Position Description:
Would you like to
help develop and serve as the Sanctuary Manager for the first-ever monkey and
small wildlife sanctuary in Liberia? If so, this is an amazing opportunity! We
are seeking a volunteer Sanctuary Manager for a small new sanctuary in Liberia -
the Libassa Wildlife Sanctuary.
The sanctuary is a
place where wild animals come in, that are victims of the illegal bushmeat and
pet trade. At this moment, many different animals are staying here: pangolins,
potto, civets, duikers, parrots, monkeys, crocodiles, turtles,… Our main goal
is to release as many animals back into the forest as possible.
The Sanctuary Manager will be responsible for:
Animal care:
Managing and
carrying out day-to-day operations of the sanctuary. This includes general
animal husbandry, introduction of animals, record keeping, food preparation,
monitoring of animals, physical and emotional well-being, furnishing existing
enclosures and introducing and monitoring enrichment.
Cleaning,
maintaining, repairing and improving enclosures, equipment, and sanctuary
grounds, and assisting with construction projects.
Carry out basic
medical procedures and first aid if necessary
Logistic:
Work closely with
the sanctuary partners (FDA, SCNL, CI,…): attend meetings, write reports,…
Coordinate
confiscations and releases
Marketing:
Photography,
fundraising, creating a website, and other tasks as may be needed and assigned.
Assist with on- and
off-line fundraising efforts, outreach and advocacy in Liberia and
internationally.
Administration:
Being in charge of
the sanctuary budget, take care of the accountancy, write monthly reports,…
Management:
Provide guided
educational tours of the sanctuary to visitors of all ages and develop
educational materials and activities.
Direct and oversee
volunteers and/or local staff.
Qualifications/Experience:
- Previous related
sanctuary experience or desire and willingness to pursue a steep learning curve
both prior to arrival in-country and once in the position.
- Degree in zoology,
biology, animal care or veterinary science.
- Computer skills
required (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Internet)
- Experience living
in a developing country, preferably Africa is a plus.
- Healthy, mature,
patient, autonomous, social, outgoing, self-starter, supervisor, even-tempered,
work well with others, willing to learn, and able to tolerate periods of
isolation living on-site at the sanctuary.
- We prefer
non-smokers.
Salary/funding:
This is a voluntary
position, so there is no salary, apart from US$200 a month for expenses.
However, accommodation will be provided for the volunteer. The volunteer is
responsible for any additional non-work expenses incurred while traveling in
Liberia. The volunteer is required to have basic health care coverage and must
acquire the necessary vaccinations prior to entry to Liberia (yellow fever,
rabies, tetanus and hepatitis). Advice about what items are necessary for life
at the Libassa Wildlife Center will be provided to the successful applicant.
Support provided for
internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
Round-trip airfare,
meals, and accommodation will be provided at Libassa Ecolodge (www.libassa.com). The sanctuary is located at
Libassa Ecolodge.
If you stay for a 3
month period, ¼ of your flight ticket will be reimbursed; if you stay for 6
months, ½ of your flight ticket will be reimbursed, after one year, the entire
flight ticket will be reimbursed.
Term of Appointment:
Negotiable, but
ideally November 1st, 2017, with possibility of extension. Liberia is a safe
and friendly country to live in and was declared Ebola-free by the WHO.
You will receive
training on the job for 1 month by the current sanctuary manager.
