Applications are invited for an experienced keeper on the Large Mammal Section of the Park.

The successful applicant will be responsible for assisting in the daily husbandry of the section, and will work in close co-operation with the Section Head and his staff towards the continuous development of the section. They will be expected to undertake all relevant aspects of work in a progressive animal collection. Assisting in the presentation of educational talks is essential.

A minimum of 3 years’ experience with Hoofstock and Large Mammal species is essential. Applicants will need to demonstrate good communication skills, be self-motivated, and able to lead and work as part of a team. Possession of a relevant animal management qualification is desired and a full driving licence is essential for this position.

Highly motivated, experienced, and dedicated animal professional is required to work with rescued Asiatic black bears and Malayan sun bears at our Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre in Tam Dao, Vietnam.

The position holder will work as part of our Bear & Vet Team responsible for overseeing teams of local bear care staff involved in the daily husbandry and management of the bears housed within the rescue centre. Furthermore, the bear manager would oversee a team of horticultural staff who are responsible for maintaining the bear enclosures and the plants and foliage around the centre. The position involves working closely with Bear Team Supervisors and liaising with the veterinary team to manage various daily operations. The Bear Manager will report directly to the Bear & Vet Team Director.

Responsibilities

• Co-coordinating various daily operations:
• Animal care and management;
• Maintenance and adjustment of existing enrichment programs;
• Ordering stock as required;
• Maintaining bear behavior records & databases.
• Operant conditioning and formal bear training programmes for a variety of medical, behavioural and management requirements.
• Report writing.
• Human resources:
• Staff evaluations;
• Ensuring morale is maintained within bear care staff;
• Identifying and addressing HR issues with the Bear & Vet Team Director as they arise.

Requirements

§  University degree in zoology, biology, conservation, animal behaviour or related field

§  Three to five years work experience in a captive wild animal facility or similar working environment

§  Computer literacy, including Excel

§  Strong management skills and the ability to work in a team or independently

§  Fluent in English

§  A good sense of humor, excellent communication skills, and the ability to live and work closely with the rest of the team comprising both western and local staff in a rural area of Northern Vietnam.

§  Patience and willingness to work within a different culture are essential

§  Suitable candidates must be able to commit for a minimum of 2 years.

Appointment is paid, full-time, five (5) days a week with some weekend work applicable.

We are seeking to recruit an Interpretation Manager on a permanent basis within our award winning Discovery & Learning Division. The Interpretation Manager is responsible for ensuring all interpretation is produced to a high standard in line with the Zoo’s core mission. A creative and collaborative approach, sound project management, excellent copywriting skills and an eye for detail are all essential.

The post-holder will develop storyline and messaging to influence 1.43 million zoo visitors a year, inspiring them to act for wildlife and contributing significantly to the experience of our visitors.

Applicants should have substantial experience developing exhibitions, exhibits and interpretive schemes in a zoo, aquarium, museum or similar environment. A formal qualification with an interpretation element is desirable. A working knowledge of conservation and zoology is essential.

This role involves liaison and consultation with a wide range of people from staff at all levels to external partners, contractors and suppliers, requiring a high level of diplomacy and problem solving skills, alongside experience of commissioning artists, designers and tradespeople. The successful candidate will have direct line management for the Interpretation Officer. Experience of supervising a team and managing the work of others is essential.

Work is a five day week, Monday to Friday with occasional need for weekend working. Salary is £30,227.53 per annum for a 40 hour working week.

Project background The Mauritius Reptile Recovery Programme is run jointly by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF), Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the National Parks and Conservation Service. The programme was started in 2006, but is built upon three decades of island restoration work by the project partners.

Mauritius was once home to one of the world’s richest reptile diversities, which was integral to the pristine ecosystem. Following the island’s colonisation in the 16^th Century numerous non-native species have been introduced and most of the natural Mauritian forests have been destroyed. These disturbances caused the loss of more than 60% of Mauritian reptile species from the main island. Several species went extinct, but some managed to remain on one or a few of the offshore islands. To enhance their survival and restore missing ecological processes we have been restoring endemic reptile species back to islands that have been made safe for their return. Using a mixture of translocations, captive breeding and intensive monitoring we have reduced the risks of extinction for a number of reptile species. For example, the Telfair’s skink and Günther’s gecko, have recently been translocated to the island Nature Reserve Ile aux Aigrettes.

