Chester Zoo is the UK’s No.1 top zoo and is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation breeding programmes, research and education.
The zoo is currently expanding with the exciting new ‘Islands’ site opening in spring 2015.  This unique and innovative project will provide an immersive experience; showcasing the animals of South-east Asia and working towards a better understanding of the vital conservation work being undertaken in this region.  As a result of this growth, we have a fantastic opportunity for a Bird Keeper to join our large and varied bird section.
The post will involve the daily care and management of a wide range of bird species including: Passerines, Hornbills, Pigeons, Cassowary and Parrots as well as providing the chance to assist with cover keeping on other sections within the bird teams.
Chester Zoo aims to set a benchmark for animal welfare and the successful candidate must be able to deliver an excellent level of animal husbandry, care and welfare for the assigned birds; ensuring that all enclosures and facilities are maintained to the highest possible standards. 
We are looking for someone with good Avicultural knowledge and expert knowledge of bird husbandry, diet and reproduction.  Experience of hand-rearing Passerines, and other small Softbills, and a good knowledge and understanding of bird training techniques is vital for this role.  Experience in the care and exhibition of birds and proven experience of working in a zoo or bird collection is also essential. 
The successful candidate will be educated to HND or degree level in Zoo Animal Management/Zoological Science, or have the equivalent experience.  They will have outstanding observation skills, with a high attention to detail and proven experience in delivering the highest standards of husbandry and exhibitry.  Having previously worked effectively as a member of a team, the ideal candidate will also demonstrate excellent communication skills.
Competency in the use of computers and basic software packages, including ZIMS software, would be advantageous for this role in order to maintain accurate records.  A full clean UK driving licence is also desirable.
Salary is £16,984 per annum for a 40 hour week on a rota basis (including some weekends and bank holidays).
