Animal Keeper – Small Carnivores

Port Lympne Reserve, based in Kent is seeking a passionate, experienced, hardworking and dedicated animal keeper to work with a small team of enthusiastic and likeminded keepers on our small carnivore section. Port Lympne works in conjunction with The Aspinall Foundation; a charity committed to the conservation of rare and endangered animals through breeding and reintroduction programmes.

Our small carnivore collection currently houses 13 different species which include Red Pandas; Fishing Cats; South American Bush Dogs; Fossa and Margay and plans are in place to expand our species collection in the near future.

The Role
The position is full time, working five days a week out of seven. The successful applicant will undertake general husbandry duties such as enclosure cleaning and feed preparation as well as contributing ideas for enclosure design and animal enrichment, conducting basic enclosure building and maintenance tasks and record keeping. As conservation education plays a big role at Port Lympne you will also be expected to present talks to groups of visitors.

The Person
Ideally we are looking for someone with pervious animal husbandry experience gained in a similar main stream zoological collection preferably working with small carnivores. Most importantly you will need to possess a passionate interest in small carnivores in particular small felids. You must be confident engaging with the public and have good verbal communication skills. You will be a team player who is also confident to work by yourself.  You will have gained, or be prepared to undertake, an animal management qualification or similar. The role is physically demanding so you will need to have a good level of physical fitness. You will need to be comfortable working at height in order to perform enclosure maintenance duties. A valid full driving licence is essential.
