Dublin Zoo


We are currently seeking a highly motivated Veterinarian to join our Dublin Zoo team.

Reporting to the assistant to the director of Dublin Zoo, the veterinarian will be responsible for the overall veterinary care and wellness of the zoo collection and the management of the zoo veterinary surgery under the practice accreditation scheme as required by the Veterinary Practice Act 2005 and Statutory Instruments and The Veterinary Practice (Amendment) Act 2012. Additionally s/he will be responsible for maintaining Dublin Zoo’s BALAI status. Veterinary care will entail a full range of professional disciplines including medicine, surgery, anaesthesia, parasitology, nutrition and others.

The successful candidate will also be required to manage the quarantine area, work with the animal care staff to develop reward based training programs for the animal collection and develop the zoo’s research programs.

Administrative duties will include computerised records eg. ZIMS (Zoological Information Management System) in addition to HR, payroll & health and safety records and updates.

The successful candidate must be eligible for registration as a member of the Veterinary Council of Ireland and have 6 years veterinary experience including at least 3 years in a zoo or wild animal field. A zoo related secondary qualification from the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons or ZSL (Zoological Society of London) or internationally equivalent qualification is also desirable.

The ideal candidate will have an understanding and appreciation of Dublin Zoo’s ethics, research, education programs and conservation involvement and be an excellent communicator with the ability to be a trusted team player.
