The School of Veterinary Medicine and Science (SVMS) at the University
of Nottingham is the first brand new, purpose-built veterinary school in the UK
for over 50 years and it is our intent to make significant leading
contributions to both veterinary research and teaching within the context of
valid relevance and application to the wider veterinary profession.
Research is central to the activities of the School, both in terms of
maintaining ourselves at the forefront of national and international efforts in
veterinary medicine but also as an integral part of the training and education
for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
All current clinical practice should derive from advances in research.
The overarching purpose of research activities within SVMS is to improve
clinical practice and teaching. Clinical practice encompasses many aspects of
animal health including diagnosis, treatment, prophylaxis, production and
welfare management. Thus, improved clinical practice is the outcome of full
integration of research themes with the clinical requirement. The School has
established relations with a number of Clinical Associate Institutions and
Educational Partners and these Clinical Associate Practices are fully
integrated into the research and teaching environment of SVMS and their
clinical requirements drive much of the research development.
This unique role consists of a 4 year training post, based at one of
the Clinical Associate Practices (Twycross Zoo) and will combine preventive and
reactive veterinary care based at the zoo including pathology of all
species. It will involve training of clinical veterinary students and
undertaking a research doctorate project leading to a DVet Med which will be
supervised by academic members of staff based at SVMS. The area of research
will be focussed on ape heart disease and build upon the current research

Twycross Zoo
Twycross Zoo - East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMZS), is a renowned
primate conservation centre and houses over 140 species including
giant tortoises, elephants, penguins, flamingos, snow leopards. The zoo is the
only zoo in teh country to manage every species of great ape – gorilla,
orang-utan, bonobo and chimpanzee and collection diverse range of gibbons,
monkeys and lemurs.
The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic, dedicated team player
and experienced clinician. You will be able to join the zoo’s own vet health
team (2 vets, 1 nurse, 1 registrar), carrying out the preventive and reactive
veterinary care and pathology of all species. Duties also involve assisting
with the training of clinical vet students from the University of Nottingham,
research projects, departmental administrative tasks and data management.
Students must be Members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons,
or hold a veterinary degree qualifying them for membership and hold a valid
driving licence. A minimum of 2 years in veterinary practice and experience of
exotic or zoo animal medicine is essential. Further qualifications such as an
MSc in Wild Animal Health or Certificate in Zoo Medicine or other relevant
postgraduate qualification would be highly desirable.
This studentship is available from (January 2017) or as soon as
possible thereafter for a period of four years and provides a tax free UK/EU
postgraduate stipend £21,000. There are funding restrictions for non-EU
students.
