.  We will provide a full uniform and discount at the parks food outlets for the days that you attend work. No other financial benefits are offered.   Candidates will need to have the ability to financially support themselves for the entire length of the internship. Please be aware that unfortunately we are unable to offer accommodation.

Bristol Zoological Society has a vacancy for a Senior Keeper on its mammal section at the Bristol Zoo Gardens site in Clifton, Bristol.  This is a hands-on position with the post holder assisting in the management and husbandry of the Zoo’s mammal collection as well as the supervision of the staff involved with their care.
The position is permanent working 80 hours per fortnight as part of the departmental 14 day rota, which includes weekends and bank holidays.
The successful applicant will be an experienced zoo mammal keeper and will have at least three years’ experience of working with zoo animals, particularly primates and large mammals. Great ape experience would be an advantage.
The successful applicant will be educated to at least GCSE level, including English and a biological science, and hold the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals – DMZAA, or equivalent. The ability to work within a team and having a general knowledge of the conservation and educational roles of zoos is also required.

(GRACE) Center, Inc.

GRACE, a U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, seeks a highly motivated and team oriented individual to act as the on-site manager for animal programs at its facility in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. GRACE is the only place in the world that
provides sanctuary for orphaned Grauer’s gorillas with the ultimate goal of rehabilitating and reintroducing them back into the wild. Fourteen gorillas live at GRACE in a single social group; several monkeys are also in residence. GRACE is located in a very
remote, mountainous region near the Tayna Nature Reserve; expatriates are uncommon in the area.

Position Description: 

The Manager of Animal & Veterinary Care will be responsible for supervising the implementation of standard operating procedures for all animal care at GRACE in coordination with the GRACE Veterinary and Animal Care & Welfare Advisory Groups and GRACE Directors. 
The Manager’s duties will include working with a team of
Congolese on a daily basis to care for resident animals and monitor and document animal health. The Manager will be responsible for carrying out monthly parasite screenings and any needed medical interventions. He/she will also organize annual
health exams in coordination with veterinary advisors. 

For this position, we are looking for someone who is a team player with demonstrated skills and experience--preferably in a field setting--with procedures including parasitology screenings, darting and anesthesia recovery, necropsies, emergency medicine, and processing and interpreting blood work. The Manager will work closely with and train Congolese staff, so teaching experience is highly desirable. 

The Manager may also have some administrative duties,
and there may be opportunities to work with the local community on veterinary outreach projects.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:
• A degree in veterinary science (veterinarian or veterinary technician) with excellent clinical skills and experience managing captive animal care and welfare
• 5 or more years experience working with primates, preferably gorillas in a zoo or sanctuary setting
• Fluency in or advanced knowledge of French and/or Kiswahili; fluency in English 
• Proven ability to live in remote locations with very basic living conditions
• Proven communication and leadership skills
• Enthusiasm for teaching and working with others, particularly with people from different cultures

Salary/funding:

Salary commensurate with experience; support will also include all travel and living expenses

Uganda Conservation Foundation (UCF), a Registered UK Charity, seeks a General Business Manager to lead its Ugandan not-for-profit operational arm, Uganda Conservation (U) Ltd (UCU). The position will be based in Kampala, Uganda with a minimum term commitment of 3 years (subject to satisfactory performance) sought.

UCF has earned its reputation as a practical, action-based organisation, and seeks to ensure it maximises funds reaching field project actions and minimises administration and non-value adding activities. UCF works to better protect Uganda's National Parks and their unique biodiversity for the benefit of wildlife, local communities, the global community and future generations. UCF works closely with Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to identify specific needs for step changes, designing targeted projects, identifying funding gaps and raising funds to address these needs. Its work is highly valued by its main beneficiaries – local communities and UWA.

UCU has a small team of three employees, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, which in turn report back to the volunteer Board of Trustees of UCF in the UK. The Boards comprise a mix of people from the private and public sectors, and from key relevant disciplines. The Ugandan nationals' team currently comprises a Project Manager, Finance and Administration Officer and a Marketing Officer.

With the current global spotlight and increasing government interest in the Illegal Wildlife Trade around the world, we are stepping up to the challenge in Uganda.

