DEPUTY CURATOR OF
LOWER VERTEBRATES AND INVERTEBRATES
PERMANENT - 40 hours
per week

for a Deputy Curator of Lower Vertebrates and Invertebrates. For the right
candidate, this post offers a fantastic opportunity to work with a wide variety
of species ranging from Reptiles & Amphibians, to Fish & Invertebrates.
The Role:
• Assisting
the Curator of Lower Vertebrates & Invertebrates in the daily management of
the four sections, acting as a deputy to ensure the highest standards of animal
husbandry, welfare and exhibitry
• Overseeing
budgets and conservation/research projects
• Coordinating
exhibit development and staff training
• Collection
planning and welfare audits for the Lower Vertebrates & Invertebrates
sections
• Working
in the zoo’s public displays and quarantine areas, and supporting off show
breeding areas
• Reviewing
and editing peer-reviewed documents
• Representing
Chester Zoo at media interviews, internal and external meetings, workshops and
conferences both in the UK and overseas
The successful
candidate will have:
• A
Biological Science degree, HND or equivalent experience
• Expert
knowledge of the taxonomy, biology and key conservation issues relating to
Lower Vertebrates & Invertebrates
• Strong
leadership skills and the ability to build strong working relationships across
teams
• Experience
in the husbandry, design and management of animal exhibits and facilities
within a themed environment
• Excellent
communication skills, both verbal and written
• Excellent
project management skills and the ability to prioritise tasks
• A
full driving licence valid in the UK
Experience of
managing databases for ex situ populations (EEP/ESB) as well as using
SPARKS/PMx, and of working on in situ conservation projects would be an
advantage. A Masters degree in Biology or a closely-related subject would also
be desirable.
Hours of work are 40
hours per week worked Monday to Friday, with the requirement to work some
weekends and Bank Holidays as part of the Duty Curator rota.
