Flamingo Land zoological department is looking for two experienced zoo keepers to join our team. Flamingo Land is one of the leading tourist attractions in the UK, attracting more than 1.4 million visitors each year. The zoo is in an exciting phase of development that has recently seen the creation of a number of themed zoogeographic areas and the development of the education and conservation and research departments. The positions available are for the Carnivore section and the Children’s Planet section.

Experienced Keeper - Carnivore Section
The successful candidate will be working on our carnivore section which includes a large pride of lions, Amur and Sumatran tigers, meerkats and several bird aviaries. There will also be an opportunity to be trained on other animal sections. The successful candidate will have experience working in a zoological collection and have passed the Advanced National Certificate in the Management of Zoo Animals (or equivalent). Experience with any of the above mentioned species would be an advantage, but you will receive direct training in the husbandry of these species. The successful candidate will be expected to be very personable and able to communicate well with the visitors, including delivering public talks. The successful candidate will also be enthusiastic and a good team player.

Experienced Keeper – Children’s Planet Section
The successful candidate will initially be focused on our brand new Children’s Planet exhibit, which includes meerkats, porcupines, coatis, Asian short-clawed otters, banded mongoose, warthog, Visayan warty pigs, red river hogs and more. There will also be an opportunity to be trained on other animal sections within the zoo. All of our zoo keepers are encouraged to participate in a range of activities which include research, environmental enrichment and education. The successful candidate will have experience working in a zoological collection and have passed the Advanced National Certificate in the Management of Zoo Animals (or equivalent). Experience with any of the above mentioned species would be an advantage, but you will receive direct training in the husbandry of these species. The successful candidate will be expected to be very personable and able to communicate well with the visitors, including delivering public talks. Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMS), the World Primate Centre, has over 1,000 animals and is the most comprehensive collection of primate species and subspecies in the western world. We have exciting plans for developing the Zoo further, continuing our work in conservation of endangered species and providing the very best environment that we can.

A position has become available for a Senior Keeper to join the Birds and Tropical Section. As a Senior Keeper, you will be able to work effectively without supervision and deputise for the Section Head and/or Deputy, if necessary. This role provides a unique opportunity to join the Zoo at a time when it is undergoing an exciting period of change.

The successful candidate will be required to have:

• extensive knowledge of the captive management and husbandry of birds gained in a similar environment
• knowledge and experience of incubation and rearing skills
• gained the Advanced National Certificate for the Management of Zoo Animals or equivalent
• a flexible work attitude and the ability to work as part of a progressive thinking team

The role is full time, including weekends, on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly and will be commensurate with experience. We provide uniform, 31 days holiday and 5% employer’s pension contribution.

Key requirements:
• Veterinary degree.
• Five (5) years experience in zoo/wild animal medicine (experience requirements may be partially met by a relevant graduate degree).
• Demonstrated research experience.

We require a hardworking team leader who will be responsible for the day to day running of the animal care unit and to manage the curator team.
You will ensure that all the tasks required to maintain the health and welfare of animals are carried out.

A keen interest in the promotion of best practice in both husbandry and educational terms is essential.
Some experience of practical instruction at FE level and a teaching qualification would be beneficial.

You will have an Animal Care qualification and have skills in handling and management of companion and exotic animals.
The Animal Care Centre includes a mammal house, fish house, tropical house, kennels, grooming parlour, training area, aviary, paddock, kitchen area and education room.

You must be willing to work flexible hours to include some bank holidays and weekend work.
Access to personal transport is essential.

Bristol Zoo Gardens has a vacancy for an Experienced/Senior Keeper working on the mammal section. This position is to cover maternity leave working 80 hours per fortnight as part of the departmental 14 day rota, which will include weekends and bank holidays.

The successful applicant will be an experienced mammal keeper and will have at least three years experience of working with zoo animals. Having some practical knowledge of the husbandry of small nocturnal mammals will be an advantage.

The successful applicant will be educated to at least GCSE level, including English and a biological science, and hold the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals - DMZAA (previously known as ANCMZA) or equivalent. The ability to work within a team and having a general knowledge of the conservation and educational roles of zoos is also desirable.

Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent, is recruiting for the position of
Deputy Section Head of Primates.

Applicants must have a proven track record in a similar position at a recognised zoological collection. They must posses good all round animal husbandry skills and be capable of deputising for the Section Head in his absence.

A proactive approach coupled with good organisation and communication skills and an overall understanding of the role of the modern animal collection is essential, as is a full clean driving licence.

We are looking for someone with previous experience working as a deputy head keeper or senior keeper, preferably with primates; and experience of managing/supervising a small team of staff.

Howletts is home to a collection of around 160 rare and endangered primates, including Javan gibbons, Dusky langurs, Sulawesi macaques, Pied tamarins and Gelada baboons to name a few.

Howletts is a world class wildlife park run by the international conservation charity The Aspinall Foundation, and works to support a number of overseas conservation projects including the Java Primate Project in Indonesia.

The post holder will work under the direction of the Animal Management Centre (AMC) Curator in undertaking the routine care of all animals accommodated within the AMC, with a particular emphasis on assisting with the management and development of our small mammal collection. The post holder will also undertake practical instruction and assessment of groups of students and other trainees as required and work within a team to achieve exemplary standards in animal welfare, teaching and the overall presentation of the AMC.

Candidates should be educated to at least level 3 in a relevant vocational subject e.g. Animal Management, Veterinary Nursing, Biological Science or Zoology Degree. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a range of experience working within the animal management industry.

The post holder will be required to work weekends on a rotational basis.

Senior Animal Keeper - Large Carnivores



Senior Animal Keeper - Large Carnivores

Port Lympne Wild Animal Park is seeking an experienced, hardworking and dedicated keeper to work with a small team of enthusiastic and likeminded keepers. We have one of the leading collections of large carnivores in the UK including snow leopards, tigers, lions, cheetah, wild dogs, wolves and hyenas. The position will also include some reptile work.

This is a very physical role and the successful applicant will be expected to undertake all duties on the section from cutting up/prepping meat, and cleaning, to enclosure building and maintenance. Conservation education plays a big role in the park so there will be plenty of opportunities for doing talks and displays to the public.

You must have significant experience in animal keeping at a senior keeper level gained in a zoo park or equivalent environment with experience working with large carnivores and a full valid driving licence. We are looking for an individual who is hardworking, passionate and committed with knowledge of current conservation issues and experience in presenting talks to the public. You will also need a flexible approach to working hours, the confidence to represent the company in the media, a hands on approach to the restraint and handling of animals and the ability to run the section in the absence of the section manager and deputy.

Although not essential for the role; reptile experience; a firearm licence: experience gained in off road driving, experience of carcass collection and butchery would be advantageous. Ideally you will have obtained an animal management qualification or equivalent but if not you must be willing to work towards obtaining a relevant qualification.

Working hours are: 40 hours a week worked five days out of seven.

Award winning Blackpool Zoo is looking to fill some key positions within its Animal Department.

2 Experienced Mammal Keepers (Ref - AD/MK2/11)

Blackpool Zoo is looking for two experienced mammal keepers to assist in the daily care and husbandry needs their Large Mammal Section. They will also help in developing and moving forward the section within the framework of the animal department's aims and objectives in a new and exciting period within Blackpool Zoo’s history. The section currently maintains Giraffes, Bongos, Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, Macropods, Big Cats, Aardvarks and a protected contract programme with its Asian Elephants, as well as many other species.

You will need to be hard working, physically fit, enthusiastic and reliable. You should possess the Advanced National Certificate in the Management of zoo Animals or an equivalent and have a minimum of three years mammal keeping experience. Some experience with hoof stock and big cats would be advantageous although not essential.

We offer a competitive salary of £17,968.00 per anum, inclusion in the company’s pension scheme and the opportunity to further your career within the zoological world.

Blackpool Zoo is ideally and conveniently located on the outskirts of the "UK most popular holiday resort". Less than a 5 minute drive from the M55 motorway, the zoo’s site is also easily accessible from numerous rural villages in the surrounding area. The zoo itself is situated in a well established green belt area of the town and is only a 10 minute drive away from the town centre, which offers a veritable feast of nightlife, entertainment and shopping as well as the famous Golden Mile coastline.