UCU's Goal &Primary Objectives

UCU's goal is to 'secure wildlife populations in Uganda through habitat management and community development'. It achieves this by:

  • Recovering and reconnecting neglected Protected Areas in Uganda;
  • Supporting the recovery of wildlife populations, especially mega-herbivores;
  • Mitigating human - wildlife conflict;
  • Improving livelihoods of communities close to Protected Areas; and
  • Advocacy and building an international and national community of supporters of wildlife conservation in Uganda.

General Description

UCF Trustees / UCU Directors are looking for an experienced manager who can demonstrate strong leadership, with an established record of achievement in growing a sustainable commercial business or not-for- profit organisation, and a keen interest to get actively involved, or re-involved in conservation in Uganda.

The GM will lead UCU's transition from a Founder-led organisation that depends heavily on voluntary time for fund raising and management, to a self-sustaining and managed institution, with the Trustees and Directors playing an advisory and regulatory role.

Working together with Directors, Trustees and staff, the GM will lead the development of new programmes, support the development and management of existing programmes with their respective project leads, strengthen governance, and supervise and develop the staff team.

Through strategic fund-raising, the GM will help UCU to triple UCF's current revenue base to about $500,000 per annum and unrestricted funding to over $120,000 per annum over the next 3 years. The GM will have the opportunity to develop our experienced team working in the field of wildlife conservation and regional development, and further counter the upsurge in poaching and improve livelihoods of communities, in particular by addressing human-wildlife conflict.

Salary and benefits are dependent upon the skills and experience of the successful applicant, with a market-competitive package awaiting the right individual.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership to the organisation;
  • Assist the review and updating of UCU Strategy, working with the Trustees and Directors to develop annual and medium term business plans;
  • Management of project and organisation finances including on-going upgrade of UCU's financial management systems;
  • Ensure the organisation is legally and fiscally compliant and that management systems and policies are in place and used, for smooth running of the office;
  • Day to day staff management including development, training, appraisals and continuity;
  • Programme and resource planning with project leads and stakeholders to guide project work throughout the year effectively and according to capacity;
  • Prepare annual core operational budgets, monitoring and reporting variations;
  • Design, fund and manage new projects with new funding partners;
  • Implement unrestricted funding, new and existing project fund-raising plan in conjunction with stakeholders and project directors;
  • Manage grant funded project cycle, proposal development, project budgets, identify donors and prepare funding applications, work contracts, management of resources, completion of projects to time and budget; donor reporting requirements;
  • Information management between staff, Board of Directors and Trustees, including ensuring Trustees and Directors are provided with accurate and timely information to support their work;
  • Plan and implement fundraising to ensure sustainable long term coverage of core running costs for the continuity and solvency of the organisation;
  • Oversee the team in their preparation of an Annual Report summarising progress on short and long-term plans and oversee a timely annual audit;
  • Ensure communication and marketing is of high quality and effectively targeted, and lead domestic revenue raising initiatives;
  • Liaise with key stakeholders (e.g. Uganda Wildlife Authority and donors) to maintain strong working links at senior levels whilst respecting existing relationships;
  • Identify opportunities for organisational development, including private and public sector partnerships and generation of domestic revenue; and
  • Support the representation of the organisation and its public relations.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications:

Required

  • At least 5 years' experience in a senior management role;
  • Educated to at least graduate level;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, mentor and manage a team of staff to deliver organisation goals;
  • Ability to build effective and motivated working relationships and strategic partnerships both internally and externally;
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
  • Be self-motivated, impact driven, practical, tolerant and flexible to seek innovative, creative and balanced solutions;
  • Strong skills in financial management, planning and budgetary control;
  • Ability and initiative to create and develop fund-raising opportunities;
  • Experienced in proposal development, monitoring, reporting and evaluation; and
  • Proficiency with office computer equipment, Office software, Quickbooks, internet and social media.

Desired

  • Experience of working in East Africa with multi-cultural teams;
  • A strong interest in, or experience of, wildlife conservation;
  • Non-profit/charitable organisation experience including fund-raising; and
  • Working knowledge of QuickBooks accounting.

