ANIMAL CURATOR MANAGER

Under the supervision and instructions of the Director of the Zoo, he/she will be responsible for the animals welfare and the promotion of the Programme for Research and Conservation at the Zoo, in line with the guidelines and objectives of the Global Strategy of Zoos and Aquariums for Conservation (2005) and the Strategic Plan of the Zoo of Barcelona (2012).


MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Give advice and support to the Director of the Zoo
  • Coordinate, manage and administer the material and human direct resources in order to meet existing needs at any time, propose improvement plans related to material resources and enhance the professional development of individuals in charge, to promote the competitiveness of the organization and its adequate positioning in front of new challenges and requirements.
  • Establish strategies, determine the objectives and the most appropriate actions to implement in the area, optimizing costs and resource allocation.
  • Develop, execute and perform the appropriate follow-up of the management of the planning basic tools assigned to his/her area: Collection Plan, Collection Inventory and Research and Conservation Programme (Barcelona Zoo Foundation).
  • Management and supervision of the activity and the achievement of objectives by the assigned staff: Curators, vets and technical staff and auxiliary.


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Doctoral degree in Biology or Veterinary Medicine, with specific knowledge and experience in wildlife, biological conservation, animal health and welfare, environmental education and research applied to these fields.
  • Fluent in Spanish and English. Knowledge of Catalan or other languages an advantage.
  • Minimum of 3 years proven experience in a similar position.
  • Proven experience in management and control of multi-disciplinary teams in complex environments.
  • Experience in leadership, management and coordination of research and conservation centres or similar organizations in the wildlife field.

Scotland’s National Aquarium
Deep Sea World is a market leader visitor attraction and Scotland’s gem based in North Queensferry.  Our Aquarium hosts the largest temperate marine display in the UK through its underwater walkthrough tunnel.  Other displays include tropical marine, freshwater, reptiles, amphibians and marine mammals.
Aquarist / Diver
The responsibility of the Aquarist/Diver will be varied, challenging, but extremely rewarding.  A hands on approach is required to ensure you achieve the highest standard of animal care and husbandry. 
You will be responsible for maintaining and developing all Deep Sea World’s displays and exhibits, along with promoting public education and awareness in relation to conservation of biodiversity. 
In addition to this you will also maintain, clean, tidy and safe standards of all plant rooms; tool rooms, laboratories and quarantine facilities
The successful candidate will be expected to be very personable and able to communicate well with the visitors as you will be responsible for promoting and participating in public presentations and education sessions, as well as conversing with our visitors whilst carrying out your daily duties around the aquarium. 
The role requires you to take members of the public into our main tank (as part of our dive experience package), and to carry out shows and maintenance dives. It is desirable, but not essential, that you are qualified to PADI Divemaster or equivalent and hold an in date dive medical.  Dive specific training can be undertaken if not already at this level.
This is a full time post working on a rota’d basis which includes regular weekends and bank holidays as well as being on call for out of hour’s emergencies.

This is a fixed term post for 2 years.
An exciting opportunity for a Lecturer has arisen within the School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences at our Brackenhurst campus.   The School is located in a 200-hectare estate near the attractive Minster town of Southwell.  There are fully equipped laboratories and a veterinary nursing facility as well as an animal unit and equestrian centre.

We are looking for an experienced lecturer who is enthusiastic and has a strong desire to teach and undertake research to join the successful animal and equine science academic team within the School.  A teaching qualification is essential. 
The successful candidates will have expertise in zoo housed species and will primarily teach on the animal science courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level.  Subjects to be covered (both in theory and linked practical sessions) may include but are not limited to:
·         Animal management, behaviour and welfare of zoo housed species.
·         Nutrition and health of zoo housed species.
·         Zoo organisation.
·         Research methods and data analysis.
·         Animal science laboratory practicals, animal handling and field work.

You will need to be motivated, organised and able to take responsibility.  Additionally you need to have excellent communication skills and be able to work effectively with others.

Experience of course leadership and tutoring students is desirable.  Additionally this post will support the development of a new master’s course in the animal science area.

This post is strategically important in relation to supporting the research capacity within the team particularly leading up to REF 2014.  Consequently it is essential that applicants will be undertaking relevant research and presenting results at conferences and publishing in journals plus be eligible to be selected for REF 2014.

In the heart of Bristol located on the Harbourside, our Aquarium hosts our largest display of native species themed around a sunken ship.  Other displays include an amazing underwater walkthrough tunnel which includes exotic species.  Bristol Aquarium also has a large botanical house home to an array of plant species as well as Coral Sea display which is home to a number of species of sharks and rays.

Purpose:   To ensure the highest standards of animal husbandry and exhibit maintenance throughout the Bristol Aquarium. Through  consideration of the Visitor experience, fun, education, value, conservation awareness and animal welfare – employ Zoological strategies and an enthusiastic attitude to deliver the highest standard of exhibits and informative talks throughout Bristol Aquarium ensuring that Visitors are satisfied and want to return. 

PEOPLE MANAGEMENT
  • Compile Zoological Team rotas to ensure adequate team cover for both Zoological Team and Dive operations within Budget and distribute 4 weeks ahead
  • To agree short / medium / long term goals for self and each BA Zoological Team member and focus on achieving such goals through clear objectives and clear timescales
  • Responsible for undertaking the Induction, training and appraisals for the BA Zoological Team.
  • Co-ordinate the BA volunteer and work experience programs and training programs.
  • Represent the Zoological team at BA management level by attending meetings and assuming Duty Management responsibility as and when agreed on a BA Management Rota.

