ASSISTANT CURATOR OF LOWER VERTEBRATES AND INVERTEBRATES

 

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its’ mission in conservation breeding programmes, research and education.

With the new ‘Islands’ site under construction, due to open in the spring, 2015 is set to be an exciting year!  This unique and innovative project will provide an immersive experience; showcasing the animals of South-east Asia and working towards a better understanding of the vital conservation work being undertaken in this region. 

We are currently recruiting for an Assistant Curator of Lower Vertebrates and Invertebrates. For the right candidate, this post offers a fantastic opportunity to work with a wide variety of species ranging from Reptiles, Amphibians, Fish to Invertebrates.  The post will involve assisting the Curator in the daily management of the three sections, acting as a deputy to ensure the highest standards of animal husbandry, welfare and exhibitory. Specific areas of responsibility will include overseeing budgets, coordinating exhibit development and coordinating training, collection planning, enrichment and welfare audits for the department.

The successful candidate will have expert knowledge of the taxonomy, biology and key conservation issues relating to these taxonomic groups. Excellent communication skills are required, both verbal and written. Experience in husbandry and design and managing animal exhibits within a themed environment are essential, along with experience of working on in situ conservation projects. Candidates will have a higher education qualification in a Zoological related science (min degree) or equivalent experience. The post may also require you to work in the zoo’s public displays and quarantine or supporting off show breeding areas.

This role will involve representing Chester Zoo at media interviews, internal and external meetings, workshops and conferences in the UK and overseas. Leadership skills and the ability to build strong working relationships across teams will be required. Excellent project management skills, the ability to prioritise and time management skills are essential.

Applicants should hold a full driving licence and be prepared to work weekends and Bank Holidays in a roster system, participating in the Duty Curator rota.

Salary is £34,019 per annum for a 40 hour working week.
