22.5 hours per week (3 days) Fixed-term for 12 months with possible opportunity to become permanent
Including weekends and public holidays on a rota basis

About the Role

  • You will contribute to an extensive growing animal collection, providing a high standard of animal resource for all animal related practical activity serving the curriculum and industry skills needs, of both university and college students.
  • Providing care for the animals within the collection, you will maintain the high standard of presentation of facilities and the planning and delivery of practical teaching are the core elements of this position.
  • You will assist and support the day-to-day running of the Animal Collection as directed by the Animal Collection Manager and will directly supervise student groups during the practical learning experience, supporting safe practice and the development of professional standards for an outstanding student experience.

About You

  • You will have previous practical experience within the animal industry or an animal establishment with an excellent understanding of best husbandry practices for a variety of domestic and exotic species.
  • You will demonstrate a sound knowledge of animal welfare standards and legislation
  • You will be confident in handling and working around wide variety of animal species and competently apply this to practical teaching delivery.
  • You will have an understanding of the education environment with a motivation to inspire learners to be highly employable through completion of the Hartpury Certificate and achievement of excellent results.
  • You will hold a teaching qualification or have a willingness to complete one.

Global Center for Species Survival Conservation Coordinator- Birds

The Indianapolis Zoo and the Species Survival Commission (part of the International Union for Conservation of Nature) have partnered to create the Global Center for Species Survival (GCSS), which will be operated from within the Indianapolis Zoo. The GCSS will house a multicultural team of full-time staff employed by the Zoo who will be dedicated to support the missions of the Indianapolis Zoo and the SSC.  Work will be primarily performed at the Indianapolis Zoo GCSS office, but travel may be required.

The GCSS Staff Team will provide critical training, capacity and coordination support to further mobilize the species conservation efforts of IUCN SSC Network of experts alongside wider partner and key stakeholder communities.

GCSS positions are open and available to all candidates worldwide. International candidates must be able to acquire a work visa. Fluency in English a requirement of all positions.  Fluency in other languages is desired.

Instructor – Animal Management Centre (Companion Animals)
£18,840- £22,508 (dependent upon skills and qualifications)

The post holder will undertake practical instruction and assessment of groups of students and other trainees as required.

Candidates should be educated to at least Level 3 in a relevant qualification e.g. Pet Store Management.  Candidates should be able to demonstrate significant professional experience working with domestic rodents (hamsters, rats, mice, gerbils), companion mammals (rabbits, guinea-pigs, ferrets, chinchillas), and exotic rodents (degus, harvest mice, dormice, jirds, sand rats etc.) as well as a real passion and enthusiasm for animals and helping all learners to reach their maximum potential. The post holder will hold an appropriate teaching qualification or be willing to attain one.
