ZooLab, the UK’s No.1 provider of live educational animal experiences, are looking for enthusiastic, confident and experienced Educational Presenters to deliver interactive animal experiences to a range of audiences in line with the national curriculum, curriculum for excellence and animal therapy/ early years learning outcomes.

You will receive full presentation and animal husbandry & welfare training, as well as specialist training in working with our various audience groups. You will also receive a robust accredited training programme which will be ongoing throughout your time with the company.

Your territory will comprise of around a 60 mile circumference of your home postcode (dependant on area), and you will use your own vehicle to travel to booked appointments. This position may involve working within Central London as well as outer boroughs.

In return you will receive reimbursement of petrol expenses as well as car allowance to cover any maintenance costs of the vehicle.

You will keep a selection of animals at home with you, all animals, equipment and general set up will be provided and full support given locally.

You will need an Animal Activity Licence to operate as an Educational Animal Presenter in England. This is issued to you from your local authority on completion of an application process and home inspection. ZooLab will guide you through this process, and cover all costs of the licence.

Salary: Up to £27,000 depending on experience 

Location: Home based with regular travel to London  

 

The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) is the professional association for good zoos and aquariums. We drive excellence in animal welfare, conservation, education and research, demonstrate the value of zoos and aquariums to society and use our collective expertise to influence policy and champion positive behaviours.  

We have an exciting new vacancy for a Communications and Campaigns Officer to join our small, dedicated team and support us in developing and delivering on our strategic goals.  

The Role 

The Communications and Campaigns Officer will work primarily with the Communications and Public Affairs Manager and the Chief Executive to develop and implement our new communications strategy. You will play a key role in raising the profile of BIAZA, promoting the work of our members and contributing to public affairs campaigns.  

Key Responsibilities 

  • Work with the Communications and Public Affairs Manager and the BIAZA CEO to deliver on BIAZA’s aims and objectives in communications and public affairs 
  • Developing and delivering a range of digital online communications, including mailings, letters and BIAZA’s newsletter.  
  • Developing video and film for BIAZA.  
  • Developing high quality briefing materials for a range of audiences including political and media briefings.  
  • Supporting and where appropriate deputising for the Communications and Public Affairs Manager and CEO in meetings. 
  • Working with colleagues in BIAZA committees and working groups including organising task forces and developing ideas.  
  • Developing communications reports which track changes in BIAZA’s audiences.  

 

Essential skills: 

  • Excellent spoken and written English 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written) and the ability to communicate in a confident and engaging manner at all levels 
  • Experience in writing clear and compelling copy in a range of formats, catering to different audiences and with different messaging 
  • Knowledge and experience of effective communications including digital tools, monitoring and mailings 
  • Experience in videography and social media management  
  • Experience in delivering and evaluating campaigns for a variety of audiences  
  • Strong attention to detail including proofing skills 
  • Be able to work to tight deadlines and prioritise effectively 

 

Desirable: 

  • Experience in research and distilling complex ideas into clear messages 
  • Graphic and design skills 
  • Strong organisational skills and experience in organising stakeholder events 
  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for politics, political procedure and influencing policy 
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to conservation, as demonstrated by career path, voluntary work or outside interests  

 

This role will be mainly home based, however, regular travel to London for team, and other, meetings will be required. There will also be a requirement to visit members and attend seminars, conferences and networking events around the UK and Ireland. These may occur in the evenings or at weekends. 

 

This is a full-time, permanent role contracted for 37.5 hours per week. We provide flexible working opportunities, which can be discussed at interview. The salary for this role is up to £27,000 depending on experience. We also offer 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays.

Sessional Zoo Academy Regional Centre Co-ordinator – Northern Ireland and Ireland

£24.26 per hour (including multiplier, admin time and holiday pay)

 

You will assist Sparsholt College with the organisation and delivery of the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals and Volunteer Programme courses. 

 

This will include the following key duties:

 

·      Being the supportive and responsive point of contact for students in the region.

·      Conducting face to face and remote tutorials for students in the region.

This involves travel to 10+ collections across the region.

·      Conducting one tutorial per term, per student in the region, as a minimum to provide suitable guidance and support.

·      Recording student tutorials and progress on the college electronic systems (a laptop is provided).

·      Responding to student enquiries and need for support.

·      Communicating effectively with the Curriculum Leader for Zoo Animal Studies regarding student progress and grade tracking.

·      Carrying out communication between students and Assessors in the region.

·      Operating ‘Ledge’ - the virtual learning environment - for students in the region.

·      Administering the process of recruitment of students onto courses from collections within the region.

·      Assisting with annual induction day(s) by communicating with students and preparing an appropriate venue.

·      Administering for the annual Test in the region – including invigilation and access arrangements as authorised by the college.

·      Grading and providing feedback for Unit 31 (Husbandry Portfolio) for students in the region, within a three week turnaround timeframe.

·      Attending two Coordinator’s meetings a year and provide feedback to the college.

 

 

Requirements

 

The post holder will:

-       Have considerable experience and understanding of working in the zoo or aquarium industry.

-       Be based in either Northern Ireland or Ireland area geographically.

-       Be able to promote the college values as well as those of this BIAZA led training provision.

-       Hold an appropriate academic or professional qualification in a relevant subject at a minimum of level 3.

-        Ideally have gain the DMZAA qualification themselves or have other specific experience of this course.

-       Have experience of assessing on vocational programmes.

-       Hold, or being willing to gain, relevant qualifications for such assessing.

-       Be expected to be self-motivated and a good communicator.

 

The specific hours involved in this role depend on the student intake each year.  Currently there are 15 students with each requiring 3 tutorials per year (one per term), lasting between 30 minutes – 1 hour max. Portfolios take approximately 45 minutes to an hour to mark, and each student is required to create one portfolio during the two-year course – which is graded at the end of second year. As well as this, there is around 2 hours of admin time per week to enable communication with students to facilitate adequate support. The Summer term is the busiest time in this role where tutorials, support and portfolio marking are completed. There are also two meetings to attend per year (November & May typically).

The AHWRC is a leading practical facility that houses a large range of both domestic and exotic animal species. The centre holds a number of industry recognised licenses and is currently going through an exciting period of development.

 

The post holder will undertake practical instruction and assessment of groups of students across various animal sections of the AHWRC. You will be expected to deliver exceptional practical teaching using a range of both companion and exotic animal species. The ability to communicate effectively is a key aspect of this role.

Candidates should be educated to at least level 3 in a relevant qualification e.g. Animal Management.  Candidates should be able to demonstrate significant professional experience working with a range of animals as well as a real passion and enthusiasm for animals and helping all learners to reach their maximum potential. The post holder will hold an appropriate teaching qualification or be willing to attain one. The ability to communicate effectively is a key aspect of this role

 

This post is to be based at the Sparsholt campus.
