General Curator for Primate and Bird Sanctuary

Monkeyland and Birds of Eden, part of the SAASA group of Animal Sanctuaries, is based in Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape. www.saasa.org.za, www.monkeyland.co.za, www.birdsofeden.co.za.

SAASA has a vacancy for an exceptional General Curator with experience of working with a variety of exotic animals. Broad taxonomic knowledge on a range of species, managed within zoological type collections will be essential, with the focus being Avian and Primates.

The candidate will be responsible for:
-supervising and training their own staff of keepers as well as scheduling work,
-ensuring safe work practices,
-providing animal care,
- monitoring animal health,
- keeping accurate records,
- maintaining cleanliness of animal areas, as well as enrichment and maintenance. 

Normal duties will include day to day husbandry, daily log reports regarding the animals, routine maintenance of physical areas and enclosures, liaising with vet regarding animal welfare protocols procedures and medication distribution to animals.  Candidate must be able to maintain the area in compliance with SAASA and Cape Nature regulations and standards, including record keeping and husbandry care. This position requires interaction with Sanctuary visitors (public), maintenance and management staff. Curator staff are required to work weekends and holidays as the animal care schedule necessitates. Candidate must have a valid driver’s license

Experience Required
Candidates with primate and avian experience is a pre requisite. (Please list specific species experience).   Candidate must have excellent team work skills and be able to communicate with co-workers and supervisors effectively.  Candidate should have a minimum of a 3 year college degree or equivalent diploma in a related field and at least 2 years of animal care experience in a reputable Zoo / similar facility.  The candidate must be able to lift, bend and twist 50 lbs, and also must be able to work in all types of weather.

Work Hours:
Work week consists of five eight hour work days per week, with two days off.
Annual leave of 21 consecutive days per annum

Monthly salary: Negotiable
Plus Performance based annual bonus
