Animal Research and Team Leader

About us:

RZSS
The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) owns and manages Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park. The Wildlife Park is a premier visitor attraction, based at Kingussie in the Highlands, with many Scottish and other species, some of which are now extinct in the wild. Edinburgh Zoo is the second biggest paying visitor attraction in Scotland (after the Castle along the road), with over 650,000 people each year enjoying an excellent day out. Of equal importance is our excellent international reputation for our conservation and education programmes and we are looking to the future with confidence. We’ve been a charity since our founding in 1909 and maintain a keen commercial edge to ensure we can sustain our excellent reputation. Our mission is to inspire and excite our visitors with the wonder of living animals, and thus to promote the conservation of threatened species and habitats.

Living Links and Budongo

The ‘Living Links to Human Evolution’ Research Centre was established in the Zoo through a grant from the Scottish Funding Council which finances the Scottish Universities. Living Links houses large communities of monkeys and functions both as a research resource for the Scottish Primate Research Group, a consortium spanning the Universities of St Andrews, Stirling, Edinburgh, Abertay and Aberdeen, and a Zoo exhibit open to visitors just like any other.

The Budongo Trail is an ambitious exhibit housing a large community of chimpanzees. Like Living Links, it contains purpose-built research facilities and RZSS strongly wishes to encourage scientific projects to be undertaken here.

Living Links is owned by the University of St Andrews but staffed by RZSS animal care staff. Budongo is owned by RZSS.

Animal Research and Team Leader – Living Links

A vacancy has arisen for an Animal Research and Team Leader to work within the Animals, Education and Conservation Department team. This post is funded by University of St Andrews for the first four years. The successful candidate will have at least 8 years of relevant experience working with exotic animals, with particular knowledge of Primates and will have passed the Advanced National Certificate in the Management of Zoo Animals. A science degree is highly desirable, with experience in research, research liaison and/or a relevant post-graduate qualification.

The post will involve weekend and some evening work.

Salary for this post will be in the region of £20,000 depending on experience.

Closing date is 5pm on 8 April 2011 with interviews planned by arrangement from 18th April onwards.

For full information on how to apply, please email jobs@rzss.org.uk  with a note of interest and follow the instructions.
