Job Title:	The Deep: Marine IUCN Red List Officer. (IUCN: International Union for the Conservation of Nature)
IUCN Programme:	Marine Biodiversity Unit, UK Regional Office, The Deep.

Salary:	£27,000 per annum, 39 hours per week. This is a permanent contract
JOB SUMMARY
The Deep, one of the largest public aquariums in the United Kingdom, has a research associate position available which includes participation in a project to assess the risk of extinction for a large number of marine species for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species through a collaborative initiative with the IUCN Global Species Programme. The primary responsibilities will include species-specific background research to assist with the Red Listing process, organizing and facilitating international workshops and meetings, and writing proposals, reports and scientific papers. The post holder will play a key role in progressing the Global Marine Species Assessment, towards the initial goal of assessing 20,000 marine species by 2020. In addition they will be required to assist with the development and delivery of a conservation education programme for the general public as part of The Deep’s education remit.  The post holder will also advise and assist in the development of a model to encourage other aquariums to further engage with Red Listing and to showcase The Deep’s leadership in this effort. This position will report to both the IUCN Global Marine Species Assessment (GMSA) Manager and The Deep’s Curator.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Key functions as The Deep, Marine IUCN Red List Officer:    With the GMSA Manager and the GMSA postdoctoral researcher, jointly oversee the assessment process of priority marine species for publication on the IUCN Red List. This includes: o   Researching and writing assessments for priority marine species; o   Serving as reviewer for assessments prior to publication. ·        Contribute to development and implementation of projects that support the objectives of the GMSA. This includes: Species-specific background research, Organising and facilitating international workshops and meetings, Writing proposals, reports and scientific papers Engaging with and liaising with stakeholders and partners of the GMSA and The Deep Play a key role in contributing and promoting The Deep / IUCN partnership and the IUCN Red List To The Deep staff and visitors through occasional talks, workshops and classroom activities Various media and conference opportunities to the general public, the aquarium and zoo community and the wider conservation community. Developing the public conservation engagement messages With the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) Director of Specialist Group partnerships, build Red List Assessment capacity across the European aquarium community:  o   Develop a model for engaging, training and sustaining aquarium staff in Red List methodology and assessment tools. ·        Line-manage Red List interns and volunteers as needed. ·        Receive training and ongoing development through the GMSA and the IUCN Red List Unit. ·        Developing funding proposals and funding activities for Red List workshops. Other responsibilities: Extend own knowledge of scientific issues relevant to the work of the SSC and pursue training in required skills; Undertake any other duties as needed
PERSONAL SPECIFICATION
Essential: Minimum of an MSc in Marine Biology, Zoology, Oceanography, Conservation Biology or related field. Thesis topic in marine conservation biology or marine ecology. A high level of proficiency in scientific writing in English. An appreciation of the role of Aquariums and Zoos in conservation. A commitment to The Deep and its environmental policies. Self-motivation. Team working skills and good verbal communication skills. Attention to detail, a willingness to learn and a commitment to self-improvement. Ability to communicate effectively between stakeholders. Desirable: Demonstrable commitment to animal conservation either through voluntary work placements, projects or fundraising events. Demonstrable experience in scientific and public engagement, including good presentation skills. Knowledge of the IUCN Red List methods. Experience in modelling and spatial analysis in ecology. Experience in geographical information systems. Proficiency in Spanish or French. Supervising skills.