Currently we are seeking 2 self-motivated, enthusiastic and confident people to help undertake our educational commitments. These full-time temporary positions, are 40 hours a week including all weekends and public holidays from March-September 2015. One post will be based at Howletts and one at Port Lympne.

Duties of the role include presenting scheduled educational talks to our visitors, writing and presenting educational talks to school and bespoke groups, to man the education centre, to provide guided tours with small groups, to run our Junior Ranger and Keeper Academy sessions on weekends and to create relevant education activities linked to our themed events.

A good knowledge of exotic wildlife and global animal conservation issues is a prerequisite. An ability to communicate this knowledge to both the general public and more informed audiences is essential.The ideal candidate will have previous experience of teaching or working in an educator’s role, as experience in presenting talks to the public is needed. You will be working alongside a full time permanent Education Officer and helping to supervise a small team of volunteers.

We are looking for proactive, organised self-motivated people with good proven people skills who is a confident and accomplished public speaker. At interview this must be demonstrated through a prepared talk. One role will be based at Howletts and one at Port Lympne but the successful candidates may be required to work at either park as required. Therefore, your own transport is required.

  • Be able to communicate on a one-to-one basis as well as leading public talks to large crowds.
  • Have some experience working with exotic species.
  • Be comfortable working with carnivore feed preparation.
  • Have relevant animal husbandry qualifications.

The Role Involves:

  • Day to day husbandry of animals in our park.
  • Giving talks to visitors about some of the species in the park.
  • Strict adherence to safe working practices.
  • Maintaining high standards around the park including emptying bins, weeding and window cleaning.

The Oklahoma City Zoo is seeking a highly team oriented individual to join our marine mammal team. The Oklahoma City region enjoys a robust economy, a low cost of living, is centered among a biologically rich area, and hosts a variety of academic and educational institutions.



The successful candidate must possess exceptional interpersonal skills and be comfortable working in a fast paced environment that propels an innovative and educational pinniped program facilitating the zoo’s mission. Responsibilities will include implementing all husbandry, operant conditioning, enrichment, and exhibit cleaning protocols and participating in veterinary procedures, formal and informal guest interactions, and educational talks.



The Noble Aquatic Center is a facility consisting of over 400,000 gallons dedicated to 0.1 Pacific harbor seal plus a diverse group of 3.2 California sea lions, of which, one male is geriatric and visually impaired while the remaining are in an active breeding group. The Noble Aquatic Center also incorporates a 1,800 seat marine mammal stadium and a diverse collection of more than 120 species of fish and aquatic invertebrate species in both freshwater and saltwater.



Candidates must have a minimum experience equivalent to one year full time animal care/animal husbandry including public animal demonstrations, demonstrated knowledge and experience using operant conditioning and training techniques, basic knowledge of life support components, and marine mammal water quality parameters. Candidates must be SCUBA certified or willing to become certified within 6 months of hire. High school diploma is required with preference given to a Bachelor's degree in Zoology, Animal Husbandry, Animal Science, or closely related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. This is a full-time position and selected candidate must have the ability to lift 50 pounds. Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Oklahoma motor vehicle operator's license and pass a Driver's History check to operate Zoo vehicles. Must successfully complete a pre-employment background check, a physical examination, and a drug test and have the ability to pass annual TB tests. The salary is $12.29/hr minimum to $14.75/hr mid-range with excellent benefits.

Blue Planet Aquarium seeks Quarantine Aquarist
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced pro active individual to join us as a Quarantine aquarist.

About You
A degree or equivalent in a relevant biological science is advantageous, as is previous relevant experience in the visitor attractions sector. Practical experience of working with marine and freshwater fish and invertebrates, plus knowledge of aquarium life support systems are essential. Excellent IT skills and attention to detail are also required.

About the Role
You will have responsibility for our off show area and quarantine facility which serves our seven public aquariums across the UK plus involvement with our central 3.7 million litres shark exhibit. Special access all area tours are an optional guest experience and you will be responsible for ensuring a memorable occasion.

The role will include collation of records to Zoo Licensing standards along with assisting in the operation of the Aquarium’s other displays.

This post is full time, with weekend shifts allocated on a rota basis.
