for IUCN SSC Asian Wild Cattle Specialist Group; Contract role

IUCN SSC Asian Wild
Cattle Specialist Group (AWCSG) is increasing its activities and requires the
skills of a Programme Officer to join the group. Chester Zoo will kindly
hosting this post in its Field Programmes team.
The Role:
The Programme
Officer will be part of a team delivering work that follows the IUCN Captive
Breeding Specialist Group’s “One Plan Approach” for conserving Asian wild
cattle species. This concerns primarily Banteng and Anoa conservation, using
the framework of WAZA’s Global Species Management Planning. The role will also
include involvement with other Asian wild cattle species as activities develop,
including the Tamaraw, Saola and Wild water buffalo.
This role has
responsibility to oversee five areas of work:
• To
develop field conservation projects, as part of the Global Species Management
Plans in Indonesia; and elsewhere as programmes develop
• To
manage the relationships with partner zoos in European, North America and
Indonesia, including the transfer of expertise from European and American zoos
to Indonesian zoos, through training workshops and mentoring partnerships
• To
manage the fundraising aspect of these zoo relationships, and develop other
fundraising streams to support delivery of the group’s growing links with field
project partners
• To
produce a range of communication materials, including various reports,
newsletter, website, Facebook page and articles for various publications, as
well as editorial tasks for a scientific AWCSG Newsletter
• To
manage an intern as well as provide administrative support to the Chair of the
AWCSG and the network of partners.

The ideal candidate
will have:
• MSc
or PhD in biological sciences
• Experience
of field project management - design, implementation and monitoring;
including experience of field research,
surveys, population monitoring, and/or protected area management in Asia, in
particular in Indonesia
• Experience
of working in zoos or with zoos, ideally on population biology
• Experience
of coordinating effective training programmes
• Experience
of successful fundraising, continuous donor relationship management, and
funding report writing
• Very
efficient planning and logistical organisation skills
• Excellent
communication and networking skills
• Working
independently to plan and carry out tasks as well as working with a range of
stakeholders is essential
• Excellent
spoken and written English, knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia of advantage
• Ideally,
successful publication in international scientific journals
Hours of work are 40
hours per week, worked Monday to Friday based at Chester Zoo.
Location: Chester
Zoo, UK, with requirement for about three months travel pre year
Contract Rate:
Monthly contract rate of up to £2,500, before tax. The role is self-employed.
The contractor will be responsible for payment of all income taxes, and there
are no contributions to pension, social security or insurance payments. These
need to be arranged by the individual.
Contract Duration: 9
month contract, which will be renewed for 12 months on an ongoing basis.
