Zookeeper (Reptiles and Birds)

Zookeeper (Reptiles and Birds)

Dyreparken is Norway’s greatest family attraction located in Kristiansand in the south of Norway. We are visited by over 1 million people annually, and we are home to 113 different animal species, many of which are part of international breeding programs. Our animal department is currently looking for an experienced zookeeper who is passionate about herpetology and birds!

The reptile and bird department is responsible for the care, welfare and display of a variety of reptiles ranging from a 5 meter reticulated python to endangered tortoises and tree monitors. There are currently exciting plans to add more species to the collection. The department works closely with the primate department, and is also responsible for a small collection of invertebrates, tropical birds, flamingos, parrots and red pandas. A new reptile house will be opening in the spring of 2023 and this position will play a significant role in the development of this new area.

Responsibilities:

  • Daily responsibility for an assigned area within the reptile and bird department.

  • Cleaning and maintenance of enclosures.

  • Prepare food for the animals in your assigned area.

  • Perform animal presentations for the zoo’s visitors.

  • Create and provide species-appropriate environmental enrichment.

  • Train animals using reward-based methods.

  • Assist with other areas as needed.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years experience with reptiles and/or birds.

  • Knowledge of creating dynamic and functional habitats to ensure great animal welfare and an excellent guest experience.

  • Preference for applicants who have previously worked with Category 1 animals.

  • Practical experience in environmental enrichment and positive reinforcement training with reptiles and birds.

  • Knowledge of Scandinavian language is preferred, but English-speaking candidates will also be considered.

Personal Skills:

  • Driven by creating excellent visitor experiences.

  • Passionate about animal husbandry and welfare.

  • Solid team player who is also able to work independently.

  • Creative and open-minded.

  • Good problem solving skills.

  • Structured yet flexible.

Zookeepers work on a rota of 5 days per week (37,5 hrs), working every 4th weekend. They must be able to work on some holidays.

What do we offer?

A fixed full time contract until January 2024, starting in the beginning of 2023, in a department under continuous growth and with exciting plans for the future.
