TEMPORARY KEEPER HERPETOLOGY DEPARTMENT, DWCT


(6 months contract)

The Role

Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust is looking for an amphibian and reptile keeper with an understanding of the role and function of a modern zoological collection and in situ conservation programmes.

This is a temporary contract for six months.

Responsibilities will include the daily husbandry and management of a large and diverse collection in conjunction, working with other section staff, keeping detailed records, being involved with wider herpetological and zoo activities and collaborating with other organisations.

The Candidate

Prior experience in the husbandry of certain amphibians, reptiles and/or fish in other zoos, aquariums, museums, universities, and/or private collections holding reptiles and amphibians in captivity would be an advantage but is not essential. Ideally the applicant should hold a first degree in a relevant subject. A logical, precise and scientific approach to animal keeping is required and competency with standard computer software is desirable.

This position involves a level of physical fitness as climbing ladders, lifting heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) and/or working in awkward positions are involved.

Good verbal communication skills, considerable interpersonal skills and a high degree of appreciation of customer service are desired. The successful applicant will be a strong team player and able to show a high degree of initiative and independence.
