Penguin Trainer
What you will do:
- Assists the Zoological Operations Manager & Assistant Curator in daily husbandry and maintenance of all terrestrial exhibits to provide appropriate and enriching habitats for the animal collection and maintain the highest level of animal health and welfare as it relates to the aquarium’s public and exhibit image.
- Assists Zoological Operations Manager & Assistant Curator in staff scheduling and time keeping of staff and activities.
- Provides ongoing animal training and enrichment through development of positive behaviours in our animal collection
- Provides public presentations through programs, social networks and various media
- Assists Assistant Curator in the implementation of written standards and protocols for all exhibits to ensure the highest standards for operational efficiency, cleanliness, display attractiveness, animal acquisitions and animal health.
- Ensures that an inventory of supplies and animal food items necessary for operation of this area, and the daily care of the collection, are maintained.
- Identify animal health problems and liaise with veterinary staff and assistant curator to develop a plan of action to handle the care and treatment of affected animals.
- Continually seek to make improvements to animal care, LSS, exhibits and activities/protocols.
- Assist in monitoring and determining needs for improving existing exhibits and support structures.
- Ensure routine checking of all aquarium exhibits and related LSS areas.
- Manage staff in daily activities related to cleaning, maintenance, feeding and other husbandry activities required on a day-to-day basis (including diving).
- Ensure that all LSS equipments are cleaned, maintained and serviced regularly.
- Reports problems and initiates actions to rectify any faulty equipment to the Zoological Operations Manager and Assistant Curator and/or Maintenance Supervisor.
- Ensures that all exhibition areas are kept clean and well-maintained.
- Ensure that the nutritional requirements of all organisms in our care are met including the timely ordering and replenishment of food, monitoring the regime of feeding (food variety and frequency) set by the Assistant Curator.

What you will be responsible for
Responsible for
assisting the Zoological Operations Manager & Assistant Curator in the
maintenance of exhibits, training of animals for guest programs and enrichment,
Animals Programs and interactions, Health & Welfare of Animals, the
acquisition, quarantine and daily care of a living collection of terrestrial
organisms. The position is responsible for supervising a contingent of staff
including animal trainers, interns, guests and trainees.
What you will need to succeed:
- Outstanding verbal communication skills
- Experience with working with aquatic systems in an aquarium, zoo, aquaculture facility or related field.
- Animal Presentation experience in a Zoo or similar institute
- Minimum 3 years Animal Training Experience in a Zoo or similar institute
- Experience in supervision of staff or the development and undertaking of guest interactive programs
- Qualification in biological science/Animal Husbandry or equivalent experience
- Experience with, and knowledge of, the biology, training and behaviour for any or all of the following: Penguins, Birds, reptiles, Otters
- Computer competency vital – particularly MS Excel spreadsheets and MS Access databases.
- Knowledge of Animal Record Keeping systems preferred
- Development of public presentations and experience with media releases
- Animal Training Experience a must
