Senior Animal Keeper

Senior Animal Keeper – African Experience Section

The Aspinall Foundation is a registered charity that is actively involved with several projects incorporating a diverse range of conservation activities both at their Kent based Howletts and Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks and overseas projects.

We have an opportunity for an experienced, hardworking and dedicated keeper to work with a small team of enthusiastic and like minded keepers on our African Experience Section. Our collection of African animals includes giraffe, rhino, zebra, various antelope and wildebeest.

This is a very physical role and the successful applicant will be expected to undertake all duties on the section from food preparation and cleaning, to enclosure building and maintenance. Conservation education plays a big role in the park so there will be plenty of opportunities for doing talks and displays to the public.

You must have significant experience in animal keeping at senior keeper level gained in a zoo park or equivalent environment with extensive experience working with giraffe and hoofstock animals is essential. A full valid driving licence and experience in driving tractors is also required.

We are looking for an individual who is hardworking, passionate and committed with knowledge of current conservation issues and experience in presenting talks to the public. You will also need a flexible approach to working hours, the confidence to represent the company in the media, a hands-on approach to the restraint and handling of animals and the ability to run the section in the absence of the section manager and deputy.

Although not essential for the role; experience gained in off road driving would be advantageous. Ideally you will have obtained an animal management qualification or equivalent experience but if not you must be willing to work towards obtaining a relevant qualification.

Working 5 days a week, including weekends and bank holidays, the successful candidate will have a genuinely flexible approach to working hours. Single person accommodation may be available. All applicants must have right to work in the UK.

Closing date: Friday 30th October 2015.