FINANCE MANAGEMENT
  • To assist the Curator in controlling costs and expenses to budget obtaining best value for money on expenditure
  • Review with Curator on a monthly basis departmental expenditure
  • Assist the Curator with timely and accurate completion of Zoological payroll reporting to deadlines
  • Ensure that consumables are kept in stock to meet the requirements of the Zoological Team and Divers

ANIMAL HUSBANDRY & DISPLAYS
  • Day-to-day management of animal husbandry through a hands on involved approach
  • Assist Curator in ensuring that BA displays and exhibits are maintained to a high standard (weekly walkabout report used to identify positive and negative feedback on exhibits)
  • Monitor the water quality of BA exhibits within parameters assigned by Curator
  • Maintain clean, tidy and safe standards of all plant rooms, tool rooms, laboratories and quarantine facilities
  • Monitor and meet the nutritional requirements of BA animals
  • Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of assigned exhibits
  • Maintain and manage Life Support Systems liaising with Curator

DIVING

  • To satisfactorily complete dive courses agreed with Curator
  • Undertake training to become PADI Divemaster/BSAC Dive Leader if not already at this level
  • Responsible for ensuring Dive Medical is up to date at all times
  • Maintaining own records of diving and ensuring compliance with HSE & PADI regulations
  • Maintaining accurate records of dive equipment
  • Supervising and dive tending for shows, training, maintenance and collecting dives
  • Scuba diving for shows, maintenance, training and collection 
  • Assist with monitoring, servicing and maintenance of scuba equipment
  • Responsible for reporting any health and safety incidents to the Curator and Dive Contractor


ZOO LICENCE

  • Assist Curator in ensuring that BA adheres to all applicable regulatory framework requirements  e.g. Zoo Licence, Health and Safety, Diving at Work Regulations 1997 etc
  • Maintain BA livestock records utilising current recording protocols - 7 Column format, ICIS  in accordance with Zoo Licence regulations
  • To ensure Education, Research and Conservation takes place at  BA and are fully recorded in accordance with the Zoo Licence regulations

STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT
  • Production of development plan for assigned exhibits
  • Support Zoological Team with submission of development plans for exhibits and monitor progress to completion
  • Invest time in compiling plans for Zoological CAPEX proposals in July on an annual basis
  • Completion of any approved Zoological CAPEX projects within budget and in agreed timescales

CUSTOMER SERVICE
  • Responsible for delivering world class customer service at all times.
  • To ensure the zoological team is providing outstanding customer service at all times.
  • To manage the talks and events programme to ensure quality delivery.
  • To ensure first class delivery of specialist talks, workshops, and tours for all group bookings.
  • To oversee and review staff training and delivery of education programme.
  • To work closely with Head of Displays and Marketing to ensure progression of customer 

PERSONAL MANAGEMENT
  • To provide leadership by communicating well, maintaining good business relationships and representing BA in a positive light
  • To be responsible for ongoing development of self
  • To attend training courses as required by the business

OTHER DUTIES
  • To be a key holder and provide cover for environmental and intruder alarm call outs.
  • To be available to assist at other sites if required

Flamingo Land zoological department is looking for a dynamic and knowledgeable Head Keeper to join our team.  Flamingo Land is one of the leading tourist attractions in the UK, attracting more than 1.4 million visitors each year.  The zoo is in an exciting phase of development that has recently seen the creation of a number of themed zoogeographic areas and the development of the education, conservation and research departments.  The position available is for a Head Keeper to supervise a diverse section of the zoo consisting of our Carnivore, Primate and Bird areas.

The successful candidate will have experience working in a zoological collection and have passed the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (or equivalent).  The successful candidate will be responsible for daily management of a team of up to five members of staff and will have demonstrable experience of managing people in a working environment as well as knowledge of legislation governing the operation of a zoological collection.  This is a practical position and the successful candidate will be expected to cover these working areas as required.  Therefore, experience of working with carnivores and primates is a priority, whilst knowledge and experience of working with birds would be an advantage.  The successful candidate will be expected to be very personable and able to communicate well with staff and visitors, including delivering public talks. The successful candidate will also be enthusiastic and a good team player.  Flamingo Land encourages personal development of all zoo staff through participation in ABWAK symposia and workshops, attending Taxon Working Groups, attending zoo conferences and managing studbooks.  Members of the zoo team also have the opportunity to visit our conservation project in Tanzania.

The position is available on a full time basis and includes 30 days paid annual leave. The candidate will be expected to work weekends and late evenings as required.

Salary range: £18,700 - £21,000.

The Director of Collections performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects San Diego Zoo Global’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife, conservation and pursues green/conservation practices when feasible. The Director of Collections is responsible for the organization’s Zoological Collection; oversees long‑range plans affecting the collection in support of the organization’s exhibition, education, and conservation purposes.   • Ensures proper animal welfare for the organization’s collection
  • Ensures guidelines for each species are followed properly
  • Recommends and develop policy and procedure improvements for animal care and welfare
  • Develops and implements the organization’s long‑range zoological collection plans
  • Leads collection master plan with curatorial staff
  • Coordinates operational activities between Zoo’s and Safari Park’s different collection issues
  • Participates in developing exhibit priorities and design
  • Coordinates major planning activities across departments with Zoo and Safari Park management
  • Consults with curatorial, animal care, scientific, and veterinary staff regarding collection management