Ile aux Aigrettes is a small lagoon island (26ha) where conservation activities have been ongoing since the 1980s to restore the endangered fauna and flora of Mauritius. The island has a field station, which is permanently occupied by approximately ten staff and volunteers. The MWF also operate ecotourism and educational activities on the island.

The position We are looking for a highly self-motivated and conscientious volunteer to work on Ile aux Aigrettes and assist the reptile team to:

• Monitor the health, distribution and abundance of the Telfair’s skink and Günther’s gecko populations
• Enhance skink productivity through egg incubation, rearing of young and their food
• Search for and monitor Günther’s gecko nest sites and eggs
• Ensure the island is free from invasive predators through monthly monitoring and trapping

The work involves intensive systematic searches throughout the forest on the island, reptile capture, handling and assessment of condition and health. Invasive species control is an ongoing and important component of the work. Accurate data collection/entry and reporting are a necessity and the volunteer will be expected to talk to tourists/visitors about their work and assist with VIP tours and student workshops on the island. The volunteer will receive training and guidance from the reptile team.

Requirements Applicants will need to:

• Have recently gained a BSc in the biological sciences and have a keen interest in herpetology
• Be physically fit and able to stay focused on repetitive work in a hot and humid environment
• Be ready to adapt to unforeseen circumstances with initiative and due care
• Have good written and spoken English
• Have a sound knowledge of spreadsheet applications and data management
• A working knowledge of programmes R, Mark, Distance and GIS software preferred, but not essential
• A full clean driving license is preferred

We need the volunteer to commit for a six to twelve month period from September 2015. They would be required to pay for their own return airfare and must have comprehensive insurance cover (including repatriation) for the duration of their stay. There will be a one off charge of approx £50 for a basic medical upon entry and approximately £150 to £200 per month will be needed to cover costs for food, socialising and personal items. Personal equipment needs are basic (eg work clothes, good boots, sun protection, reliable watch, LED head torch, thin sleeping bag and/or bed sheet, mosquito net, mobile phone). Accommodation and transport between MWF sites is provided.

In partnership with the Board of Directors and by overseeing the work of the Development team, the Executive Director will manage IBR’s annual fundraising plan, which will be inclusive of corporate sponsorships, foundation and government funding sources, and individual donors. The Executive Director will have a particular focus on major donors, and will also cultivate community relationships and develop strategic partnerships with other organizations, corporations, and government agencies.

Along with these responsibilities, the Executive Director will work closely with the IBR Board of Directors to ensure the organization’s strong fiscal health. This position will seek to sustain positive government, community, and partner support as well as increase visibility, develop and implement specific goals and objectives, and otherwise fulfill the organization’s mission.

Duties will include daily husbandry and management of the elephants including training, washing and exercising.  The successful applicant will be required to work as part of a close knit team, and be able to demonstrate the good communication skills required for regular elephant presentations and special experiences.

Colchester Zoo are looking to recruit an experienced Deputy Head to assist the Head of the Zoo’s ‘Tiger’ Section and supervise in their absence. The successful applicant will be expected to lead a small team of staff and oversee the day to day management of a diverse collection of animals, ensuring the highest standards of animal husbandry, welfare, and health and safety at all times. Species include Amur Tigers, Pygmy hippo, Timber Wolves, Patas Monkeys, a number of different Vulture species, Owls, Visayan Spotted Deer and Warty pigs in a mixed exhibit and a variety of reptile, amphibian, invertebrate and fish species.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

·        Ensure the highest standards of animal husbandry and welfare at all times including assisting in the implementation of training and enrichment programmes, monitoring health, researching nutritional needs and ensuring excellent enclosure presentation.

·        Supervise staff in the absence of the Head of Section which will include managing rotas and holidays, training new and existing staff to the required standards, organising working protocols and procedures and providing feedback on performance.

·        Assist in the management and implementation of all aspects of Health and Safety including working protocols, risk assessments and manual handling.

·        Manage animal records, produce reports and put forward proposals.

·        Ensure the highest of standards of visitor experience through exceptional customer services and care.

We are looking for an individual who is highly motivated and hard working, with a minimum of 7 years experience in a Zoo environment. Excellent customer service, communication and animal husbandry skills are essential as is previous experience supervising staff and an excellent understanding of health and safety in a Zoological setting. Experience with at least some of the species listed above would be beneficial and in particular with Big cats.

Applicants must have the Diploma in the Management of Zoo animals and Aquaria (DMZAA) or an equivalent qualification and a full valid driving licence is essential.

This is a permanent full –time position with a start date as soon as is possible and Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience.
