Volunteer - The Centre de Rehabilitation des Primates de Lwiro

Volunteer Position
at the
CRPL The Centre de Rehabilitation des Primates de Lwiro (CRPL)

The Centre de Rehabilitation des Primates de Lwiro (CRPL) is located in the South Kivu Provence of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Centre was established in 2002 by the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) and the Centre de Recherche en Sciences Naturelles (CRSN) and is now managed by a consortium of local and international organizations including the ICCN, CRSN, Coopera, Venner av Lwiro and Friends of Lwiro Australia.

The CRPL houses over fifty chimpanzees and more than sixty monkeys, representing more than ten different species.

With established education and awareness programs, and as the only wildlife sanctuary in the region, the CRPL acts as a crucial resource for all conservation organizations working in the area.

The Centre is situated just outside the boundary of the Parc National de Kahuzi-Biega (PNKB) making it the ideal venue for great ape health, law enforcement and conservation programs and is included in the PNKB’s Operational Plan and also in the Conservation Action Plan (CAP) for the Kivu Landscape, indicating the Centre’s imperative role in conservation in the region.

The CRPL is also a Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) member sanctuary.
Currently entering a period of change, the CRPL is developing new facilities to remove the animals from the cages in which they currently live and to house them in open plan enclosures enhancing their quality of life and improving our rehabilitation methods.

The next 5 years will be a dynamic time for the CRPL and we are seeking a volunteer to assist with this process of change.

While the CRPL runs a volunteer program for paying volunteers, this position will hold more responsibility and will primarily be a position for fundraising, grant writing, donor/sponsor relationships, web communications (Facebook, blog etc) and also seeking new partnerships for the CRPL.

The person in this position will also manage the volunteer program and oversee the sanctuary, education programs, construction programs, and animal integrations etc under the guidance of the Sanctuary Manager if they have the skills to do so.

This position is for a volunteer, and the person must pay all of his or her own expenses – including but not limited to travel, visas, insurance etc. Housing and basic food will be provided by the CRPL.

This position is for 12 months (with a 3 month probation period), with the option to extend further.
