SENIOR WILD ANIMAL KEEPER/AQUARIST

Wildlife Conservation Society/New York Aquarium


The WCS-New York Aquarium is seeking a senior wild animal keeper/aquarist to work with elasmobranchs, sea turtles, marine fishes and invertebrates in an upcoming state-of-the-art multispecies exhibit.

This position reports to Animal Department Supervisors and/or the General Curator.
Qualified applicants must have two academic years of full time study in aquarium husbandry, marine biology, or ichthyology, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. A bachelor's degree in the marine sciences or a related field is preferred.
A minimum of three years paid experience in a reputable public display institution is required. The applicant must have experience in aquarium husbandry, elasmobranch training techniques, life support systems operations, water quality management, disease recognition and aquatic & marine animal collecting and transport techniques.
They must be SCUBA certified from a recognized international certifying agency. Must possess open water and aquarium exhibit dive experience. The applicant must be willing to conduct dive operations in aquarium exhibits that contain multiple species of sharks, rays, skates and other marine fish.

Applicants will work regularly with other senior & junior keepers, animal health staff, volunteers and interns. They must possess leadership and organizational skills, be detail-oriented and a self-starter, and be able to work independently, as well as part of a team.
Periodically the person in this position will be required to interact with aquarium visitors, special guests, WCS public relations staff and WCS upper management.

Applicants must be able to work Saturdays, Sundays, and all holidays. The Wildlife Conservation Society is an equal opportunity employer.
