ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Trainer I for the Bird/Mammal department will provide proper care and training to the bird and mammal collection.



Other duties include but are not limited to:

  • Clean and maintain assigned exhibits and support areas.
  •  
  • Observe animal behavior and report unusual/abnormal behavior to supervisor.
  •  
  • Prepare animal diets and feed according to established procedures.
  •  
  • Handle all raptors according to established procedures.
  •  
  • Use telemetry equipment as assigned.
  •  
  • Deliver all show segments except the African Serval.
  •  
  • Cope and talon trim all raptors excluding the bald eagle as assigned.
  •  
  • Net/cast all birds excluding the bald eagle as assigned.
  •  
  • Assist senior staff in animal restraint and veterinary procedures
  •  
  • Weigh and transport all trained animals excluding the African Serval as assigned.
  •  
  • Enter data into TRACKS.
  •  
  • Plan and direct the work of volunteers in primary areas of responsibility.
  •  
  • Communicate procedures and work duties to support staff when absent.
  •  
  • Work all auxiliary functions in the department as assigned.
  •  
  • Contribute to the maintenance and cleanliness of department areas


QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor’s degree in biology, psychology or related field from a four year college or university is preferred with one year of experience in a public aquarium/zoo. Any combination of education and experience would likely produce the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
