Zoo Attendant

As a Zoo Attendant you will provide care, maintenance, enrichment and training for over 350 animals from different climates and habitats. You will work in extreme weather conditions with a team of over 20 attendants. This is an exciting opportunity for an adaptable, motivated self-starter who can problem-solve and works well on a team when, speaking frankly, it can be a real zoo around here!

  • Clean animal enclosures and related feed dishes and utensils
  • Prepare animal diets and distribute feed and water to animal stock
  • Observe animals for signs of illness/injury and provide special care to orphaned/injured animals
  • Train animals and conduct training demonstrations
  • Present informative interpretive talks and tours to visitors, maintaining a high level of customer service
  • Perform security checks and patrols of zoo grounds and buildings
  • Maintain a variety of animal related records Undertake minor repairs and provide site facility maintenance
  • Drive a City vehicle on-site to perform job duties and within the City to pick up supplies as needed

Job Requirements:

  • Completed High School Diploma
  • Demonstrated basic knowledge and experience in biological sciences pertaining to the understanding and care of zoo animals, including habitat, diet, health, training, reproduction, evolution, and adaptation to environment and/or history
  • Experience with caring for exotic or zoo animals
  • Demonstrated skills in animal husbandry and associated knowledge of dietary, veterinary, and specific behavioural requirements of a wide range of animals
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions and to maintain required record keeping
  • Ability to interact with the public in a courteous and helpful manner, with a customer service mindset
  • Ability to multitask and work independently and on a team
  • Sufficient strength and stamina to perform heavy manual labour tasks including lifting 25 kg bags of food daily and assisting others with heavier weights
  • Ability and willingness to work in all outdoor weather
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Hire is dependent on a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
